"That's true, Brother Changshan is right. Those people in the Ditch are cursed by the river, which is why they are trapped underwater and can never escape. They must have tried to cross the river before, but unfortunately, they were all swallowed by it," Jiao Ba said, standing up and looking coldly at Changshan.
"However... I'm curious how you know this, Brother Changshan?" Jiao Ba suddenly asked again, his tone almost identical to when he questioned Mai Lao, filled with skepticism.
Changshan did not answer him but instead replied with a question, "Didn't you think of that too?"
Jiao Ba nodded and said, "Yeah, that's true. I didn't expect there would be so many capable people among us; each one is more impressive than the last." His words were laced with sarcasm and doubt.
"Enough! Stop bickering over such trivial matters. We need to think about what to do next. Regardless of whether it's a curse or not, we are trapped here now. If we can't figure out a way to leave, we'll all die here," Jenny finally couldn't hold back any longer and shouted in frustration.
Little Tiger, who had never spoken up before, chimed in, "I... I'm scared. Are we going to die here? I... I don't want to die." Little Tiger was just a Maintenance Worker; it was truly unfortunate for him to be caught up on this deserted island.
I walked over and put my arm around his shoulder. "Don't be afraid; everything will be fine. We'll get off this island."
Mai Lao calmed down and said, "Whether it's a curse or not, since we've come this far, we can't back down. We have to fight our way through."
"There are ways; as long as we can leap over this Ditch, we'll be fine," Jiao Ba said as he gestured a jumping motion with his hand.
"That's basically saying nothing. Who doesn't know we need to jump over? But how can we actually do that?" Shunzi squatted on the ground and glared at him coldly.
I sighed as I crouched down and inadvertently noticed the rope on the ground. Suddenly, an idea struck me—a method that wasn't exactly a solution but still worth considering. "I've got it! With this rope, we might still have a chance."
I immediately stood up and picked up the rope from the ground. This was the rope we had intentionally left behind while making the Raft earlier; it was about a hundred or eighty meters long—more than enough to cross this Ditch.
"We have the rope, but who will go across to tie it?" Big Guy asked me.
“Spear, with the power of the Spear to 'shoot', can directly embed itself into the large tree across from us. We can tie a rope to another tree over here, and one person can go over at a time. It should be fine; we can't underestimate the nun.” The tip of the Spear has a hook, allowing it to latch onto objects when shot, and there’s also a Rope Clip below it to carry the rope along.
“Is that really going to work?” Jenny asked, sounding doubtful.
“Whether it works or not, we have to try. Loyalty and Righteousness, let’s do it your way,” Li Xin agreed with my plan this time.
Mai Lao and the others didn’t oppose either. There were no other options left, and time was running out. Life and death hung in the balance; we had to try whatever method we could, even if it meant risking our lives.
I took the Spear. It was a large one, with considerable power capable of piercing through a two-meter-long fish. I tied the rope securely beneath the spearhead, tightening it firmly.
Once everything was ready, I took a deep breath, raised the Spear, and aimed at the large tree across from us. Whether we would succeed depended on this shot. We stood above the Ditch, and all I needed to do was hit the lower part of the tree.
This would create a diagonal line that we could use to slide some items along the rope. This was our best plan so far. After finding my position, I steadied myself and shot it out.
The Spear embedded itself directly into the large tree across from the Ditch. I tied our end of the rope to the tree as well, then pulled down hard on the rope; it felt solid enough. One person should be able to cross without any issues.
“Alright, who’s going first?” I asked everyone.
“Uh… is this really safe?” Big Guy asked with concern.
I looked up at him. “Do you have any other ideas?”
Actually, everyone else seemed fine with it, but he and Mantou were truly in a tough spot. Big Guy was tall and much bulkier than Shunzi, weighing at least two hundred pounds. Mantou was simply overweight; he wasn’t very tall either but weighed nearly two hundred pounds as well. These two were definitely a problem.
“I don’t have any other ideas… I just…”
"Alright, if you're scared, let someone else go first." I interrupted Big Guy before he could finish his sentence.
Li Xin suddenly stood up and said, "Then I'll go first."
Jenny quickly grabbed her arm, looking a bit worried. "Are you sure you can do this?"
Li Xin turned her head and smiled. "Whether I can or not, we'll find out when I try."
"Maybe I should go first since it was my idea," I suggested, looking at Li Xin. After all, I couldn't let a woman take the lead.
Li Xin shook her head decisively. "No need. I believe this method will work."
She walked straight to the rope. I had to admire her for that; as a woman, she was willing to take the lead. This kind of courage was something most men couldn't match.
She grabbed the rope to test it, then took off her top and draped it over the rope. Grabbing both sides of the fabric, she fixed her gaze straight ahead.
"Be careful," I said as I watched her from the side.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine." After taking a few deep breaths, she took a running start. As she approached the edge, Li Xin tightened her grip on the fabric and flew off along the rope. Just as she had anticipated, she glided smoothly to the other side.
The moment she launched herself made my heart race; I was genuinely afraid something might go wrong midway. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and she landed safely.
Once Li Xin landed and put her clothes back on, she turned around and waved at us. "It's very safe; you all can come over now."
"Oh my god, we finally made it! Thank goodness it was uneventful. My heart was in my throat watching Li Xin just now," Jenny said, a rare smile breaking across her face. She had been so repressed lately that I hadn't seen her smile in ages.
I exchanged high-fives with Jiao Ba and the others, feeling a sense of relief wash over us. Finally, we could move on. I shared a glance with Mai Lao, both of us breaking into smiles. He patted my arm and said, "Well done, we can leave this place now."
Jenny was the second to take action, moving steadily across. Soon, everyone began to take turns crossing over, and I was left to bring up the rear. Before long, everyone except me and Big Guy had made it across.
Mai Lao shouted from the other side, "Loyalty and Righteousness, don’t just stand there! Hurry up and come over!"
I turned to Big Guy and said, "Stop dawdling! Get over here already; what are you waiting for?"
Big Guy looked pale and said, "I... I'm still a bit scared. How about you go first?" I couldn't believe it; this big guy had such little courage. He hadn't shown this kind of fear when we went into the sea; why was he acting like a scared mouse now?
I grabbed him and pulled him toward the rope. "Quickly take off your Diving Suit and drape it over the top so you can just go across."
"Wait, wait! Let me prepare a bit more," Big Guy stammered, his hands trembling as he gripped the rope. He looked as if he had just eaten something terrible.
I put my arm around his shoulder and said, "Listen, if you don’t cross now, we’ll all be over there without you. If you don’t make it across then, you’ll be stuck here."
As soon as I said that, Big Guy's face turned almost green. "Don't worry! It'll be fine; didn't Mantou make it across? Just go!" I reassured him one last time.
Big Guy nodded dumbly. After taking off his Diving Suit, he hesitantly shuffled forward. When he reached the Ditch, he was shaking so much that he couldn’t move.
Taking advantage of his distraction, I suddenly kicked him hard in the back, sending him tumbling down. He slid down the rope with a loud scream all the way to the other side.
Just as he landed on the opposite bank, he lost his balance and fell flat on his face in the mud. I couldn't help but crouch down and laugh heartily.
Even in this life-and-death situation, there was something so amusing about it. Everyone on the other side was laughing too, especially Mai Lao. Jiao Ba pointed at Big Guy while doubled over with laughter, looking like he might pass out from it all.
Big Guy furiously climbed up, turning around to point at me and shouting, "Jin Zhongyi, you bastard! Get over here, I’m going to beat you up!" His face was covered in mud, looking utterly disheveled.
I laughed and shouted back from across the way, "Aren't you afraid of twisting your tongue? I'm coming over so you can hit me."
I secured my diving suit and adjusted my mindset before sliding down the rope. However, just as I reached the middle of the Ditch, an unexpected problem arose. For some reason, my Diving Suit got stuck on the rope and wouldn’t budge, as if it had snagged on a steel wire inside the rope.
I pushed down with my feet, trying to swing my body free. But as soon as I moved, the rope began to sway violently up and down, and the Spear lodged in a tree was slowly shifting outward. If the entire Spear came loose, I would fall straight into the Ditch.
"Loyalty and Righteousness, what’s going on?" Mai Lao noticed I was stuck in the middle and realized something must have gone wrong.
I shouted back, "The Diving Suit is snagged; I need to get it loose."
Mai Lao replied anxiously, "Forget about the Diving Suit for now; just hurry and climb over here."
Forget about it? Without that Diving Suit, I'd be running around naked. "Mai Lao, help me hold the rope; I'm going down now."
I grabbed the rope with my left hand and pulled hard on the Diving Suit with my right. It was indeed caught on a steel wire inside. Just as I was about to free the Diving Suit, Jiao Ba suddenly shouted, "Brother Yi, watch out below you!"
