"How can you still be talking about useless things at a time like this? I'm counting to ten, and if you don't come up with a plan, I'm going to blow us all up. Just use the site!" I was truly furious; I'd rather be shot dead than be skinned alive by this group of Corpse.
"You don't understand, Loyalty and Righteousness. Once these corpses rise, their strength and speed increase dramatically. Jiao Ba doesn't want you to use the Grenade for a reason. If we anger them, those four Grenades won't be enough; they could bury us alive in an instant."
Changshan's explanation was somewhat acceptable. This Cemetery was far too vast; four Grenades were hardly enough for our escape. Through his words, I realized that he was definitely not a sailor. Even if he wasn't a tomb raider, he could very well be one of the men in black.
"Here's the deal: let's try not to provoke them. Damn it, since we arrived on the island, strange things have been happening. Someone must be stirring up trouble behind the scenes; otherwise, it wouldn't be like this." Jiao Ba continued his endless rambling.
"Enough of that; let's get out of here. There are fewer Corpses over there—hurry!" I noticed that to my left, there were indeed fewer Corpses, so without waiting for their agreement, I moved left without giving myself a chance to pause. We had to keep moving; we couldn't let this group of Corpses surround us.
Jiao Ba and Changshan quickly followed suit, but unfortunately, my judgment was flawed. We had barely taken two steps when several Corpses crawled out from the nearby Tomb Mound. They were armed with weapons, tilting their heads and emitting low growls while staring at us with lifeless eyes.
I swallowed hard and said, "Back up! Let's find another way to retreat."
"There’s no other place left, Loyalty and Righteousness. We're already surrounded; we might as well charge through." Changshan pulled out his dagger, ready for a fight with weapons in both hands.
I looked around; the Corpses were nearly blocking our path back. "Let's charge! There's no other choice."
I drew my Diving Knife, planning to find an opening to escape. Even though there were many Corpses around us, there was still a chance.
When faced with death, avoidance is futile; the best strategy is to push forward. Although I feared this island and the surrounding Corpses—indeed everything here—I wanted to unravel it all. So I had to find a way to survive.
"Then let's charge! Take care of yourselves and go!" Jiao Ba shouted as he led the way forward.
Changshan and I quickly followed suit. As soon as we moved, the surrounding Corpses went wild and rushed toward us. Their speed noticeably increased; while it wasn't lightning fast, it was certainly not slow either.
Their roaring voices echoed throughout the entire island, while the three of us charged forward like desperate fugitives, dodging when we could and forcing our way through when we couldn't.
Jiao Ba, usually laid-back, was anything but at this critical moment. His spear never stopped moving, and any Corpse that came near him was met with a swift thrust.
With his right hand, he drove the spear in, and his left hand followed up with a dagger that swiftly severed the Corpse's neck. He struck three or four times in quick succession, earning my respect.
Changshan was behind him; this guy was indeed extraordinary. His movements were clean and efficient, fast without a hint of hesitation. His techniques were straightforward and brutal, always ready to back up Jiao Ba at crucial moments.
No matter how impressive Jiao Ba was, he still paled in comparison to Changshan. I lagged behind them, with countless Corpses hot on my heels.
This scene was beyond description; it was more terrifying than charging into battle. Every moment felt like it could break me, as if I were merely a machine running endlessly.
When thousands of Corpses surged toward me, my mind went blank. It felt as if they couldn't be killed; they would fall only to rise again almost immediately.
“Lao Ba, can these Corpses be killed? What do we do?” I shouted desperately as I fought for my life.
“You have to sever their heads; otherwise, they won't die! Brother Yi, take care of yourself!” Jiao Ba shouted back. He stood atop a Tomb Mound, kicking one down before jumping off to continue his charge.
At that moment, several grotesque Corpses charged at me with unknown objects in their hands. I quickly dodged one attack and thrust my spear into its chest. Swinging my left arm, the Diving Knife plunged directly into its skull.
I kicked it down to the ground, but it quickly rose again, now even more ferocious than before. My God, this wasn’t working; this was truly troublesome.
Just then, a Corpse behind me grabbed my shoulder. I retaliated with a thrust of my spear and crouched down hard. Though I broke free from its grip, my spear was gone. Surrounded by an increasing number of Corpses, I felt myself nearing the brink of collapse.
As I was besieged by the horde of Corpses, Changshan and Jiao Ba suddenly charged back to help me out of the predicament; otherwise, I would have been done for. Even so, it seemed impossible for us to escape unscathed.
Jiao Ba spotted a bloody path and shouted, “Brother Yi, use a Grenade! Hurry!”
Without a word, I pulled out a Grenade, pulled the pin, and threw it directly into the mass of Corpses. The three of us jumped into a nearby grave to avoid the blast. With a loud bang, the Grenade exploded, scattering the surrounding Corpses into dismembered pieces that flew into our pit.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Jiao Ba shouted, "Let's go!"
We quickly crawled out of the grave and ran for our lives. In extreme danger, most people can tap into their hidden potential; after climbing out of the pit, I felt no fatigue at all.
However, my explosion only served to enrage the Corpses further. They howled like madmen, their speed increasing as they chased us down. I glanced back and saw them closing in—an ominous wave of dark figures that was more terrifying than any raging flood or beast. Anyone even slightly timid could easily die from sheer fright.
I shouted in desperation, "Damn it, Lao Ba! Think of something quick; those Corpses are almost on us!"
"I don't have any ideas! Just keep running!" Jiao Ba yelled back without looking.
I took out another Grenade and glanced back once more. The blood-red sky combined with the frenzied Corpses truly resembled hell itself—probably even worse than hell.
"I'm going to blow them up again." Just as I was about to pull the pin on the Grenade, I saw Mai Lao and his group sprinting towards us.
"It's Mai Lao! They're here to save us!" Jiao Ba sounded a bit excited. With more people around, our chances of escape naturally increased.
Changshan called out from behind me, "Wait a minute! Why are Mai Lao and his group running so fast?"
As soon as he spoke, I noticed that behind Mai Lao's group was another large crowd chasing them down. By the time we reached the small path up the hill, I could see clearly—it wasn't just any group; it was another mass of Corpses.
This new group of Corpses wasn't moving particularly fast, but their numbers were greater than those behind us—like a massive army of Corpses, each armed with weapons.
The most striking feature of this group was their decayed bodies, emitting a strong stench of rot that seemed to fill the entire island.
They were vastly different from the Corpses chasing us; these wore Qing Dynasty Official Uniforms. Some even had Qing Dynasty Officials' hats perched atop their heads and sported long braids—clearly identifying them as Qing Dynasty people.
I was momentarily bewildered. What the hell was going on? How could corpses from two different dynasties be buried on the same small island? This was completely illogical. How could such a bizarre thing exist in the world? Although the Ming and Qing Dynasties were close in time, they were still separated by several hundred years.
"Brother Yi, something big is happening! The corpse ahead is actually from the Qing Dynasty!" Jiao Ba's panicked voice came from the front.
"I see it! Run! The corpses behind are catching up!"
The three of us quickly regrouped with Mai Lao and the others. "Why haven't you left yet?"
"We were waiting for you. Who knew this would happen?" Mai Lao glanced around anxiously; the two groups of corpses were about to charge at us.
We barely had time to exchange another word before the two large groups of corpses were upon us. Mike shouted, "Charge up the mountain!"
We forced our way up the narrow path, creating a bloody trail as we ascended. I had to admit, while we usually didn't notice much, at this critical moment, everyone was showing their true colors.
I intentionally observed everyone's abilities to analyze who those two men in black were. So far, aside from Jenny, everyone was quite ruthless in their actions. Mantou and Big Guy were particularly terrifying, almost sweeping through the hordes of corpses without losing ground.
Mai Lao led Li Xin and Jenny, both of whom were also caught up in the frenzy. This was my first time seeing Mai Lao and Li Xin in action. During the fight, neither of them displayed exceptional combat skills; their speed, strength, and killing techniques were quite average.
Li Xin wasn't as formidable as Jenny had described. Mai Lao was decent enough, but compared to elite soldiers, there was still a noticeable gap. I felt that both of them were holding back and not using their full capabilities. Especially Mai Lao; during the fight, he seemed rather casual and not overly panicked...
