I listened carefully, and there was indeed some noise outside the Hatch. I glanced at the others; except for Li Xin, everyone else seemed a bit dazed, even Shunzi, whose gaze appeared somewhat lost. It was strange; it was as if no one had heard anything.
I gestured to Li Xin, indicating that there was a sound outside.
Li Xin nodded and signed back, "Yes, I heard it too. It sounds like someone is opening the Hatch."
Who could it be? Could it be Mai Lao and Jiao Ba? At that moment, the noise outside the Hatch grew louder, and the Hatch began to move. I reminded everyone to step back a bit and get their Spears ready, just in case there was any danger.
Holding the Underwater Light in one hand and the Spear in the other, I fixed my gaze on the Hatch. Li Xin and Shunzi were similarly focused, each of us highly alert.
Accompanied by creaking sounds, the Hatch opened a small crack, and then a pair of hands reached in, pulling hard on the Hatch. Upon closer inspection, I recognized the Diver's outfit. Without thinking too much, I quickly called for everyone to help; as long as it was a human being, we could deal with it.
Several of us inside grabbed hold of the Hatch and pulled with all our might. With more people comes greater strength; soon enough, the Hatch began to open wider. When it was finally large enough for a person to pass through, light from outside shone in.
I hurriedly shielded my eyes with my hand; the brightness made it impossible to see who was there. Once the light shifted away, I saw that it was Jiao Ba outside—just as I suspected.
Jiao Ba was anxiously signaling, "Hurry up, Brother Yi! There's no time!"
Oxygen was running low. I signaled everyone to hurry out; the Hatch was already more than halfway open. Li Xin, Shunzi, and other sailors quickly swam out of the cabin.
Finally, Jiao Ba grabbed my arm and pulled me out with force. Just as I emerged from the Hatch, it slammed shut with a loud bang. I quickly turned to look back; Mai Lao was at the edge of the cabin—it must have been him who pried open the Hatch. If it weren't for them this time, we might still be stuck inside; after all, prying open that stubborn Hatch took time.
I gestured to him and asked, "How did you guys get here?"
Mai Lao gestured, "We'll talk about it later, there's no time."
He waved his hand, signaling us to hurry and leave. Following the same path, we quickly made our way back. However, as we passed by the group of white, elongated creatures, trouble arose again. If we slowed down, there wouldn't be enough oxygen, and we would suffocate.
But if we forced our way through, we might get entangled by those ghostly beings. Once they caught us, our fate would be uncertain. Mai Lao paused for a moment while Jiao Ba beside him quickly gestured, "What should we do? Should we force our way through?"
Mai Lao looked at Jiao Ba, seemingly torn and did not respond.
At that moment, Li Xin also panicked. She nudged Mai Lao and gestured urgently, "Think of something fast; we're running out of oxygen."
The other sailors were getting frantic as well, all demanding to charge through. At this point, I gestured to Mai Lao, "I'll distract those creatures; you all take the chance to escape."
I had already considered that if we all charged together, it could lead to our demise. The only solution was to find someone to draw their attention away. But who would be willing to take on such a dangerous task? After thinking it over, I realized I had no choice but to step up myself. It wasn't about being heroic; it was about responsibility. If I agreed to let them leave early, perhaps this situation wouldn't have arisen.
Mai Lao glanced at me and gestured, "No way, it's too dangerous."
I anxiously gestured back, "There's no time for discussion; it's settled." Before he could respond, I dashed forward.
I raced toward the group of white creatures; this was a life-or-death gamble. As I tried to rush past them, the ghostly beings seemed energized and crazily chased after me. Perfect; this was the reaction I wanted. I hoped Mai Lao and the others could use this opportunity to escape.
I pushed myself forward with everything I had. Just as I was about to break free from that area, I suddenly got entangled by those creatures. The white elongated beings wrapped around me like water snakes, constricting my entire body. I felt like my blood was about to burst from my veins. At that critical moment, my oxygen ran out.
Holding my breath, I desperately pulled out my Paratrooper Knife and frantically sliced through the creatures wrapping around me. When my body regained freedom, I removed my Oxygen Tank and shot upward with all my strength. The pressure underwater was immense, making it hard for my body to cope.
I had no idea how far I was from the Sea Surface, but my consciousness was fading fast. As I gradually lost awareness, I thought I saw a figure swimming rapidly toward me…
"Cough... cough..." I spat out several mouthfuls of water, and amidst the violent coughing, I finally woke up. Blurrily, I opened my eyes and saw a few familiar faces. The sky was still dark, and I had no idea how long I had been unconscious.
"Hey, Loyalty and Righteousness, you're awake! How do you feel?" Jenny asked as she looked at me.
I forced a smile and replied, "I'm okay, not dead yet. How long was I out?"
"Just a few minutes. Don't worry, you're fine," Mai Lao said with his eyes narrowed.
I tried to sit up, but my whole body ached. Jiao Ba hurried over to support me. I braced myself and stood up, asking, "Mai Lao, did you save me?" I wasn't sure who had rescued me, but I definitely felt someone carrying me all the way to the Sea Surface.
Mai Lao patted my shoulder and said, "Didn't you save all of us too? You're something else."
I chuckled lightly and then looked around. Besides our group, there was no one else on the deck. "Where is everyone? Why are we the only ones here?"
Mai Lao quickly replied, "I told them to go back and rest. We'll talk about everything tomorrow; everyone is tired. You should get some sleep too." He nodded with a smile and turned to head back into the cabin.
I still had many questions for them, but since Mai Lao said so, I would have to wait until tomorrow. "I'll rest early too," I said with a smile before leaving as well.
I glanced at Jiao Ba and asked, "Lao Ba, how did you and Mai Lao end up in the cabin?"
Jiao Ba raised an eyebrow and said, "Come on, you’re asking? We waited outside the Wreck for half an hour for you two and didn’t see you come back. We were worried something happened to you, so we went in."
I nodded and said, "So that's what happened. Was there anything going on inside the ship?"
Jiao Ba shook his head. "Nope, nothing's damaged inside the ship. Aside from the gap in the bow, we haven't found anything else wrong. How about inside the cabin? Any progress?"
The words of Jiao Ba reminded me of the bizarre events I had just experienced in the cabin, especially the face of that female corpse. How could she appear before me? What was going on? If it were just a hallucination, it felt too real. Moreover, the various signs indicated that this was not merely an illusion. Could it be that the female corpse had followed me all the way? That seemed impossible; it was simply too absurd.
"Hey, Brother Yi, what's wrong? Why are you lost in thought?" Jiao Ba's voice pulled me back from my contemplation.
I shook my head and replied, "Oh, nothing. Let's talk about these things tomorrow. By the way, have you found out what that Small Gold we took from the corpse's mouth is?"
It had been several days since I last asked him, and I hadn't had the time to do so. Every day in Shanghai was exhausting, and when I returned, I just wanted to rest.
Jiao Ba whispered in my ear, "I did some checking, but I couldn't find anything. This object looks very strange; it's not recorded in my grandfather's notebook. However, based on my judgment, it definitely isn't just gold. Maybe it's really a key like you said."
I glanced at him and quietly said, "If you couldn't find anything, that's fine. I'll find out sooner or later. Just keep it safe."
"Don't worry, Brother Yi. I've already hidden it away. I have a feeling that this wreck holds information we want," Jiao Ba said seriously, his tone dark.
"Let's hope so, Lao Ba. We should head back now; I'm completely worn out." Jiao Ba supported me as we made our way to the resting quarters.
Once we returned to the resting quarters, I saw Shunzi and the other sailors already asleep. Perhaps the sound of the door had startled Shunzi awake; he sat up suddenly with a serious expression. But upon seeing me, he returned to his usual smile. "Brother Yi, are you okay?"
"Don't worry; Brother Yi is doing just fine," Jiao Ba said as he helped me onto the bed.
I lay down and waved my hand dismissively. "I'm fine; let's sleep. I'm too tired..."
