The atmosphere in the bar suddenly turned ambiguous and enchanting.
Zhou Xuanyu could feel that Junxi in his arms was gradually struggling to breathe. She pushed against him with both hands, stumbling as she tried to retreat, but her legs simply couldn't support her.
"How about we go home?" Zhou Xuanyu asked softly, wrapping his arms around her and leaning close to her ear.
His warm breath felt like a soft feather.
"Then carry me," she said, her lips, a striking shade of red, curling into a playful smile as she looked at him like a mischievous child.
Her gaze was so pure that he couldn't tell if she was truly drunk or just pretending. He secretly hoped it was the latter.
Without a second thought, Zhou Xuanyu swept her off her feet.
The sudden sensation of being lifted off the ground hit Junxi's already dizzy head. One hand pressed against her temple while the other wrapped around Zhou Xuanyu's neck. Once she steadied herself, she teased, "Why are you so obedient?"
"Can you be a little more obedient too?" Zhou Xuanyu suggested.
"I won't!" Junxi pouted, turning her face away defiantly.
Zhou Xuanyu couldn't help but laugh at her stubbornness.
"You’re laughing at me..." she frowned and tugged at his ear. "See? You really are mocking me. You're not a good person either..."
Here we go again!
Zhou Xuanyu took a deep breath; it was her who was pushing him!
He leaned in closer again, swallowing down her slightly aggrieved words...
“Hmm! Hmm! Hmm!”
Junxi swung her legs, the pressure on her wrists growing stronger.
“Let me go. We can go home... we can do anything at home...” She exhaled softly, saying things she would never utter when sober.
Zhou Xuanyu was at a loss for words.
What could he do? They had already put on such a scandalous display under the bright sky and in front of so many people; could he possibly want more?
The bar staff were all staring at them, and Zhou Xuanyu's heart raced, but he maintained a calm facade as he hurriedly walked out.
He went straight to his car and shoved Junxi inside. The moment she touched the seat, the previously bold Junxi slumped down, unable to hold herself up.
Zhou Xuanyu struggled just to fasten her seatbelt. When he finally emerged from the passenger seat and straightened up, he glanced up to see a silver coupe darting across the street.
He recognized the car model, but it was too far away for him to see anything clearly.
“I want to go home! I want to go home!”
Junxi pounded on the car window in frustration.
Zhou Xuanyu snapped back to reality, quickly got into the car, and opened a small crack in the window. A cool breeze flowed in, causing her to rub her nose and quiet down.
Her sleeping face was truly endearing. Zhou Xuanyu couldn’t help but lean over and kiss her gently...
When Zhou Xuanyu dropped Junxi off at her doorstep, night had fallen. It was just the time when other residents were returning home from work. The narrow hallway felt unusually crowded.
Zhou Xuanyu carefully carried Junxi on his back, taking small, cautious steps.
"What happened to this girl? Who are you?"
"Wow, how did she end up like this?"
"Hey, you must be her boyfriend, right?"
Various questions and doubts flooded his ears.
Zhou Xuanyu smiled good-naturedly at them, maintaining his composure as he said, "She had a little quarrel and went out for a few drinks. She's fine."
Seeing his explanation, everyone felt a bit embarrassed and stopped asking further questions.
It had been a long time since Zhou Xuanyu had come here, but the room remained as tidy and clean as ever.
He placed Junxi onto the sofa. She flopped down onto the cushions like a boneless creature, mumbling "thirsty" under her breath.
The water jug was on the coffee table, but it was empty.
Zhou Xuanyu went to the kitchen to fill it with water and boil it. When he came back out, he found that Junxi had tumbled off the sofa along with the cushions. Perhaps she had bumped her head; she was gently holding her forehead and making soft whimpering sounds.
"Did you bump your head?" Zhou Xuanyu immediately set down the water jug and rushed over to help her, carefully rubbing the spot she was holding.
"It hurts," Junxi instantly clung to him like an octopus.
"Where does it hurt?"
"Everywhere." She patted her head and then her chest. "Here, here, here... it really all hurts."
Zhou Xuanyu looked at her, his temples throbbing.
The words seemed nonsensical, yet they also held a strange truth.
"Go to sleep. When you wake up, it won't hurt anymore."
He picked her up and carried her toward her room. Her room was still as empty as when she had just moved in, devoid of any belongings.
"How do you usually sleep?"
He scolded her lightly as he set her down.
Junxi rolled over and lay directly on the floor.
Zhou Xuanyu ignored her and opened the cabinet behind him. Inside were neatly stacked blankets. He reached in and pulled one out, still fragrant with her pleasant scent.
"Don't sleep just yet." Zhou Xuanyu gently nudged Junxi's waist with his foot.
She didn't move.
"Junxi." He squatted down, holding the blanket: "Let me spread this for you..."
"Shh!" Junxi made a "shh" gesture with her finger to her lips. "Just stop talking. If you sleep here for a bit, you'll know how I usually sleep."
With that, she reached out to grab him.
Zhou Xuanyu, balancing a large bundle of blankets in his hands, lost his stability when she touched him and fell to the ground.
There was only a tiny distance between them; as he lifted his gaze, he could see her long eyelashes fluttering like a flamboyant butterfly.
“Junxi…” He reached out to brush aside the hair from her forehead.
Junxi opened her eyes, her gaze clear and steady, as if she had just awakened from a drunken stupor.
“Stay tonight, okay?” She blinked, her voice carrying the characteristic huskiness of someone who had been drinking.
Zhou Xuanyu momentarily lost his focus as her arms lazily wrapped around him. When she finally embraced him, she suddenly tightened her grip.
“Don’t go, promise me you won’t go. I don’t want to be alone, at least not tonight… don’t go.”
“Okay.” Almost instinctively, Zhou Xuanyu replied.
He didn’t know what this “okay” meant to Junxi, but after he agreed, she tilted her head up to kiss him.
Unlike the kiss in the bar, this time Junxi seemed to carry a sense of determination as if she were willing to face anything. What she wanted seemed to be more than just a kiss.
“Junxi!”
Zhou Xuanyu felt warmth on his face; the taste of her kiss was salty as it slipped into his mouth.
“Don’t leave me,” she murmured, leaning closer into his embrace.
“I won’t leave you. Just sleep, okay?”
Zhou Xuanyu held her tightly in his arms, neither kissing her nor allowing her to kiss him. In that moment, he only wanted to be there for her, to provide her with a sense of security rather than take anything from her.
Junxi pressed firmly against him; he could feel her trembling. Even with him by her side, it seemed she still needed more warmth.
Zhou Xuanyu forcefully shook off one of the blankets and draped it over them, pulling their bodies closer together beneath its warmth.
Outside, the lingering smoke danced in the air; the city had just fallen into night, but for Junxi, it was already a long, dark evening.
Zhou Xuanyu was willing to hold her like this, quietly waiting for dawn.
Almost an entire night passed without sleep.
It was only when the first light of morning began to break that Zhou Xuanyu gently released Junxi.
Junxi was in a deep slumber; his small movements did not wake her. She merely turned over in the blankets, clutching the covers tighter and continuing to sleep.
Zhou Xuanyu pressed his fingers against his temples and sat quietly on the floor, watching her for a while.
In the middle of the night yesterday, she had repeatedly murmured “Daddy” and “Mommy,” occasionally mentioning his name as well.
Over the years, she had hidden away so much pain and endured countless nights like this—long and lonely without anyone by her side…
Zhou Xuanyu stood up and walked out of her room.
His coat was still thrown over the sofa, where he found a cigarette. He took one out and lit it for himself.
The sky was about to brighten completely; he had to leave.
If she woke up and realized how vulnerable she had been clinging to him all night, her pride would likely torment her for several days.
Moreover, last night… last night had been a night of losing control for both of them.
She could be said to be intoxicated by alcohol, but he was completely sober. He felt acutely aware of his body responding to her. To him, Junxi had completely transformed into a woman.
Zhou Xuanyu grabbed his coat and headed downstairs. The car was parked outside the alley as he walked, smoking a cigarette.
His phone showed several missed calls, all from his driver, Xiao Cao.
Xiao Cao had always been on standby and had never contacted him proactively. Zhou Xuanyu found it strange; he thought about calling back but decided against it.
At this hour, normal people were still resting.
Zhou Xuanyu drove back to Yatian. The road was mostly empty, and he began to feel drowsy. When the car finally came to a stop in front of his house, he noticed someone sitting on the porch of the villa.
“Mr. Zhou, you’re finally back!” Xiao Cao suddenly appeared out of nowhere and opened the car door for him.
“What’s going on?”
Zhou Xuanyu glanced at Xiao Cao and then at the person sitting at his doorstep.
It was Zhou Ziyan.
“Young Master Zhou has been sitting there all night, insisting on waiting for you to return. I didn’t have the key to get inside and couldn’t persuade him to leave, so I could only keep him company all night. Thankfully, you’re back now…”
