When the terrifying howl echoed from the depths of the sea, the group of sharks that had intended to attack me instantly scattered, as if they had seen a ghost, fleeing in all directions like headless flies. In the blink of an eye, they vanished completely.
The sound lasted for about ten seconds before fading away. Holding my Underwater Light, I stood there like an idiot for over a minute, trying to regain my composure. What the hell was that roar? I couldn't pinpoint its location just by hearing it, as the sound seemed to resonate throughout the entire seabed, coming from all directions.
However, I had to be grateful for that roar! Without it, I might have ended up dead right here. Shunzi had already escaped to the surface and was probably back on the boat by now. I steadied myself and prepared to set off again; since I was already underwater, I needed to find something worthwhile before heading back.
I unhooked my safety line and turned around. Just a short distance into my swim, I was stunned by what lay before me. With the help of my Underwater Light, I clearly saw that less than twenty meters ahead was a vast Dark Sea Area.
This darkness enveloped the depths of the ocean, resembling what I had seen with Landmine back then. This dark sea region felt isolated from the world, exuding an air of mystery and eeriness. Even from this distance, I could sense its chill and terror. In that dark expanse, I felt an inexplicable sensation as if a pair of eyes were secretly watching me.
This feeling made me very uncomfortable; it was a tension that radiated from deep within. I was eager to know what lurked in that sinister sea area. What kind of Unknown Creature had killed Landmine? Now I finally understood why those sharks dared not approach; if I wasn't mistaken, it was because of this dark zone before me.
The Wreck might be hidden within it. Excited by this thought, I quickly swam toward that area. As I got closer, the chill intensified; the icy water felt as if it could penetrate my skin and reach my bones. At that moment, I hesitated. Remembering that day’s events made me stop involuntarily.
If I recklessly ventured in alone, I could easily end up dead! Last time, Landmine had shielded me; this time there would be no one to protect me. If I encountered that creature again, I'd be completely helpless.
Just as I was torn between indecision, I faintly heard that roar again, but this time it was much quieter than before. Straining to listen, it seemed to come from within that dark sea area. Could it be some creature lurking inside?
It wasn’t impossible; this place was an unknown and dangerous territory. I decided to return to the fishing boat and discuss with Mai Lao before taking any further action. If I went in alone, there was a hundred percent chance I'd meet my end inside. Without hesitation, I surged upward toward the Sea Surface.
A few minutes later, I broke through the surface of the water. The afternoon sun shone brightly down on me, and as its warmth enveloped me, I felt a sense of comfort—a reminder of life's presence.
I had already detached from the safety line, but I knew very well that the fishing boat should be just ahead of me. I swam steadily for about twenty minutes when I finally spotted our boat. There were many people on the deck; it seemed that everyone else had returned.
I stretched out my hand and shouted loudly, "Hey~~~ Hey~~~ over here!"
I saw Jiao Ba standing at the bow, pointing in my direction. The fishing boat quickly came over, and soon a ladder was lowered. I climbed up the ladder with relief.
Once back on the boat, I hurriedly removed my Oxygen Tank and plopped down on the deck, gasping for breath as I said, "Phew~~~ Phew~~~ Damn, I finally made it back! I'm exhausted." This trip into the sea had been another life-and-death struggle, which certainly drained a lot of my energy, but I was still grateful! At least I was alive.
"Loyalty and Righteousness, how are you?" Jenny asked with concern.
"I'm fine, nothing happened," I replied, looking up at her with a grin.
At that moment, Shunzi rushed over and said, "Brother Yi, Brother Yi, are you okay? I was so worried!"
I patted his arm and said, "I'm fine, see? How about you? Did your wound reopen?"
"Yeah, it did flare up again, but it's nothing serious. I'm just glad to see you back," Shunzi said, his eyes slightly red; he must have cried. He probably thought I wouldn't make it back this time. It's understandable—being surrounded by a pack of sharks in the deep sea would scare anyone. I really did cheat death this time.
"Loyalty and Righteousness, it's great that you're back! We were just about to go into the sea to rescue you," Mai Lao said as he squatted down and patted my shoulder. I smiled and nodded at him.
"Yeah, Brother Yi! When Shunzi came back and said you encountered sharks, I almost jumped into the sea to find you! You're something else! Surviving an encounter with a school of sharks—I'm increasingly impressed by you," Jiao Ba said seriously while giving me a thumbs-up.
I glanced at him and replied, "Impressed? What’s there to be impressed about? I almost died! If it weren't for that scream, I'd have been done for."
"Ghostly sound? What ghostly sound?" Jiao Ba asked, looking puzzled. The others exchanged glances, seemingly not understanding my words either.
"Yeah, what do you mean by ghostly sound?" Mai Lao adjusted his glasses and looked at me curiously.
I forced myself to stand up and said, "Let's go back to the rest area and talk there! I need to change my clothes first."
After drying off, I changed into warmer clothing. It was freezing in the underwater environment. We made our way back to Jenny's rest area. Once I sat down, I took a cigarette from Jiao Ba's hand, lit it, and after taking a couple of puffs, I recounted what had happened: "So here's the thing. To put it simply, I don't know what that sound was, but that's how it went down."
"Mai Lao, what do you think that sound could be?" Jiao Ba tossed the question back to the old man. For some reason, he always liked to throw difficult questions at him.
Mai Lao shook his head helplessly and said, "Well... I really don't know. I've never seen sharks collectively flee from a certain sound before. It's embarrassing; as a Marine Biology Professor, I've been out at sea for so long and yet I'm stumped by this."
Jiao Ba glanced at me with a smug expression. At that moment, Jenny spoke up, "Could it be a sound caused by an underwater volcanic eruption?"
"No way, absolutely not. Underwater volcanoes are over a thousand meters deep! How could that sound travel so far? And even if it could, it wouldn't produce such a strange ghostly sound," Jiao Ba explained.
Suddenly, I remembered something important: "Oh right, I forgot to tell you guys earlier. I encountered that dark sea area again in the deep underwater zone, and it seems that ghostly sound came from that area."
