I had only been here for a day, and after forcing myself to sleep for a few hours to regain some energy, I groggily woke up to see An Yijun, who had also fallen asleep with me, already up and playing with Little White. She looked vibrant and full of life, while I still felt somewhat exhausted.
Seeing the sparkle in her eyes, I knew she wanted to go out.
As I took her hand and stepped outside, I spotted Murong Danyin and Murong Han, who had come looking for Lian.
I paused for a moment upon seeing her.
At first, she hadn’t noticed me, but when she caught my gaze, she seemed momentarily taken aback, as if puzzled.
I lowered my head, forcing a smile as I pulled An Yijun along and walked away.
“Wait,” she called out to me.
I stopped in my tracks, feeling a bit stiff.
She looked at me with confusion. “Have we met before?” Her tone was uncertain.
I didn’t turn around; I simply replied lightly, “How could someone like me have met the princess?”
“But…” She seemed about to say something more, but Murong Han, already impatient beside her, frowned and said, “Let’s go, Elder Sister.”
She hesitated for a moment but ultimately walked away.
“Why didn’t you acknowledge her? You clearly remember her,” Little White’s voice intruded into my thoughts.
“Aren’t you supposed to be able to read minds? If so, why ask me? You should know what I’m thinking,” I replied coolly.
“Alas,” he sighed softly. “In this world, you are the only one whose thoughts I cannot penetrate. You are not truly from this realm; I cannot discern your mind.”
“You know?” I was somewhat surprised.
"I have cultivated as a divine beast on Kunlun Mountain for a hundred years. I naturally know. I also know that woman's fate; she will surely enjoy wealth and honor, living a long life," he said disdainfully.
"What about my future, my fate? Can you see that?"
"The only thing I cannot see in this world is you," he sighed.
I forced a bitter smile, "Then that means my prospects are bleak, and my future is dark." In truth, I didn't even know what my future held.
"Your fate has always been in your own hands. As long as you want to do something, you can achieve it."
I glanced at Sister Dan Yi's back and said with a complex gaze, "She should have her own life, not live forever in An Jin's shadow. Besides, she is already married with children; I don't want to disrupt their lives."
"Yes, that's your choice. But An Jin, why do you only think of others and never consider yourself? What does it matter if you arrange everyone's future? What about your own? An Jin, you should learn to live for yourself," Xiao Bai gently sighed.
My steps came to a halt. Live for myself?
"Mom, what's wrong?" An Yijun asked, puzzled by my sudden stop since she was unaware of my conversation with Xiao Bai.
"Oh, I'm fine," I forced a smile and then snapped back to reality, pulling An Yijun along to continue walking.
"Mom, look! There are candied hawthorns! The kind you mentioned!" An Yijun exclaimed joyfully upon seeing something I had talked about before.
"And mud dolls... kites..."
After all, she was just a child; seeing interesting things always made her happy.
"Mom, these are just like the ones in your drawings!" An Yijun said excitedly.
"Be careful," I followed closely behind her, watching over her anxiously.
At that moment, suddenly a boy in a gray robe brushed past An Yijun, causing her to fall to the ground.
Seeing the Gray Robed Man deliberately bump into An Yijun, I immediately sensed something was wrong. Without hesitation, I executed a swift maneuver and captured him. Then, I quickly pressed on his acupoint, rendering him immobile.
Ignoring him, I rushed to An Yijun to check if she was alright. She had already gotten up by herself and smiled at me when she saw my concern.
In her youthful voice, she said, "Mom, don't worry, I'm fine."
Seeing that she was unharmed filled me with an overwhelming urge to cry; thankfully, she was okay.
I picked her up and turned coldly to look at the gray-robed boy. Before I could do anything, several men in black appeared silently and took the gray-robed boy away.
A chill and murderous intent flashed in my eyes. Anyone who dared to harm An Yijun would not be spared; no one would escape my wrath.
Even if I had to become a demon or another Satan, I would not let it go. Even if it meant destroying this world, I would ensure that An Yijun suffered no harm. She was my only blood relative in this world—the only one who could carry on everything for me, the continuation of my life. I would not allow anyone to hurt her! Absolutely not!
No matter the cost, I would spare no effort!
But when I turned back to An Yijun, my face was already filled with smiles. "An Yijun, let's go somewhere else to play."
A glimmer of coldness flashed in her eyes before she smiled and replied, "Sure, let's go."
I stroked her long black hair and kissed her cheek. I knew she understood; being born in Jun Jin as my daughter, she knew what could happen.
I stood up with her in my arms and then noticed many onlookers surrounding us.
A man in a Deep Robe adorned with Gold Thread stood there, exuding an innate aura of nobility. His features were strikingly handsome, and those around him seemed captivated by his presence. He looked vaguely familiar, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't recall where I had seen him before or who he was.
He looked at me with a hint of surprise and confusion in his gaze. Behind him stood a man in gray, standing respectfully.
I cast a faint glance at him before carrying An Yijun away.
Years passed since we last parted. Who is who’s someone? Who remembers whom? Who forgets whom? Who is reborn? This missed encounter, this brush of shoulders… yesterday is no longer today.
I cannot see the aging memories, like the Twilight Hawk that brightens the horizon.
A faint fragrance lingered as I brushed past that person. Suddenly, my heart tightened with an inexplicable pain. Yet, reflexively, I turned to look back, and he did the same. Our eyes met; though he seemed familiar, I did not know him.
I calmly averted my gaze and offered a light smile.
Then I turned and walked away.
The drifting petals filled my sleeves, my garments fluttered in the wind, and my long silk dress flowed gracefully as I departed.
After holding An Yijun for a while, I was preparing to take her to the local brothel, wanting her to experience the feeling I had when I first visited one. I remembered I hadn’t gone alone, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t recall who that person was.
Suddenly, An Yijun leaned on my shoulder, her voice weak as she murmured, “Mom, I feel so unwell.” Her hand felt cold and limply rested on me.
I paused in my steps, a chill running through me as an ominous premonition rose from my feet.
“An Yijun, don’t worry; everything will be fine. Mom will take you home.”
