Recently, the school announced the upcoming Mathematics Competition, and the top performer would represent the school in the provincial competition. Achieving a good result would add an impressive highlight to one's resume.
Xie Chen did not participate in this exam because he was busy with other competitions, while I quietly took the test and ended up ranking first.
When everyone learned that an unknown like me would represent the school, they were skeptical.
They all said that my success was merely a stroke of luck, and that it would be embarrassing to compete; it would be better to give the opportunity to someone from Class One to bring glory to the school.
The negative voices were so overwhelming that I began to doubt myself too; perhaps it really was just luck. But what about all those late nights I spent studying?
"Smack."
A pile of books landed on my desk, placed there by Xie Chen. He leaned down, his large hand gripping the back of my head as he locked eyes with me. His breath tangled in my hair. "Are you scared?"
I looked at him, and to my surprise, my voice carried a hint of grievance. "Yeah, they all say I'm not good enough."
Xie Chen smirked, his tone mischievous yet reassuring. "Don’t worry; it’s just a silly exam. If you don’t understand something, I’ll teach you. Go get that first place and show them what you’re made of."
He spoke so casually, as if success was guaranteed.
After a moment, I met his gaze and nodded firmly. "Okay!"
So, I did what I did best: I studied hard.
And Xie Chen became my personal tutor.
In the meantime, to relieve student stress, the school organized a basketball competition.
Xie Chen represented our class on the court.
His face could drive countless girls crazy, so there were many people cheering for him. Xie Chen was used to being aloof, and this was the only chance he had to receive cheers openly.
I stood in the crowd, holding a bottle of water, watching him obediently.
When Xie Chen's gaze swept over me, his usually cold and distant demeanor transformed into a playful smile, like a peacock displaying its feathers.
The girls went even wilder.
As soon as the match began, Xie Chen launched a fierce attack, and the opposing team struggled to keep up.
I couldn't help but admire how versatile Xie Chen truly was.
Halfway through the match, it was time for a break.
Many people came to offer Xie Chen water, but he turned them all down.
I stood on the sidelines, busy opening my bottle as I walked towards him. However, before I could get close, one of the players from his team took it from me.
Breathing heavily, he looked like he was about to collapse. "Thanks, classmate. Your water is just what I needed."
I wanted to explain that it wasn't meant for him, but seeing Xie Chen in such poor condition made me decide to let it go.
Just as I looked up, I met Xie Chen's resentful gaze. Before I could clarify anything to him, the match resumed.
In the second half of the game, Xie Chen played fiercely and aggressively, intercepting almost every ball and giving the opposing team no chance at all. He dominated the game completely.
Anyone could feel the anger radiating from him.
Not only were the opponents surprised, but even the teammates were taken aback.
"What happened to Xie Chen? Why is he playing like this all of a sudden? Is he going all out?"
Another teammate wiped his sweat and said, "Who knows? Xie Chen has always been aloof. Who can tell what he's thinking? He doesn't like to talk, and we don't dare to ask."
In the final second, Xie Chen ended the game with a three-pointer, leaving no room for doubt.
Once the game was over and the crowd dispersed, I walked over to Xie Chen.
He was wearing jersey number 3, and at that moment, it seemed like even the wind favored him a little more.
"Xie Chen."
Xie Chen had his hands in his pockets and spoke with a hint of annoyance, "What do you want? You little ungrateful one, bringing water for others but not for me."
"Xie, bend down."
"Just because you tell me to bend down, I will?"
I smiled at him, my eyes sparkling. "You can bend down."
Xie Chen muttered under his breath, "Damn it, don’t look at me like that," but he obediently bent down.
"I really have lost to you."
I took out a tissue and wiped away the thin layer of sweat on his forehead. Leaning closer to his ear, I earnestly said, "Xie, you were amazing today. That last three-pointer was beautiful. You truly are my desk mate!"
My eyes sparkled as Xie Chen hurriedly straightened up, a flush creeping to his ears.
Fearing he might feel embarrassed, I was about to leave when Xie Chen grabbed the corner of my shirt.
His tone was awkward: "If you can talk, you might as well say a bit more."
I noticed that as the day of the provincial math competition approached, more and more people began to make snide remarks about me.
In their eyes, I was far too ordinary to represent the entire school at the math competition. They believed I simply couldn't do it.
The day before the competition was a Monday.
During the national flag ceremony, Xie Chen stood on stage as the top student in our grade, his features deep and striking.
The once noisy playground fell silent in an instant; everyone was astonished that someone who usually refused to speak suddenly agreed to take the stage.
Xie Chen was known for his aloofness, and now that he was finally willing to address everyone, all eyes were glued to him, including the principal's, filled with appreciation and anticipation.
As focus slowly sharpened, Xie Chen tapped the microphone with his finger: "Since everyone is here today, I’ll say a few words."
"I once read a quote by Eileen Chang: 'Outside, the wind and rain are dazzling; today is everywhere.' So Jin Yi..."
Xie Chen paused for a few seconds. Standing in the crowd, I suddenly heard my name and my heart skipped several beats.
Our gazes collided as I stood among the crowd, looking up at Xie Chen on stage.
A slight smile played on his lips, confidence radiating from his eyes: "No matter what others say about you, just stick to what you believe is right. Do what you want to do; life is short but can hold many fleeting moments. I hope you can give your all in this vibrant age without leaving any regrets. And as for me, everyone says I'm arrogant, right? But I will always bow down for you."
As Xie Chen scanned the crowd, his tone was calm as he said, "I sincerely apologize for taking up everyone's time. There's nothing else; I just wanted to cheer for my deskmate. If others don't believe in you, I do. Jin Yi, don't be nervous about the competition. You've worked hard enough, and I've taught you everything you need to know."
With that, Xie Chen put down the microphone and walked off with one hand in his pocket, leaving a room full of astonished teachers.
For a moment, there was silence before someone shouted, "Wow, brother Chen is amazing! So damn cool!"
All the students suddenly reacted, and whistles erupted throughout the hall.
"Did that big shot just confess?"
"Ah!!! I can't believe how cool that was! Is this really the same Xie Chen who’s as cold as ice? Publicly talking about love in front of the principal?"
"Is Jin Yi the one participating in the Mathematics Competition? She must be pretty impressive if he thinks so highly of her! As an audience member, I feel honored! Oh my God, I thought this would be a serious speech where I'd learn a lot of valuable knowledge! But of course, he doesn't play by the rules."
"I knew there had to be a reason Xie Chen suddenly agreed to speak under the national flag; turns out he's a warrior charging for love! Suddenly, I feel like he's come down to earth!"
I stood among my classmates, stunned and clutching my chest. My heart raced so fast it felt like it might leap out.
All around me were the sounds of my classmates cheering, but it felt like I could only hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
It's over; I might have fallen in love.
Oh heavens, I've really fallen for Xie Chen.
