Xin'er was captivated by the man's handsome features, and when he smiled, her heart raced uncontrollably. It felt as if a little deer had jumped into her chest, bounding endlessly. Surprised by her own feelings, she took a moment to compose herself before looking into his dark eyes, licking her lips nervously, and saying, "Thank you for saving me earlier." This time, her voice was steady, though it still carried a sweet, melodious quality that was utterly charming.
Leng Yixuan merely chuckled in response. "Is that all? You just say thank you after I saved you?"
"Uh?" Xin'er was taken aback. After all, it was commonly said that great kindness should not go unthanked. Why did this man seem to expect more? But what could she offer? She had no money! The thought made her anxious, and her delicate white hands fidgeted nervously. Her pink lips were slightly parted as if she wanted to say something but hesitated, giving her an alluring air without her even realizing it.
She was clearly unaware of how beautiful and enticing she appeared. In her nervousness, her lovely eyes trembled slightly, and her long lashes fluttered like two beautiful black butterflies eager to take flight. She looked youthful yet exuded an undeniable charm.
Seeing this, Leng Yixuan felt a stir in his heart, a flicker of astonishment crossing his gaze. However, looking at the girl's helpless expression—like a blank canvas where every emotion was laid bare—brought him joy.
Unaware of Leng Yixuan's thoughts, Xin'er stammered after a moment of hesitation, "What... what do you want me to do to repay you? Just so you know, I don't have a single coin on me right now." Her face flushed with embarrassment as she lowered her head.
Leng Yixuan smiled wider, his low laughter ringing out like music. "Do I look like someone who needs money?"
Xin'er blinked in surprise and looked him up and down with her timid yet curious eyes. The man before her stood tall and elegant in his purple robe that accentuated his noble demeanor. Although she was poor herself, she could tell that his attire was worth a fortune. The amethyst pendant at his waist only confirmed this; even though she didn't know much about gemstones, she had heard that amethyst was incredibly valuable in the Celestial Yuan Dynasty.
After carefully assessing his clothing once more, Xin'er shook her head slowly. If someone like him were lacking money, then surely no one in the world had any! But if he wasn't short on funds, how could she repay him?
Lost in thought, her beautifully shaped dark eyebrows knitted together slightly as she pondered this dilemma. Leng Yixuan found himself delighted by her sincerity; unlike the many women he had encountered who feigned affection while hiding their true feelings behind false smiles and malicious intentions, Xin'er was refreshingly genuine.
Though he was eighteen and many boys from wealthy families were already surrounded by wives and concubines at his age, he had never been involved with any woman. He understood desire well enough; after all, he was a normal young man at the peak of his youth. Yet whenever faced with those heavily made-up women who acted coyly, he would rather take care of himself than engage with them.
His cousins thought him strange for this attitude; however, he didn't care what others thought. Fortunately for him, he had open-minded parents who did not pressure him into marriage like many others did at eighteen. They were pleased that he wasn't frivolously pursuing relationships and believed love to be the most sacred thing in the world—something they would never force upon him.
He felt grateful for their understanding and continued searching for the right woman for himself. Now, gazing at the unexpected girl before him, he wondered if fate had brought them together.
Just as these thoughts crossed his mind, an odd sound interrupted—a gurgling noise emanating from Xin'er's stomach. Leng Yixuan paused for a moment before realization dawned on him.
Meanwhile, Xin'er felt her mind go blank for an instant as heat rushed to her cheeks and ears in embarrassment. How humiliating! She had just made a fool of herself in front of a stranger! The more she thought about it, the more flustered she became; even without looking in a mirror, she knew her face must be as red as a ripe tomato.
Leng Yixuan found her flustered demeanor endearing. How could there be such a cute girl in the world? She was both adorable and pitiable at once. He couldn't help but chuckle softly.
Noticing how shy she seemed made him smile wider; he decided to play along with it. "You know," he said casually while rubbing his chin as if deep in thought, "I haven't had dinner yet today. Since you're thanking me for saving you, why don't you join me for dinner?"
"Ah?" Xin'er blinked in confusion at the unexpected invitation. Before she could respond further, Leng Yixuan had already turned and started walking downstairs.
Realizing what had just happened, Xin'er quickly lifted her skirt and hurried after him. As she glanced back at him from time to time while running to catch up with his long strides, Leng Yixuan couldn't help but smirk at how cute she looked trying to keep up.
Once they reached the second floor of Drunken Indulgence—a place Xin'er recognized from earlier—she felt a wave of anxiety wash over her again. After all, this was where she'd fled from earlier! She wondered if her father had left yet or if Boss Cui was still around... The thought of that old man leering at her made her freeze in place out of fear.
Noticing that Xin'er had stopped moving behind him after several steps forward, Leng Yixuan turned around to see her standing there like a frightened little rabbit caught near a wolf's den—her delicate face betraying clear signs of fear.
A surge of protectiveness welled up within him for this petite girl who seemed so vulnerable.
