My deskmate is famously known as the Cold Handsome Guy, but he fights fiercely and never looks anyone in the eye.
I tread carefully around him, afraid of provoking his wrath.
One day, after school, I returned to the classroom, which should have been empty, only to find it filled with the usual troublemakers.
My aloof deskmate sat in the center, looking smug. "What’s there to show off? None of them are as pretty as my Jin Yi."
I stood at the door, too timid to interrupt his bragging because I am Jin Yi.
In the morning, I arrived at the classroom early, hoping to finish my breakfast before my deskmate showed up. Otherwise, when he arrived, I wouldn't even dare to speak loudly, let alone eat.
My deskmate is named Xie Chen. He has good grades, a wealthy background, and a face so handsome it could infuriate gods and men alike.
But he is notoriously cold. After two years of sitting together, he has never really looked at me.
He is truly intimidating. Whenever someone asks me to pass him a love letter, he would stop writing and give me a chilling glare, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the desk as if to say: "Try it if you dare."
He also seems to have obsessive-compulsive tendencies; his desk is tidier than mine as a girl. He gives off an aura like a celestial being, looking down on us mere mortals with disdain.
In short, I hardly dare to speak to him.
Taking advantage of Xie Chen's absence, I quickly peeled my egg.
Just as I took my first bite, someone lightly kicked my chair.
A familiar yet cold voice rang above me: "Move your chair."
I instinctively looked up, half a boiled egg stuffed in my mouth, while Xie Chen stood beside me with his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable.
He was inside, and I was outside, waiting for me to let him in!
Panicking, I hurriedly stood up to let him in, not daring to keep him waiting too long.
But the egg was still lodged in my throat, and I gloriously choked on it.
I pounded my chest in discomfort, and Xie Chen showed no change in expression; he simply raised his hand and discreetly opened his thermos, offering it to me.
Without thinking much, I instinctively took it and drank some water to help swallow the egg. The last thing I wanted was to make the news for choking on an egg.
I heard Xie Chen's voice beside me: "How can you choke on a boiled egg?"
Great, I've been judged. I cautiously looked at him and explained, "I was worried you'd be waiting too long, so I ate a bit too quickly."
Xie Chen frowned slightly, and suddenly it hit me—I had just drunk from Xie Chen's thermos!
Oh no, how did I end up drinking from his cup?
I pressed my lips together, unsure of how to apologize.
Seeing that Xie Chen was still standing there waiting for me to let him in, I quickly stepped aside.
Xie Chen said nothing as he walked in and sat down, while I stood by nervously wiping the thermos over and over again.
"Do you find me repulsive?"
Xie Chen suddenly spoke, startling me.
"No, no, I just wanted to clean it for you," I hurriedly waved my hands. "I really didn't mean to complain."
Xie Chen remained silent, simply looking at me. As expected, my deskmate was still as aloof as ever.
Holding the thermos cup, I found myself at a loss for what to do.
I mustered my courage and handed the thermos to him. "Xie, do you still want it?"
I couldn't tell if it was just my imagination, but Xie Chen's gaze lingered on the opening of the thermos for a few seconds.
His eyes darkened slightly, and after a long pause, he quietly replied, "No need to return it."
With that, he ignored me and began flipping through a thick Physics Book.
I glanced at the cover. Xie was impressive; he was already studying college-level physics while I hadn't even grasped high school physics yet.
"Xie, I'm really sorry about today. Don't worry, I'll buy you a new thermos cup," I said.
Xie Chen didn't even look up; he coldly replied with two words: "No need."
I felt regret gnawing at me from the side. Great, I must have offended this big shot. I've heard he's incredibly tough in a fight.
Last semester, some delinquents cornered him, only to end up getting trapped in an alley and knocked down by Xie Chen's punch.
I was so scared.
For the next week, I spent my days in anxiety, not daring to give away the new thermos I had bought.
However, Xie Chen seemed unfazed by it all; his attitude towards me remained as distant as ever. I managed to get through the week without any issues.
On the weekend, my phone buzzed with a message from my best friend, Xiao Lan.
"Xiao Jinjin, urgent help! Are you free this weekend? Can you go to the school's publicity department and draw a display board for me? I have a fever, please!!!"
I thought for a moment while holding my phone. I was decent at drawing, so I quickly typed back, "Sure, take care of yourself. Leave the display board to me!"
The weather was lovely today, with sunlight that wasn't too harsh. The school was quiet on the weekend, and the wind rustled through the leaves, creating a soothing sound.
I slung my backpack over my shoulder and headed to the classroom. Since it was Saturday, there was no one around, allowing me to focus on sketching my draft in peace.
But as I reached the door, I found the classroom filled with familiar faces—those who were usually hard to manage.
They seemed to be discussing which female celebrities were beautiful. I knew they were all rich kids; they could see those celebrities at home during family banquets.
My aloof deskmate sat in the center of the group, looking smug. "What’s there to brag about? None of them are as pretty as my Jin Yi."
I stood at the doorway, hesitant to interrupt his boasting because I was Jin Yi.
A boy asked him, "Brother Chen, Jin Yi is your deskmate, right?"
Xie Chen lounged back in his chair with an air of nonchalance, a lit cigarette pinched between his fingers. "Yeah, she’s my deskmate—sweet as can be."
At that moment, Xie Chen seemed so different from the Xie Chen I usually saw. If it weren't for that face, I might have thought he was someone else entirely.
Suddenly, a boy locked eyes with me. He flashed a mischievous grin and casually asked Xie Chen, " brother Chen, is that Jin Yi the one who often wears her hair in a bun and carries a cream-colored backpack?"
Xie Chen's expression showed a hint of pride as he replied, "Yes, she looks particularly sweet."
As he spoke, he seemed to remember something and kicked the boy lightly. "How do you know that? I swear, you better not have any ideas about her."
The boy laughed and dodged, pointing toward the door where I was standing.
"Who am I to have feelings for Sister-in-law? But brother Chen, I just saw the legendary Jin Yi," he said with a grin.
Xie Chen shrugged nonchalantly. "What, is she waiting at the door or something?"
The boy's smile widened. "Maybe she is?"
Xie Chen's body stiffened at that. He silently extinguished his cigarette and slowly uncrossed his legs before turning around.
I didn't have time to hide, and our eyes met.
For a moment, the classroom fell into an eerie silence.
