"Dad, you're back. I don't blame you anymore. Please come back..."
I was engulfed in sorrow, but life had to go on. My father's ashes had been scattered, yet his debts remained unpaid.
Once again, I found myself surrounded by Ma San's men. They questioned me aggressively, "How are you going to pay back the money your deadbeat father owed us?"
I tried to calm them down, "Just wait a bit longer; I'll pay you in a few days."
They laughed derisively, "Who do you think you are? You think just saying 'wait' is enough? I don't have that much patience."
I attempted to push past them, but someone grabbed my shoulder, and from behind came a lewd suggestion: "How about you spend the night with us? We'll give you a month to settle up, what do you say?"
"Hahaha..."
Laughter erupted among them.
I fought back desperately and seized the moment when they were distracted to make a run for it. But I barely got a few steps before someone yanked my hair, and I took several kicks to my body.
"You filthy bitch, dare to run?"
"If we don't teach you a lesson, you'll never learn."
I struggled fiercely, waiting for the right moment. As a fist swung toward me, I bent my body and dodged it. Then I targeted the weakest-looking guy and lunged at him.
But before I could strike back, there was a loud crash above me as a glass bottle shattered. Instinctively, I ducked. Guo Huai rushed in and took the blow for me.
Bright red blood streamed down from his head as he staggered a few steps, nearly falling over before he shakily approached me.
"Guo Huai!"
I hurried to support him, looking at the various bruises and scratches on his body, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
"Are you stupid? Didn't you see that message? Why did you come here?"
Guo Huai reached out to touch my head, but as soon as he lifted it, it fell back down. He weakly smiled at me. "Guo Fang, don't cry. The bad guy has already been caught. I'm here."
"Woo woo woo..."
I wanted to hold back, but I couldn't. My dad was gone, and Guo Huai was my only family left.
Guo Huai's injuries were serious. After he was taken to the hospital, the nurse treated his wounds while I stood by his side. There was a deep gash on his neck that required six stitches, and countless bruises and scratches covered his body. A bandage wrapped around his forehead, and there were several cuts on his face, making him look quite disheveled.
Yet he smiled at me and said, "Guo Fang, I'm fine. Don't worry."
"Mm."
I nodded through my sobs and turned away to wipe my tears. Guo Huai had gotten hurt because he saved me. I tried to calm myself down, but every time I thought of how injured Guo Huai was, tears would flow again.
My dad was gone, and Guo Huai got hurt because of me. Am I a disaster?
I took out my phone and checked the money left in my account before buying a train ticket. Then, I sent Ma San an address, letting him know I had money and that he could come find me. Guo Huai was at school, where he would be safe. But I knew that Guo Huai and I might never return to the way things were.
The days until my departure were growing closer, and I couldn't help but go to the back street square. Snowflakes drifted down from the sky, covering the ground in a white blanket. A few couples sat at the edge of the square, their happiness making me feel a bit dazed. If Guo Huai were to date someone in the future, it would probably be like this. He would find a girl who loved him more than I did, and they would get married and have children, living happily together.
I tilted my head back, trying hard not to let the tears fall, but deep down, I couldn't help feeling sad. Guo Huai, without me in your future, you must be happy.
"Guo Fang."
I turned around abruptly to see Guo Huai limping toward me.
"Guo Huai, you... why are you here?"
I looked at him nervously as he grasped my hand tightly.
"Come with me."
I shook my head. "Guo Huai, you should have your own future; you shouldn't be tied down by me."
