I suddenly turned around and shone my flashlight. Less than three meters away from me, something was lurking underwater, slowly approaching. I couldn't see what it was, but I knew for certain that it wasn't coming to shake my hand; it was definitely here to take my life.
I instinctively took two steps back. Jiao Ba shouted anxiously behind me, "Brother Yi, run! Run!"
Honestly, I wanted to run too, but the cabin was so small—where could I go? Outside the hatch were Bloodsucker Worms, and even if I managed to escape, it would still mean death. Since both options led to death, I might as well wait for the end. I kept my eyes fixed on the movement of the water as it drew closer.
I hurriedly stepped back a few more paces, trying to maintain some distance from that thing. When it was about two meters away, it finally stopped. Slowly, a dark mass surfaced, followed by a pale human face and a pair of blood-red eyes.
Damn it, it really was that female corpse! No wonder I couldn't find her; she had been underwater all along. As she fully emerged, the air in the cabin seemed to freeze. Those blood-red eyes were fixed on me, sending a chill down my spine. Her gaze was terrifying, somehow even more sinister than before. I could see green stripes on her face, resembling tattoos.
"Brother Yi, hurry up and run!" Jiao Ba's anxious voice echoed behind me. It wasn't that I didn't want to run; I simply couldn't move. When that female corpse locked her blood-red eyes onto mine, I found myself staring back at her. I completely forgot Jiao Ba's warning about not looking into her eyes for too long; otherwise, I'd be doomed.
My body felt uncontrollable; my chest tightened as if my soul had been snatched away. I stood there in a daze, feeling much weaker than before—as if my heart might stop at any moment. Just as dizziness began to overwhelm me and hallucinations threatened to take hold, I finally snapped back to reality.
In my fixation on the female corpse, I had overlooked the Bearded Man. Taking advantage of my distraction, he grabbed my neck from behind. He intended to strangle me to death, but unexpectedly, his action saved me. The force with which he tightened his grip caused me to fall directly into the water.
As the seawater splashed against my face, I gradually regained consciousness. I quickly drew out my dagger and stabbed it into the Bearded Man's leg. "Ah! You bastard!" he cursed in pain, loosening his grip on my neck. He stumbled back a few steps and turned to flee.
I got up and shouted at Jiao Ba, "Lao Ba, don't let that bastard get away! Catch him!"
"Got it, Brother Yi!" Jiao Ba yelled back, sounding like he was rushing over.
At that moment, I suddenly remembered the female corpse. I quickly turned my head, and as I did, I nearly fell to the ground in shock. The corpse was standing right in front of me, less than half a meter away. If her face moved just a little closer, it would almost touch mine.
My blood felt like it was about to flow backward. I could clearly hear a beast-like growl emanating from her mouth, filled with rage and murderous intent. This time, I didn’t dare to be foolish; I avoided staring directly into her eyes. Instead, I awkwardly smiled and said, “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
As soon as the words left my mouth, the female corpse grabbed my shoulders with both hands and opened her bloody mouth wide, lunging for my neck. I could see that what had once been a beautiful face had instantly transformed into something grotesque. Her teeth were like serrated edges, all sharp fangs, more terrifying than any beast in the jungle.
I instinctively tried to break free from her grip, but her strength was overwhelming. I couldn’t escape. Just as her razor-sharp teeth were about to touch my neck, I unleashed all the potential energy within me. With all my might, I pushed outward with my arms and wedged my knife hand directly into her mouth.
That was close! She almost bit me—only a few centimeters separated us. If she had gotten a hold of me, I would have quickly become a lifeless corpse myself. The blade was perfectly lodged in her mouth. With a swift motion, I pulled my body down and broke free from her grasp, taking a large step back to create some distance.
Seeing that she had missed her bite, the female corpse became even angrier, her growls intensifying. I couldn’t afford to be careless; the sounds of Jiao Ba and Bearded Man fighting echoed in my ears, but I didn’t have time to focus on them. I needed to figure out how to solve the immediate problem: how could I escape this situation?
As I pondered these questions, the female corpse suddenly lunged at me again. I had been prepared for this moment; leaning back, I raised my left hand holding the gun and fired three shots—bang bang bang! All three bullets struck the corpse’s body before she could reach me, and she fell straight into the water.
I quickly retreated. Deep down, I knew that the female corpse wouldn’t die so easily; after enduring those two fierce attacks earlier without a scratch, these bullets were nothing to her.
Taking advantage of this moment, I shouted loudly, “Lao Ba, how’s Shunzi doing?”
Jiao Ba’s voice came back: “Brother Yi, I'm fine, but that dead fat man is missing; I can’t find him.” The cabin was pitch black except for the faint light from the Flashlight next to the coffin that was flickering—it seemed to be running out of batteries. I couldn’t see Jiao Ba, so it made sense he couldn’t find Bearded Man. That guy was good at hiding; let him stay hidden for now.
“Don’t worry about him; just protect Shunzi.” My gaze remained fixed on the female corpse lying in the water. After waiting for about four or five seconds without seeing any movement from her, could it be that she really was dead?
Damn it! My mind was struggling to comprehend; after all, she was already dead. I needed to go check for myself. Just as I was about to approach her for verification, suddenly the female corpse shot up from the water. I raised my hand and fired several more shots—bang bang bang! But she merely staggered back a few steps and didn’t fall even after all my bullets were spent.
I was a bit stunned; I was out of bullets, and I had nothing left to buy time. I shouted loudly, "Lao Ba, Lao Ba, hurry up and retreat, I'm out of bullets!"
"Damn it, Brother Yi, I want to retreat too, but where can we go? There's no way out!" Jiao Ba's anxious voice came from nearby. I couldn't see him and had no idea whether Shunzi was alive or dead.
"Fuck it, if there's no way out, then make one! Just like last time, crash the boat through!" I felt a bit frantic; this time, I sensed that death was getting closer and closer...
