When Jiao Ba shouted those words, I was momentarily stunned, staring at him in confusion. But in an instant, I heard a painful scream coming from beside the coffin. I quickly shone my Flashlight over there and saw the rotting female corpse sitting up inside the coffin.
She had sunk her teeth into the neck of the Marauder, blood beginning to flow down his body. He trembled uncontrollably, and I noticed that the corpse's eyes had turned blood red. A beast-like growl escaped her lips, and most terrifying of all, her blood-red gaze was fixed directly on me.
At that moment, I was jolted into a state of panic. Was it because I had taken her jade pendant? I involuntarily stepped back a few paces, cold sweat instantly soaking my body, and I dropped the Flashlight from my hand.
The Marauder, who had just moments ago been a robust figure, had now become nothing but skin and bones in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, the rotting female corpse was gradually regaining her former appearance. I was dumbfounded by the sight before me; it was beyond my comprehension that she could actually repair her decaying body.
A chill coursed through me, every pore on my skin standing on end as the temperature in the cabin dropped significantly. It felt like a cold storage room, freezing enough to make one shiver uncontrollably.
After a few seconds of shock, Bearded Man and the others quickly regained their composure. He shouted, “Damn it, it’s a zombie! Grab your guns and shoot her!”
He was the first to draw his pistol, firing several shots at the female corpse. The others followed suit with their Submachine Guns, unleashing a barrage of bullets. They seemed to have gone mad; during the shooting frenzy, they howled as if venting their inner fears, their voices deafening.
The cabin erupted into chaos with screams and gunfire echoing everywhere. In the pitch-black space, only the sparks from gun muzzles were visible, creating a scene of utter disorder where it was impossible to tell who was who.
We quickly crouched down with our heads covered. Jiao Ba yelled with his hands over his ears, “Brother Yi, we’re done for! It’s too late to run now; that female corpse has gone berserk!”
I shouted back, “Let’s adapt to the situation!”
Shunzi gripped my arm tightly; I could feel him trembling all over. It was normal for this big boy to be scared after everything he had been through. I held his hand tightly, offering him what comfort I could.
The gunfire lasted for about half a minute before finally coming to an end. The cabin returned to silence, a dead silence that was thick and dark, sending chills down one's spine.
After a while, a curse broke the oppressive quiet: "Damn it, trying to scare me. I don’t believe I can’t kill you. Turn on the Underwater Light!" It was the voice of Bearded Man; I could tell he was trembling slightly. If he hadn’t had a gun in his hand, he probably would have run away by now.
Once the Underwater Light was turned on, the cabin regained its original brightness. Bearded Man looked down with his Flashlight at the Marauder, and his face turned pale. The Marauder was dead, and the sight was horrific. He floated in the seawater of the cabin, no longer resembling his former self. His skin was charred black as if he had been poisoned, and his body was as thin as a skeleton.
His two fish-like eyes bulged outward, and the twisted expression on his face along with the wound on his neck testified to everything that had just happened. The Coffin Corpse was nowhere to be seen, but there were some green, viscous substances around the coffin that I couldn’t identify. With the light from Bearded Man's Flashlight, I could see it all clearly.
Yet, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that the female corpse wouldn’t be so easily dealt with; danger still lurked. I no longer wanted to use her to kill Bearded Man; instead, I was thinking about how to escape this place. Suddenly, I realized this was a grave mistake—I was playing with fire.
"Yi... Brother Yi, what just happened?" Shunzi asked softly beside me.
I stared intently at the coffin as I replied, "I don’t know; all I know is that Marauder is dead."
"Brother Yi, what about Mai Lao?" Jiao Ba's words reminded me that old man Mai Lao was missing. What happened? Where did the Old Man go? He had been right next to me just moments ago and now he had vanished.
Shunzi looked around and said, "Could he have been shot and fallen into the water?"
I whispered back, "No way; that Old Man probably ran away."
I guessed he must have taken advantage of the chaotic gunfire to escape. This Old Man was something else! While I didn’t dare move during the random shooting, he managed to slip away silently without being noticed by the Marauder at the door. Impressive! The Old Man truly wasn’t ordinary; my interest in him grew stronger. If I made it out alive, I would definitely have to ask him some questions.
I didn’t have time to worry about where the Old Man had gone; we needed to leave quickly. I saw that Bearded Man and the others were all drawn towards the Coffin Corpse. I pulled Jiao Ba and Shunzi along and shook my head, planning to make a run for it first. We huddled against the wall and prepared to slip away.
"Don't move! Where do you think you're going?" The voice of the Bearded Man suddenly rang out.
I turned to glance at him; he was pointing a gun at me, his face filled with hostility. The others in his group also aimed their guns at us. I forced a smile and said, "Oh, it's nothing. Since we've helped you find your treasure, I think we have no business here anymore, right?"
I nudged Jiao Bayi, and he quickly chimed in, "Yes, yes! You've found the treasure; staying here would just be a nuisance to you."
The Bearded Man sneered, "I think you're trying to run away, aren't you? Brat, don't think I don't know. You didn't bring me here to find any treasure; you want to use that female corpse against me, right?"
My heart sank. This fat man was sharper than I thought! He had figured it out. I exchanged glances with Jiao Ba. Maintaining my calm demeanor, I replied, "How could that be? If I were lying to you, wouldn't you just shoot me? I'm only trying to help; now that you've got your treasure, isn't everything just fine?"
The Bearded Man narrowed his eyes and said, "You little brat, do you really think I'm an idiot? What about the Old Man? Where did he go?" He had noticed that Mai Lao was missing. As soon as he said this, his men began shining their flashlights around, but it was all in vain; there was nothing but bones.
I raised my hands and said, "I was just about to look for him! The moment I heard the commotion, he disappeared."
With a loud bang, the Bearded Man fired a shot into the sea in front of me. His face darkened as he said, "Brat, I'm asking you one last time: where is the Old Man? If you don't tell me now, the next shot will be aimed at your head."
I lowered my hands and widened my eyes. "You should worry about protecting your own head first," I replied because I saw that the female corpse in the coffin had started to rise again...
