The fishing boat started its engine and headed towards the dark sea area. The sky was not yet fully dark, and the sunset painted a beautiful scene, casting a golden reflection on the sea surface. However, I had no time to appreciate this moment of beauty. Soon, the boat came to a halt; we had arrived above the Dark Sea Area.
I slapped my face with my hand to shake off any drowsiness and get myself fully alert. Jiao Ba, grinning beside me, said, "What are you doing, Brother Yi? Getting a beauty treatment?"
"Beauty treatment my foot! I'm just trying to wake myself up," I replied, stretching my neck to get the blood flowing.
"Heh heh, you seem a bit nervous. Has your courage shrunk even more?" Jiao Ba teased, still wearing that playful grin. He was already geared up and ready to dive at any moment.
I shot him a glance and said, "It's not that I'm scared; things are just getting more dangerous. Stay alert, kid."
At that moment, Mike called out, "Alright everyone, pay attention to safety and prepare to dive." As soon as the old man finished speaking, he was the first to jump in.
The rest of us quickly followed suit. This time Li Xin also descended with us into the sea; it seemed she intended to stick with us for the duration. To save time, we dove quickly. The waves were calm today, and since it wasn't dark yet, the deep sea below remained a vibrant blue.
Mai Lao led the way as we closely followed behind him. Within just a few minutes, I spotted a vast area of darkness ahead. This had to be the dark sea area. However, looking down from above revealed something entirely different from what lay beneath.
From above, this area resembled a massive cloud—pitch-black clouds with some dark mist swirling around them, appearing even more eerie than the depths of the ocean. As we drew closer, Mai Lao suddenly halted; we quickly followed suit.
It was then that I noticed something astonishing: within that cloud-like Dark Sea Area, there were flickers of electric light—dense flashes appearing and disappearing sporadically. Unlike thunder and lightning, these electric lights only manifested within the Dark Sea Area and did not stray into other waters.
We all floated above the Dark Sea Area. Everything felt so unfamiliar to me. I gestured to Mai Lao and asked, 'What is going on?'
Mai Lao shook his head lightly and gestured, "I don't know, it feels like there's electricity."
I continued to gesture, "Should we go in now?"
Mai Lao waved his hand, signaling everyone not to act recklessly. We quietly observed the dark sea, where flashes of electricity flickered intermittently, yet there was no sound at all. Not a single creature was visible nearby; even the most common Plankton was absent. It felt like a dead sea, with a chilling silence enveloping the entire area.
We watched for about five minutes, but Mai Lao still hadn't given any orders. It wasn't a viable strategy to just wait indefinitely. Just as I was pondering what to do next, a figure swam past me—it was Shunzi. He headed straight for the pitch-black waters.
Instinctively, I wanted to stop him, but by the time I reacted, it was too late. The pressure of the deep sea slowed my movements. I reached out but couldn't catch him in time. I panicked and shouted, watching helplessly as he was about to plunge into the depths.
At that critical moment, Mai Lao grabbed Shunzi's calf from behind and immediately halted his movement. Thankfully, Mai Lao was close enough; if he had been any farther away, Shunzi would have gone under. If something had happened, I would have felt guilty for a lifetime.
Shunzi was pulled back by Mai Lao, who was visibly angry this time. He pushed Shunzi slightly and glared at him while gesturing, "Are you crazy? Do you want to die?"
Shunzi calmly gestured back, "We have to try something; we can't just keep waiting like this."
Suddenly, an idea struck me. I quickly swam in front of them and tossed my Underwater Light into the dark sea. As the Underwater Light made contact with the Dark Sea Area, its descent noticeably slowed down, as if it were sinking into a muddy swamp. The electric flashes in the Dark Sea Area flickered around the light. Once the Underwater Light was completely submerged, its glow vanished instantly.
By all logic, a strong light source shouldn't disappear so quickly; even in low visibility underwater, there should be some faint glimmers visible. Yet now, upon entering the Dark Sea Area, everything became utterly invisible as if it had completely vanished. There were no particularly strange phenomena either.
I glanced at Mai Lao, seeking his opinion. At that moment, Jiao Ba and Li Xin swam over. He gestured, "Hey Mai Lao, should we go down? I don't see anything wrong."
I gestured as well, "We can give it a try."
Li Xin and Shunzi, along with others, remained silent, except for the Shandong Giant who was signaling, "Let's leave one person here for backup."
Mai Lao quickly made a decision, signaling, "You stay behind while the rest of us go down. If we haven't surfaced in twenty minutes, just head back to the boat and wait."
The Shandong Giant nodded. Mai Lao then signaled for us to dive in. Since my Underwater Light had run out, I could only follow the others. I swam in the middle, where the lights from both sides were enough for me to observe my surroundings.
Mai Lao intended to test the waters first. As his hand reached into the Dark Sea Area, I felt a wave of anxiety for him, fearing something terrible might happen. Fortunately, nothing occurred. He nodded at us, and we cautiously advanced into the dark waters. My first impression was that it was getting darker by the moment.
As I swam deeper, I felt a strange current surging around me; it was more like a magnetic field that tightened around me uncomfortably. At first, it wasn't too bad, but within half a minute, I realized a serious problem.
My vision became increasingly blurred; I could no longer see my companions and could only vaguely make out their lights. After another ten seconds passed, I was stunned to find that all light had vanished. I was engulfed in darkness with almost zero visibility—completely blind.
I groped around with my hands but found nothing. It felt as if I had fallen into an abyss. I forced myself to remain calm; even though I couldn't see anything, as long as I kept diving downwards, I should be able to break through this darkness. I swam downward with all my strength.
Yet, there seemed to be a force pushing me upwards. Though it wasn't strong, it was perfectly timed. After about ten minutes of swimming downwards, it was still pitch black; I couldn't see anything and felt as if I hadn't moved at all. No matter how hard I tried to push downwards, everything remained dark.
Finally, unable to hold on any longer, I flipped over and began swimming upwards. Ascending was noticeably faster than descending. However, when I broke through the surface of the Dark Sea Area, the Shandong Giant was nowhere to be found. Hadn't it been less than twenty minutes? Where had he gone? Mai Lao and Jiao Ba hadn't returned either; I was now alone drifting in this deep sea.
I swam quickly upwards, planning to check back at the boat. But when I surfaced, I was stunned—the vast ocean surrounded me with nothing else in sight; even the fishing boat had vanished without a trace...
