The figure before her had only slightly changed, yet they had met in a very peculiar way. Xu Nuan found it hard to forget Wang Yiyun.
But could this person before her still be called human?
He still bore the frail appearance from her hazy memories, the Tactical Jacket clinging pitifully to his skeletal frame. The Mechanical Parrot, which they had once tricked so easily, perched on his shoulder. However, there were undeniable differences that could not be ignored: the pale skin tinged with green, the vacant, lifeless eyes, and the aura of death that surrounded him.
Wang Yiyun was dead; it was a memory that Xu Nuan and Gu Ze had buried with their own hands. Such memories would not deceive her.
"Wang Yiyun."
Xu Nuan stated firmly again, unaware of when the cup in her hand had been taken away.
Wang Yiyun's current state resembled those controlled Zombies, yet he possessed a semblance of humanity that those Zombies lacked.
What stood before her was not a living being.
Xu Nuan felt an overwhelming chill, and the cold wind that swept through made her skin crawl.
When a piece of clothing draped over her shoulders, warmth enveloped her. Her throat felt a bit dry as Wang Yiyun stared at her with his soulless eyes, silent and unthreatening. This gaze was even more unsettling.
Could there be others in the same state as Wang Yiyun?
Many had perished in the game!
Xu Nuan's expression darkened immediately.
Xu Nuan and Gu Ze stood side by side, facing Wang Yiyun. Finally, Wang Yiyun moved, walking toward them, and the two instinctively stepped back. Neither wanted to act rashly before understanding the truth of the situation. Investigating such an unknown presence required time and patience.
The light was dim, and the spot chosen by Gu Ze and Xu Nuan was surrounded by bushes, keeping them somewhat distant from the others, most of whom were out of sight.
Noticing that there was no movement from that direction, Xu Nuan felt a bit more at ease.
"Let's control it first, then we can investigate further."
The dead had returned in another form, stirring up a storm within Xu Nuan. Initially shocked, she intended to observe quietly. However, when she realized that Wang Yiyun was merely approaching without any intention to attack, Xu Nuan's thoughts shifted to taking the initiative.
Gu Ze shared this sentiment. He lightly acknowledged her words and prepared to charge forward but halted when a voice came from behind him.
"There’s a chip in his body. As long as we remove it, he won’t be able to move anymore."
It was Liu Minghong, who had leisurely turned around. Liu Minghong had previously tampered with explosives placed in different people's bodies. Among those individuals were several victims who had not yet entered the game, ultimately becoming mere game props. Some were designers who had died due to hints from Another Founder.
In other words, Liu Minghong actually had control over all the previous zombies, much like those in the Game Control Room. He simply believed he had no obligation to rescue others and would only reclaim such control when he felt inclined to do so.
Liu Minghong briefly explained this matter to the two of them, and Xu Nuan immediately grasped its significance.
"So you mean that the chip in Wang Yiyun's body was placed later?"
If Wang Yiyun and the others had been implanted with chips beforehand, then given Liu Minghong's nature, he would have directly informed them of this through action rather than words when he approached just now.
Actions often spoke louder than words.
Liu Minghong nodded, a flicker of unusual emotion passing through his eyes, while Gu Ze quickly took over the conversation.
"Then it must have been that person," Gu Ze said, his eyes cold like distant stars—brilliant yet shimmering with deadly light. "Wang Yiyun's corpse will definitely not be the only one to become a Zombie."
Xu Nuan's heart sank again. She was lost in her own thoughts, ultimately unable to escape this conclusion.
Suddenly, Wang Yiyun stopped in its tracks, stiffly twisting its neck before hurriedly running toward the bushes.
It was already a lifeless entity, not sensing the malice from Xu Nuan and the others.
"Someone is calling it."
A spark of excitement flashed in Liu Minghong's eyes. He immediately followed Wang Yiyun, but after a few steps, he stopped and turned back to look at the unmoving Gu Ze and Xu Nuan.
"This could very well be a trap."
Gu Ze noticed Liu Minghong's silent confusion and explained calmly.
"We currently have the advantage in numbers. Following it blindly would put us at a disadvantage. Moreover, this is not the best time to confront him; our plan is not yet fully executed."
Gu Ze's expression remained largely unchanged as he spoke. He sensed Liu Minghong's hatred towards Another Founder from this behavior, a hatred that could rival Xu Nuan's own.
Xu Nuan said nothing, meeting Liu Minghong's gaze with calm acceptance, tacitly agreeing.
Liu Minghong reluctantly added a comment.
"That doesn't mean we can let it go back; that would indirectly help that person gain power, which will definitely be detrimental to us in the future."
Compared to Xu Nuan and Gu Ze, Liu Minghong and Wang Yiyun were more familiar with each other, but at this moment, he saw no distinction between acquaintances—only collaborators and enemies.
The chill on Xu Nuan's back had not yet faded when a new wave of coldness enveloped her. She seemed to foresee a day when either she or Gu Ze would lose their significance as partners to him and would be ruthlessly eliminated.
After all the twists and turns, the only person she could truly trust was still Gu Ze. This realization deepened Xu Nuan's hatred for the game, further solidifying her support for Gu Ze.
"I don't mind."
Gu Ze shrugged and pointed toward Wang Yiyun, who was trying to hide in the bushes.
"As long as you can find out where the chip in its body is."
For a Zombie, as long as the chip wasn't destroyed, it would never die.
Seeing Liu Minghong's bewildered expression, Xu Nuan sighed. To her, Wang Yiyun's failure to attack them just now was a trap; it could also mean that the newly implanted chip didn't have the same effect as before, so they didn't need to worry for now.
As for the potential of gaining another enemy in the future, Xu Nuan didn't believe that Wang Yiyun would pose much of a threat after becoming a Zombie. After all, Wang Yiyun's strength lay in his biological abilities, not in the brute force of a Zombie.
Liu Minghong's eyes flashed with anger, and his breathing became rapid. Seeing this, Xu Nuan wanted to say something to ease the tension. They shouldn't let their differing ideologies lead to internal conflict before they even had a chance to cooperate properly.
What interrupted Xu Nuan was a scream coming from another direction.
"Ah!"
The scream was unexpectedly long, but it wasn't the familiar sharp sound.
It wasn't Deng Yinyin; it was He Min.
Xu Nuan suddenly glanced at Gu Ze, and a bad premonition arose in her heart.
As the two hurried towards He Min, Liu Minghong stood there in frustration, his gaze shifting uncertainly between the departing figures of Wang Yiyun and Xu Nuan.
He realized that as long as Wang Yiyun did not attack, Xu Nuan and Gu Ze had no intention of making a move. Or perhaps these two were navigating this game with the mindset of "I won't harm others if they don't harm me; if they do harm me, I will retaliate."
This was a game philosophy he did not agree with; it was too soft-hearted.
His eyes darkened, and he ultimately followed after Xu Nuan and Gu Ze, unaware that Wang Yiyun had stopped moving after running a distance. Her figure was so frail, swaying in the cold wind, her pale face devoid of any expression, her eyes lacking any spark; she was like a lifeless object, certainly devoid of independent thought.
When Xu Nuan and Gu Ze arrived in haste, they were met with the sight of two Zombies attacking He Min. A few people nearby wanted to help but were evaded by the two Zombies.
Xu Nuan and Gu Ze recognized these two Zombies; one was Guo Dafu, whom Xu Nuan believed had been bitten to death by a Snow Leopard, and the other was Sun Ming, who had turned into a Zombie just before dying.
These two were similar to Wang Yiyun in appearance; they were dressed as they had been before, but their skin had turned pale, their eyes murky, without any sign of decay.
These two seemingly unrelated Zombies were now surrounding He Min. She moved up and down swiftly, wielding a short knife that created a protective circle around her through rapid movements, preventing the two Zombies from harming her for the time being.
That earlier scream must have been due to the terrifying appearance of the two Zombies catching He Min off guard.
Xu Hang, Chi Xiaoming, and Deng Yinyin watched this scene from the side. The first two initially intended to step in and help, but upon seeing that the two Zombies were solely focused on attacking He Min without showing any weaknesses—and that He Min could currently control the situation—they decided to abandon their plan.
Xu Nuan observed carefully and realized that intervening would only hinder He Min, who was in control of the situation. So, she stepped aside, focusing intently on finding the weaknesses of the two Zombies, hoping to locate the chip and eliminate them both in one fell swoop.
Her attitude towards Wang Yiyun was different. Wang Yiyun had once designed a scheme that led them to misunderstand Xie Huai, but ultimately, it was because of them that this person had died. In contrast, Guo Dafu and Sun Ming had approached them with malice from the very beginning. Now that they were attacking again, the group felt their pent-up resentment finally had an outlet.
As she observed, the discussions among those nearby reached her ears.
"She's truly impressive; she can find opportunities even in this situation."
"She's hiding her true abilities; what she's showing now must be her real level."
Xu Nuan knew they were referring to her. She found their tone somewhat strange, but with a thought, she shifted her focus to observing He Min's skills.
He Min's movements were now even more decisive and fierce, showcasing a lethal prowess that surpassed her previous performance. The level she displayed was not on par with what Xu Nuan had seen before. As Xu Nuan's mentor in combat skills, He Min's abilities were actually comparable to hers; yet now, He Min's display far exceeded Xu Nuan's own.
Had she made significant breakthroughs in these past few months? Or had she been concealing her true strength all along?
