"Are you not getting a divorce?"
Zhou Yan looked at me, her eyes seemingly ready to burst into flames.
"Divorce?"
I scoffed, "You're right. I'm definitely getting out of this marriage!"
"Fu Yu, you bastard!"
Zhou Yan grabbed the spatula in her hand and threw it at me.
I caught the spatula and tossed it onto the floor.
"I'm leaving this marriage, no matter what!"
I stared at Zhou Yan, "If you don't want a divorce, then we'll see each other in court!"
With that, I opened the door and walked out.
"You bastard!"
Zhou Yan continued to curse from inside.
As I went downstairs, I heard Yang Fengping's voice.
"You can't get a divorce!"
"Why not?"
"If you get divorced, who will take care of this family?"
"I don't care; whoever wants to take care of it can do so. I don't have the patience for it."
"Then hire someone to take care of it."
"I have no money."
"No money? If you don't have money, don't expect to live well!"
"Mom, what do you mean by that?"
"Don't worry about it; anyway, you can't get a divorce!"
"I don't care; whoever wants to leave can leave."
"You stubborn girl, do you want a fight?"
I shook my head and sighed.
This family is hopeless.
By evening, Zhou Yan found her way to my house.
She knocked on the door loudly.
I opened it.
"What are you doing here?"
"This is my home; can't I come?"
As Zhou Yan spoke, she tried to push her way inside.
I reached out and stopped her.
"This is my home, not yours."
I stared at her. "As a mother, how can you throw your own daughter to someone else and go home to enjoy your life? What right do you have to call yourself a mother?"
Zhou Yan pouted, ignoring my words, and pulled a hairpin from her pocket, waving it in front of the door crack.
"Fei Fei, look what Mommy bought for you!"
Zhou Yan wore a smile on her face.
But there was no response from the room.
"Fei Fei, Mommy got you a toy."
Zhou Yan continued speaking.
Still, there was no sound from the room.
"I’ve already said it; you don’t deserve to be a mother."
I fixed my gaze on Zhou Yan. "I'm definitely getting a divorce!"
With a loud bang, I slammed the door shut.
In that instant, I saw tears welling up in Fei Fei's eyes.
My heart ached.
Though Fei Fei didn't say anything, she understood everything.
She knew she didn't have a mother.
She knew her mother didn’t want her anymore.
Even though she didn’t speak, she hoped every day,
hoping that her mother would come to see her, even if just for a moment.
But her mother never did.
Her mother only had her own parents and younger brother in her heart.
Not her.
Not me as her husband.
Not this family.
This marriage must end!
The next day, I filed for divorce in court.
However, during the first hearing, no ruling was made.
The reason was that Zhou Yan had repented.
The court advised us to think carefully. If we still wanted a divorce in six months, we could file again. Hearing this result, I felt somewhat disheartened. That evening, I met my friend Xue An for a couple of drinks. During our time together, I shared my troubles with him.
"This is easy to handle," Xue An said confidently, patting his chest. "Just wait; within a month, I'll make her ask you for the divorce herself."
"Really?" I was skeptical.
"What kind of relationship do we have?" Xue An looked at me. "We're brothers!"
"Do you think I'd lie to you as a brother?"
"Alright then."
I raised my glass. "I'll wait for your news."
Before long, Zhou Yan called me. "I'll be at the civil affairs bureau tomorrow at ten."
"Okay." I nodded.
The next day, we arrived at the civil affairs bureau as promised. Zhou Yan pulled out a divorce agreement and handed it to me. As I took it and glanced over the contents, it clearly stated that the child would stay with me, the savings would be mine, and the car would belong to me as well. However, she stipulated that I was not allowed to touch the shop under her name.
