Chapter Seven: Shark Hunt
In the vast ocean, sunlight streamed down, illuminating the waters before me. As the depth increased, the brightness gradually diminished.
Near the seabed, the light was dim, and the visible area shrank significantly; just a few meters away lay a profound darkness.
This was still a coastal region, not yet reaching the edge of the open sea, but the size and length of the fish had greatly increased.
Many solitary fish measured over a meter in length, equipped with sharp teeth and massive bodies.
Meanwhile, some schooling fish swam in groups of fifty to sixty, even reaching one or two hundred individuals.
Most of them were armed with razor-sharp teeth; even a three or four-meter-long fish would be reduced to nothing more than a pile of skeletons when surrounded by them.
Suddenly, the surrounding fish scattered in all directions, some swimming away in panic.
In a flash, a figure darted in, seizing a massive Pomfret about a meter long. With just one bite, half of its body vanished without a trace.
It tore into the Pomfret, devouring its flesh voraciously.
This was a Giant Mako Shark, commonly known as the Tiger Shark, measuring over three meters in length with a streamlined and robust body.
As it gnawed on the Pomfret, its open jaws revealed layers of terrifying teeth glistening ominously.
In just a moment, it had devoured most of the Pomfret's body, leaving behind its massive head and broken bones.
This Pomfret weighed around twenty-two pounds, with the portion consumed being about fourteen or fifteen pounds.
For a gigantic Tiger Shark, measuring nearly three and a half meters long and weighing close to eight hundred pounds, this fish was hardly sufficient.
It slowly rose to the surface, intending to continue its hunt.
At that moment, however, the Pomfret's head began to drop.
With a soft thud, the head landed on a large, pitch-black stone, making a slight sound before rolling off and coming to rest on the sandy ground nearby.
But in that instant, the black stone moved, transforming into a shadow that surged upward.
Boom.
The enormous form broke through the water, lunging toward the shark.
"Hmm?"
Sensing the disturbance in the water, the shark immediately noticed its opponent. Seeing that it was larger than itself, it felt no fear; instead, it charged forward.
It arced through the water, avoiding the Black Fish's head and maneuvering toward its side, aiming for a lower position.
As the Black Fish adjusted its position in response to the Tiger Shark's movements, it turned slowly. This delay allowed the Tiger Shark to close in to within five meters of its side.
Whoosh.
In the next moment, the Tiger Shark transformed into a sharp blade, darting towards the Black Fish, aiming for its abdomen.
What if it was large?
The Tiger Shark showed no fear; it had captured much larger fish before. As long as it targeted a vital spot, it could easily kill its opponent.
The Tiger Shark rushed closer, swiftly approaching the abdomen of the Black Fish, opening its massive jaws to bite down.
But at that instant, the enormous body of the Black Fish suddenly twisted. Its powerful form swayed, and its massive tail lashed out.
Bang.
Before the Tiger Shark could react, the tail struck its upper jaw with tremendous force, causing it to momentarily falter.
In that brief pause, the Black Fish once again shifted its body, propelling itself through the water and charging towards the side of the shark.
This speed was nothing like its earlier sluggishness.
Just as the Tiger Shark regained its balance, the Black Fish was already at its side, opening its jaws wide and biting into its body.
Crunch.
The enormous mouth closed around the side of the Tiger Shark's body.
As the Tiger Shark was bitten, its body instinctively twisted. However, combined with the closing of the Black Fish's jaws and its own movement, a large chunk of flesh was torn from the side of the Tiger Shark.
Bang.
A large chunk of the Fish Body instantly vanished, the bitten area seeming to explode as a mist of blood burst forth into the sea, with small pieces of flesh drifting away into the distance.
As the blood mist rose, the Tiger Shark flipped over and lost its life.
Gulp.
The Black Fish swallowed the piece of fish meat it had bitten off, opening its wide mouth for a lunge, biting again and tearing off another chunk of fish flesh to consume.
The corpse of the Tiger Shark slowly sank toward the ocean floor, with the Black Fish closely following, intending to feast.
But in the next moment, the Black Fish suddenly jolted awake, its body twisting backward as it swam away into the distance.
Splash.
After moving four or five meters away, a swarm of deep blue fish surged in, numbering two to three hundred, instantly covering the shark's body.
Crunch crunch.
The sound of gnawing echoed as the Tiger Shark's corpse visibly disappeared.
These fish were entirely purple, mostly measuring between twenty to thirty centimeters in length, but they possessed sharp teeth and enormous mouths.
The Purple Fish surrounded the Tiger Shark's corpse to feed, but a small group of them—about seven or eight—chased after the Black Fish.
These Purple Fish closed in on the Black Fish, surrounding it and beginning to gnaw at its body.
Sizzle.
However, their teeth could not penetrate the scales of the Black Fish.
Several of the fish attacked the Black Fish's abdomen, the joint of its tail, and its eyes with their whiskers.
Snap.
The abdomen of the Black Fish remained covered in thick scales, blocking the bites from these fish.
When the Black Fish was attacked near its eye, its eyelid lowered to shield against their assault.
The Purple Fish attacking its whiskers were met with a gaping maw.
Crunch, crunch.
One by one, the Purple Fish were bitten and swallowed whole, disappearing before their eyes.
With a single bite, the Black Fish consumed five or six Purple Fish, and in an instant, more than twenty Purple Fish vanished without a trace.
Splash.
In the distance, other Purple Fish surrounding the Tiger Shark had completely devoured its body and were now rushing toward the Black Fish, resembling a purple whirlpool.
Not worth the trouble, time to go.
Sensing their approach, the Black Fish no longer lingered and swam away into the distance, transforming into a shadow that vanished without a trace.
The Purple Fish continued to pursue, but after advancing a hundred meters, they were left far behind.
Huff.
The Black Fish swam into the distance, where the sea gradually brightened. It then entered a trench, sinking its body into the depths to hide within.
These Purple Fish are truly dangerous, the Black Fish thought. It was the evolved form of Xiaqiu.
At this moment, Xiaqiu had grown to nearly four meters in length and weighed over twelve hundred pounds.
Its head was massive, with a high and hard forehead.
The upper and lower jaws protruded, with a wide gash for a mouth that housed six layers of teeth. The front teeth were sharp, while the back teeth were flat.
Six whiskers extended from either side of its mouth, the longest nearly seventy centimeters, making them feel more sensitive and capable of slight control.
Its eyes had developed eyelids that could close, and they were tough enough to withstand some fish bites.
Xiaqiu's body had become more robust; it was no longer flattened or oval but rather spindle-shaped, with black scales covering its underside as well.
The scales had undergone two more transformations. As it entered deeper waters where light dimmed, the scales changed from silver-white to dark gray and eventually turned completely black.
The fish scales remained comb scales but were now much larger, each one about the size of an adult's palm and incredibly hard.
Xiaqiu's dorsal fin had also become more powerful, with prominent spines that provided significant attack strength.
The pectoral fins were shaped like scythes, while the tail fin resembled a broom, perfectly complementing the spindle-shaped body and providing immense power.
Now, Xiaqiu was strong enough that as long as a fish's size didn’t overwhelm it, there was no need to fear.
Even a shark nearly five meters long could be killed by Xiaqiu.
However, the only thing that troubled Xiaqiu was the sheer number of larger fish schools.
If the school consisted of fewer than a hundred fish, there was no need for concern; even if it sustained some injuries, recovery would be quick.
But when faced with schools of two or three hundred fish, fleeing became necessary.
Just like the Purple Fish encountered earlier, unique to the One Piece world and highly aggressive. Sixty or seventy could still be managed, but two or three hundred would force a retreat.
In these waters, despite many dangers, as long as Xiaqiu remained cautious, it wouldn’t encounter life-threatening situations.
Yet, Xiaqiu felt a tinge of monotony.
Having been in this world for a month and a half, it had grown from thirty centimeters to four meters.
The rate of growth was astonishing, even surpassing other sea creatures it had seen.
Xiaqiu had begun to overlook its evolutionary progress and had adapted to its identity as a fish.
However, the most frequent activity it engaged in was moving from shallower areas to deeper waters to hunt, then returning to digest and rest, repeating this cycle endlessly.
It was simply too monotonous.
Life like this held no glimmer of hope, leaving one unable to muster even a shred of interest in continuing.
Xiaqiu longed to communicate with others, to glimpse the world and witness more splendid scenery.
Within Xiaqiu's heart, a desire for adventure slowly began to take shape, yet the fear of danger extinguished those thoughts.
Not strong enough yet.
Xiaqiu moved her body slightly, submerging her Fish Body into the trench, lowering her eyelids as she began to rest.
