We fell silent in an instant. When the man saw that we were all quiet, he cursed under his breath and turned back to sleep.
Five minutes later, I nudged Mai Lao and said, "Mai Lao, what do you think we should do now?" I was eager to see what this Old Man would come up with; I had a feeling he was not an ordinary person.
Mai Lao calmly whispered, "Since we are here, we might as well settle down. It's definitely not a good time to act now; that Bearded Man isn't a fool. Let's wait for tomorrow when we go out to sea and look for an opportunity then. Everyone should be ready to adapt."
As soon as he finished speaking, Landmine walked out of the cabin. That guy was surprisingly energetic; good thing I hadn't acted yet, or it would have been a real mess. He woke up everyone who had been sleeping, urging them to be more alert. Then he checked the ropes binding us.
Mai Lao and the others pretended to be asleep. After Landmine made his rounds, he returned to the cabin.
Once Landmine left, Mai Lao sighed and said, "It's good that we didn't let our guard down. Let's wait until tomorrow to find another chance."
"Looks like that's all we can do. Everyone should get some rest; we'll talk more when we go out to sea tomorrow." I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, dreaming one strange thing after another. I couldn't quite describe them—there were men in black, a female corpse in a coffin, and other unsettling images that filled me with fear.
"Brother Yi! Brother Yi! Wake up! Wake up!" I was jolted awake by the persistent calls. As I opened my eyes, the sunlight was blinding, making it hard for me to adjust. Looking at the position of the sun, it must be afternoon already. I couldn't believe I had slept until then, especially while sitting up.
"You really can sleep! It's already afternoon," Shunzi said beside me.
Still feeling a bit groggy, I looked around. The Bearded Man's crew was still on deck, guns trained on us, while Jiao Ba and Mai Lao were also awake.
"You guys woke up pretty early! Where's the Bearded Man?" I asked.
"He's still in the cabin. It's been all morning, and he hasn't shown his face yet. Who knows what that bastard is planning," Mai Lao replied with a grim expression.
I tried to move the ropes binding me, but it was no use; they were tied too tightly. Unless I had a blade in hand, it would be a futile effort.
Suddenly, an idea struck me. "Mai Lao, how about we lure the Bearded Man and his crew to the Coffin Corpse?"
"You mean... use the corpse to deal with them? Will that even work? It's just a body; what power can it have?" Mai Lao replied calmly, not as complicated as I had imagined.
"It has plenty of power! You just don't know it yet. Brother Yi, I think it's a good plan. If those fools go there and we break that talisman, they're as good as dead," Shunzi said with a sinister grin, speaking softly.
At that moment, the Bearded Man and Landmine stepped out of the cabin one after the other. The Bearded Man crouched down in front of us with a smug smile and said, "How's it going, everyone? Did you sleep well?"
"Thanks to you, we all slept quite comfortably," I replied, looking at him. Indeed, I had slept well, though my back and waist felt uncomfortable from sitting too long.
The Bearded Man laughed heartily. "As long as you slept well! Now let’s cut to the chase. Today, you’re going to help me find the Wreck. If you find it, everything will be easy; if not, think about the consequences." He said the last part with a stern face, looking as if he had eaten something foul.
Mai Lao calmly responded, "The Wreck isn't easy to find. Even with a Nautical Chart, it's not enough. You saw for yourself; it took us over half a month to find this shipwreck. You expect us to find the Wreck in just one day? That's just daydreaming."
The Bearded Man scoffed and nodded. "Well, Old Man, you're right about that. But that's your problem. As for me, you need to hurry up. I'll give you three days at most. Remember not to play tricks on me; those two girls are in my hands. If you dare mess around, I can't guarantee their safety."
It was a blatant threat! This bastard—I should have taken a gamble and killed him back then. Even if it meant sacrificing a few sailors, I would have accepted it. But now we had little chance to fight back; we had to find a way to lure them to the Coffin Corpse and ensure they would meet their end without a burial.
"Alright, I promise you I'll find the Wreck within three days." Before Mai Lao could respond, I jumped in with my agreement. I glanced at Mai Lao and gave him a slight nod; he sighed in resignation.
The Bearded Man looked pleased. "Good! I like your character."
"What about Jenny? Let me see her so I can feel at ease diving into the sea for the Wreck," I said with a grin while cursing his ancestors in my heart.
The Bearded Man shot a glance at Landmine, who immediately turned and headed toward the cabin. Before long, Jenny and Li Xin were brought out with their arms held tightly behind their backs.
"Are you two okay?" I called out to them.
Jenny shook her head and replied, "We're fine, don't worry about us."
I nodded in response, but the Bearded Man made another gesture, and Landmine escorted them back into the cabin. That Bearded Man was truly a piece of work; it was clear he was using Jenny and Li Xin to threaten us. This meant we had no choice but to help him find the Wreck. However, before searching for the Wreck, I needed to pique his interest in that coffin.
"You see the people now; you should feel reassured, right?" The Bearded Man said with a smile.
I calmly replied, "I can feel reassured, but..."
"But what?" The Bearded Man asked, staring at me intently.
I smiled and said, "You're here for the Wreck because of money, right? Do you know that there’s an invaluable treasure on that Wreck we salvaged?"
As soon as I finished speaking, the Bearded Man's interest was piqued. "What? An invaluable treasure? Are you joking? I thought you had already taken everything from that Wreck!"
"That was just part of it; the most crucial items are still on that Wreck. If you don’t believe me, you can send someone to check," I said casually, careful not to appear too eager.
The Bearded Man squinted at me. "Kid, you're not trying to fool me, are you? If you're lying to me, I'll put a bullet in you."
I immediately put on a very sincere expression and said, "Don't worry; I don't want to die just yet. If you don't believe me, you can ask them."
"He's speaking the truth; there is indeed a treasure in that Wreck, but it all depends on whether you dare to take it," Mai Lao said cooperatively.
"What do you mean, Old Man?" Bearded Man asked suspiciously.
"Mai Lao is reminding you that there is a coffin in that Wreck, and it must contain something valuable. However... none of us would dare to open it. If you have the guts, then go ahead and try," Jiao Ba chimed in with a timely addition.
"And that coffin is said to belong to the Empress Dowager, so you can be sure it holds something precious," I casually added, though I had no idea who the corpse inside the coffin actually was.
"Kid, how do you know that coffin definitely belongs to the Empress Dowager? Are you trying to fool me?" Bearded Man's vigilance was surprisingly high; he wasn't as foolish as I had thought.
Jiao Ba suddenly declared, "Just because I'm the best tomb raider in the country should be enough." He said this with pride, his expression matching his words.
Bearded Man pondered with shifty eyes before calling Landmine over. The two of them whispered something to each other. It seemed they were discussing matters.
Jiao Ba and I exchanged glances; it looked promising! However, half a minute later, my expectations were dashed. Bearded Man was indeed quite cunning. I had initially thought he would ask me to lead him to the Wreck to find the coffin, but instead, he said, "Let's not rush into the coffin matter; first, help me find another Wreck."
This guy really knew how to keep his cool! I could only respond nonchalantly, "Whatever; whether you take it or not is up to you."
