Mai Lao, Changshan, and Shunzi were at the front. When Mai Lao noticed that we had stopped, he immediately halted as well. "Loyalty and Righteousness, what happened behind? Why has everyone stopped? Hurry up!" Mike shouted, his voice hoarse with urgency.
I barely had time to respond. I could see the Strange Snake preparing to attack. Once that Strange Snake spat out that black liquid, anyone it touched would be doomed, leaving no trace behind.
I quickly used a branch to divert the Soul-Devouring Grass ahead of us, then forcefully threw Jenny over. She glanced back at me, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
I nodded at her and shouted to Mike, "You all go ahead; I'm going to save the others."
In this life-and-death moment, I couldn't afford to hesitate any longer. Since I was already cursed by the spirits here, what was there to fear? Perhaps living longer would be worse; it didn't matter if I lived just a little while longer.
All of this transpired in just a few seconds. I couldn't wait for Mai Lao to respond; I turned and dashed back. Li Xin and the others were already trapped. Jiao Ba was almost in tears as he cried out, "Brother Yi, please save me!"
But Li Xin shouted, "Loyalty and Righteousness, you all go! Don't worry about us!"
I couldn't leave anyone behind; absolutely not. I acted quickly, using my last branch to deflect the attack from the Soul-Devouring Grass ahead. With a swift motion, I charged forward and drew my Diving Knife.
Li Xin was very close to me. I aimed at several Strange Snakes in front of her and lunged forward. As I neared the ground, I swung my right hand holding the knife in a sweeping motion, severing the heads of several Strange Snakes.
However, this movement drew all those damned Strange Snakes toward me. In that instant, I had no time to turn around; like a turtle, I crawled backward as fast as I could while shouting, "Li Xin, run!"
Li Xin seemed momentarily stunned; if Jiao Ba hadn't suddenly rushed forward to pull her away, she would have stood there frozen. With Jiao Ba's action, Mantou and Big Guy hurriedly followed suit. They had temporarily escaped danger, and breaking free from this jungle was now within reach.
But I was in trouble; I nearly became sandwiched between attacks from both sides. If I hadn't been lying on the ground at that moment, there were several times when the Soul-Devouring Grass almost struck me. As they attacked me, they would collide with each other, and it was during these moments that I managed to escape danger—pure luck.
I was quite impressed with myself; crawling backward could actually be this fast. This group of Strange Snakes chased after me like madmen, their venomous spit nearly hitting my face multiple times.
Damn it! If this stalemate continued any longer, I'd surely die. In this critical moment of life and death, an idea struck me: I still had four grenades on me! I almost forgot such an important detail.
I wanted to use a grenade to blow these monstrous creatures to bits. It was a good idea, but right now, I simply didn't have the time. If I stopped for even a moment, they would likely catch up to me.
At this moment, no one could save me. All I could hear were Mai Lao and the others shouting anxiously, "Loyalty and Righteousness, run! Run!"
But there was nowhere left for me to escape. Finally, I steeled my resolve and decided to go down fighting. I would take these Strange Snakes down with me; if I was going to die at their hands, I might as well make it quick.
With that thought in mind, I immediately stopped and pulled out the grenade. A cold smile spread across my face as time seemed to freeze. I no longer feared anything; life and death were just a fleeting moment.
The Strange Snakes quickly closed in on me. I placed my hand on the grenade's pin and slowly closed my eyes, waiting for death to arrive. Just as I was about to pull the pin, a strange sound suddenly filled the air.
It sounded like a flute, a haunting 'woo-woo' echoing across the entire island. I hurriedly opened my eyes, and as the peculiar sound resonated, the Strange Snakes seemed to see a ghost; they all quickly dove underground, vanishing from my sight.
Around me, the petals of the Soul-Devouring Grass were slowly closing in, forming into a bud shape. The 'woo-woo' sound continued steadily without any fluctuation, ringing endlessly.
I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from; it felt as if it were right beside my ear. Slowly, I got back on my feet and realized that all the Soul-Devouring Grass in the jungle had closed their petals.
Once I stood up, they no longer attacked me; it was as if they had fallen asleep. Everything felt too surreal, and I stood there in a daze. What on earth was happening?
Where did this sudden sound come from? It seemed almost magical, capable of controlling these evil creatures. I turned around in confusion, unsure of what to make of it all.
This sound was definitely not a coincidence; what were the odds? Just when I was about to die, it appeared out of nowhere. It had to be intentional—who could it be? Could it be that Shriveled Old Man?
Other than him, I couldn't think of anyone else. I hadn't seen anyone else on this island. But if it really was him, why would he save me? That didn't make sense; wasn't he supposed to want us dead?
"Loyalty and Righteousness! Why are you still dawdling? Come over here!" Mai Lao's loud shout snapped me back to reality.
I hurriedly dashed out of the jungle. But as soon as I burst through the trees, the 'woo-woo' sound ceased. The Soul-Devouring Grass slowly opened its petals again, returning to its original state while those black snakes began to crawl out from underground once more.
“Loyalty and Righteousness, how are you? Are you alright?” Mai Lao stepped forward, grabbing my shoulders with a worried expression.
“Brother Yi, are you okay? You scared me to death,” Jiao Ba chimed in, his face turning pale.
Aside from Jenny and Li Xin, Shunzi and the others gathered around, repeatedly asking how I was doing and if I was hurt. I knew they were concerned for me, but I also understood that if it weren't for that strange voice earlier, they would have just watched me die without being able to help. No one could save me, the Evil Martial Arts Overlord.
It wasn't that they lacked loyalty; it was simply impossible. In that environment, rushing in would have meant death. The fact that I managed to walk out of that hellish jungle couldn't be attributed to mere luck; it was more like a benefactor had saved me.
I didn’t respond to their questions—not because I didn’t want to, but because I hadn’t yet recovered from what had just happened.
My mind kept replaying the events, pondering who had made that voice. I could only guess it might have been the Shriveled Old Man, but I had no evidence to support that. Regardless, I had at least been given a second chance at life; I could even say I owed this person my life.
There was also a lingering fear—an intense fear. Thinking back on it made me break out in a cold sweat. If that strange voice had come even a moment later, I would have truly pulled the Grenade pin. At that point, I would have become nothing more than dust; claiming not to fear death would have been pure nonsense.
“Brother Yi, say something! What’s wrong?” Jiao Ba waved his hand in front of my face and glanced around at the others.
“Loyalty and Righteousness, are you alright? Just say something!” Mai Lao patted my arm and looked at me with concern.
I glanced at him but remained silent. Suddenly, Big Guy piped up from the side, “Oh no, is this guy really stunned? He might have lost his mind.”
“Stop talking nonsense; Brother Yi is fine,” Shunzi shot him a glare.
“Hey, don’t be so sure. Look at him; he’s completely dazed. He probably got scared out of his wits—this is bad; he might really be brain dead,” Big Guy said as he playfully slapped my face.
I swatted his hand away and cursed, “Get lost! You’re the one who’s brain dead!”
Big Guy laughed heartily and said, “Whoa? You’re not brain dead? Looks like you’re really okay.”
“Loyalty and Righteousness Ah, it’s good that everything is fine. You’ve been dazed for quite a while and didn’t say a word. How could we not worry about you?” Mai Lao’s expression finally returned to normal.
“What exactly happened just now? Where did that sound come from?” I still couldn’t wrap my head around it and looked at everyone with confusion.
Mai Lao shook his head gently and said, “I don’t know. That sound was quite strange, and I couldn’t tell which direction it came from.”
“Yeah, it startled me too. It sounded just like those wild tribes, making a ‘woo-woo’ noise. I thought something big was about to happen, but who would have thought it actually saved Brother Yi. What a stroke of luck!” Shunzi said with a smile as he looked at me.
“All I want to know now is where that sound came from and who made it.” I asked everyone again; I needed to get to the bottom of this.
“Who knows? Could it be a natural sound coming from the island?” Mantou casually suggested.
“Impossible, absolutely impossible.” I immediately dismissed his idea.
Changshan then spoke up, “I don’t know where the sound came from, but one thing I can be sure of is that this sound can control these things. You all saw it; when the sound rang out, those strange flowers all closed up, and when it stopped, they opened again. In my opinion, the possibility of it being man-made is the greatest.”
“What Changshan said makes sense. This must be artificial; it’s obvious that some kind of device produced that sound. But who this person is, I can’t think of at the moment,” Jiao Ba said with a furrowed brow, looking deep in thought.
“It might be that Mysterious Shriveled Old Man. Yes, it should be him. I just can’t figure out why he saved me. He seems to have been following us all along. Is he an enemy or a friend? I need to find out more about this old man’s background.”
This old man saving me must have some reason behind it; I need to clarify this. This island truly hides secrets beyond what Jiao Ba and I can imagine...
