A mysterious amphibious creature known as the Bloodsucking Blanket is said to inhabit southern China.
The Bloodsucking Blanket, also referred to as the Mat, Ground Roll, or Green Fur Monster, has various names depending on the region.
It has been reported throughout Yunnan Province, particularly in the Xishuangbanna area near the border with Myanmar.
Typically described as a flat-bodied amphibian resembling a Vampire Blanket or Mat, it can measure up to two meters square or even larger. It hunts small to medium-sized mammals in water or in depressions near rivers.
Its back is covered in green or brown fur, while its underside is lined with numerous sharp Suction Cups used to attach and drain the blood of its prey until they are completely drained.
The earliest recorded sighting of the Bloodsucking Blanket can be found in a book by Chinese cryptozoologist Xu Chao titled "A Comprehensive Guide to Mysterious Animals in China."
In the summer of 1976 or 1977, a girl swimming in a pond in Ruili City, Yunnan Province, was attacked by a creature resembling a Vampire Blanket, which wrapped tightly around one of her arms.
Her father, acting swiftly to save her, severed her arm with a knife, fearing that if he did not act quickly, his daughter's blood would be drained.
Another incident occurred a few weeks later when a young man swimming in the same pond was dragged underwater by a floating shadow and drowned.
When his body was discovered, it was covered in many of the creature's Suction Cups.
The timing of the third incident varies in different accounts; one states it happened in 1993, while another claims it occurred in the autumn of 2000.
In Mengla County of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, two Dai brothers were capturing stone frogs in a cave along the riverbank, where they found numerous animal bones scattered throughout.
The younger brother accidentally spotted a Vampire Blanket spread out on the ground of the cave, mistaking it for bedding left behind by someone who had stayed there. He casually kicked it, but to his surprise, the Vampire Blanket suddenly soared into the air like a gust of wind, tightly wrapping around his feet. Almost immediately, he felt a tingling sensation shoot through his legs.
When the older brother heard his scream and rushed over, he found his sibling thrashing and rolling on the ground in a frenzy.
In a moment of desperation, the older brother raised his torch and directed the flames toward the creature. The air was filled with the acrid smell of burning hair as the monster recoiled from the heat, quickly shrinking away and rolling into a pool of water within the cave, vanishing from sight.
The younger brother's legs had already been torn apart by the creature, exposing the pale muscle beneath.
In their panic, the two quickly fled the cave.
The last incident, which became quite notorious, occurred on March 15, 2000. A fishing enthusiast named Lai Maoli was night fishing by the riverbank.
He was lost in thought, staring at the water's surface when he suddenly noticed a square black object floating in the middle of the river not far from him. It resembled a Vampire Blanket and was slowly drifting closer.
Out of curiosity, he approached the riverbank for a closer look and was startled to discover that one end of the Vampire Blanket had tiny eyes that glowed blue under the moonlight, while the other end sported a long tail.
Lai Maoli immediately realized this was a living creature and impulsively grabbed a stone to throw at it.
The creature was startled and suddenly leaped up, swiftly gliding toward the center of the river before disappearing from view.
However, that was not the end of it. Later that night, Lai Maoli heard his dog let out a chilling scream. He hurried to the riverbank.
On this outing, he had brought along two hunting dogs: one large and one small. Now, he saw that the Puppy was being dragged into the water by something, while Old Dog was desperately trying to pull it back.
Before long, a massive creature resembling a Vampire Blanket was dragged ashore by the Old Dog.
The creature seemed to sense Lai Maoli's approach and abandoned the puppy, plunging into the river and disappearing.
Although the puppy was not pulled into the water, it ultimately died from excessive blood loss, leaving behind a suction cup the size of a bowl on its body.
These are some of the more famous sightings that occurred in recent times.
During my research, I also came across some scattered records from the 2000s, the authenticity of which remains to be verified, so I won't list them all here.
Additionally, let me share something quite interesting.
In 2014, a domestic reality show organized several celebrities to venture to Xishuangbanna in search of traces of the Bloodsucking Blanket.
In the show, they indeed saw a mysterious object floating on the water's surface that resembled a Vampire Blanket, causing them to flee in fear.
Later, one of the actors revealed that it was a prop arranged by the production team.
This incident reminded me of the hoax surrounding the Loch Ness Monster; some people will do anything for attention.
