I often feel that there is a reason behind my signs of schizophrenia.
On one hand, I despise those criminals. I hate the harm they bring to society, and I loathe how they never consider others, not even their own loved ones, when committing their crimes. On the other hand, I sympathize with many offenders. I know that many people are driven to crime, and that many do not wish to act this way.
So I hate them, yet I love them.
It feels like hell, yet also like a hall of judgment.
I cannot be like Captain Shao, who possesses a steadfast heart, knowing exactly what he wants to do without worrying about these matters. But I also cannot be like Zhao Mingkun, who has chosen darkness and walks as a figure within it.
I am just an ordinary person, conflicted and sensitive.
"Do you like watching the stars?" I asked.
Zhao Mingkun responded with surprise, "How did you know I like watching the stars?"
I had no words; that one sentence was enough.
"I have a method, but the success rate is rather low," I said as I sat up slowly. "And if we fail and someone sees it in the future, it will be quite embarrassing for us. But if we don’t try, we only have two possible outcomes."
I raised one finger: "First, we could die here."
Then I raised another: "Second, we could be caught by the police."
Zhao Mingkun chuckled, "In that case, you might as well give it a try."
It was a risky and embarrassing method, but based on the timing, Guan Zengbin should have already brought Gu Chen and others here. Wang Er Gou should also be among them; if anyone in this world could save us, it would definitely be Wang Er Gou.
During my time in the mental hospital, I witnessed Wang Er Gou find a patient hidden in Drain Three using just one shoe. Wang Er Gou has an incredible sense of smell; perhaps his instinctual recognition of our kind has led to subtle changes within him. More importantly, Wang Er Gou is a dog with grave robbing skills.
His understanding of tombs surpasses that of any of us.
The plan was to defecate in this narrow space, using the smell to attract Wang Er Gou. It was undoubtedly a bold and imaginative scheme, and by the time I learned it, I had long forgotten what shame felt like.
So we executed the plan and used that Sack to fling the mess onto the floor above.
Silence.
Silence was the Big Qiao Qiao's grandmother's bridge tonight.
Zhao Mingkun, trying to break the awkwardness, said, "I just saw a birthmark on the back of your thigh."
I felt even more embarrassed than before.
I smiled lightly and replied, "My father is also a murderer; I grew up in prison. You know how the inmates there react when they see my birthmark? They all think I'm lucky. If I ever get killed, even if my head is chopped off, as long as the birthmark is there, I won't be mistaken."
Tears suddenly streamed down Zhao Mingkun's face, catching me off guard. I didn't know why she was crying—was it because of what I said or because she saw my birthmark?
"Are you okay?" I asked.
Zhao Mingkun looked at me, her expression complex. "If we can get out of here, please don't become a Grave Robber. The things in this bag are enough for you for the rest of your life. It would be better to live as an ordinary person. You haven't killed anyone; you still have a chance to start over. Take care of your girlfriend, okay?"
I didn't understand her words. Zhao Mingkun seemed to have a completely different attitude towards me compared to others. She was usually cold with everyone else but showed a different kind of warmth when she was with me.
And I wasn't a Grave Robber; I was supposed to capture her.
I had no words.
Waiting—there was nothing else to do but wait.
I don't know how long it passed, but suddenly I heard something moving on top of the Iron Plate. The sound was faint but stood out clearly in the silent environment.
"Who's up there! Pull out the bolt!" I hurriedly shouted as I stood up.
The Iron Plate was opened, and as I shone my flashlight, Wang Er Gou's large face appeared in the light. I had never felt that Wang Er Gou looked so handsome; I almost wanted to hug him and kiss him fiercely.
"Master?" Wang Er Gou called out.
"Come on, step on my shoulders to get up," I said to Zhao Mingkun.
Zhao Mingkun shook her head and replied, "If I go up, how will you get up? Let me help you up first."
Indeed, although it was only three meters high, I had no idea how to climb up. I stood on Zhao Mingkun's shoulders as she slowly rose. Wang Er Gou above helped pull me up.
Looking back at Zhao Mingkun, I saw her tuck the flashlight into her pants pocket and take a few steps back. Then she took a running start, kicked off the wall, and used the momentum to propel herself upward. In no time, her hands were gripping the edge of the opening. Before Wang Er Gou and I could pull her, she had already flipped herself over.
Her movements were fluid and impressive.
But since Wang Er Gou had arrived, it was clear that Guan Zengbin and the police were not far behind. It wouldn't be long before they would come searching for Wang Er Gou. If we stayed here any longer, Zhao Mingkun might not be able to leave. Thinking of this, I said, "We need to get out of here quickly."
Zhao Mingkun frowned but didn’t say anything as she followed me outside.
At a fork in the path, a beam of light illuminated the wall; it seemed that someone with a flashlight would soon emerge from that direction.
"We should split up," I told Zhao Mingkun. "The only people who can come now are the police. If any of us can escape, it's better than none."
Zhao Mingkun patted my shoulder and said, "You must be careful."
A sudden pang of sadness washed over me: "Will we see each other again?"
"We will."
Zhao Mingkun kissed my forehead and then disappeared down one of the side paths.
Helping others all the way through; delivering Buddha to the West. I led Wang Er Gou into another passageway. With Wang Er Gou by my side, I wasn't worried about getting lost here.
All I could do for her was this. If she still fell into our hands, it could only be blamed on her bad luck. I saw so much of myself in her; it was as if I were looking at another version of myself. With a police obsession like Zhao Mingkun's, how bad could she really be?
It would be best if we never met again.
"What the hell!" Captain Shao slammed his hand on the office desk, making a loud noise. I had never seen Captain Shao this angry; it seemed like he might break the desk: "How could you let her get away? Didn't I tell you to keep a close watch on her? Why is she still missing?"
I lowered my head, feeling like a wronged wife: "She was too cunning. After Ergou rescued us from the Cellar, I breathed a sigh of relief. But before I knew it, she had vanished down a side path. By the time Ergou and I chased after her, she was gone. This is all my fault; punish me as you see fit..."
Captain Shao stared at me for a long time before asking, "Ergou, is that true?"
"That's right!" Ergou nodded.
What a loyal dog he was. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be long before Ergou had to return to the mental hospital. I felt reluctant to part with him because many people lacked Ergou's qualities. Otherwise, why would Cui have never abandoned him? Even though Dr. Ergou had little hope of recovery.
The more people I met, the more I liked dogs.
Mary chimed in, "I don't think we should blame Wu too much. After all, Zhao Mingkun has escaped from us multiple times. Seven years have passed; what's one more time? Since she has appeared again, we will probably encounter her once more."
Would we really meet her again? If there were a next time, what choice would I make?
Shaking my head, I decided to leave the next time's issues for another day.
Captain Shao sighed and raised the tea mug again: "Well, there's nothing more to be done now; we've already scolded you. Now let's praise you for thinking of using that to escape; it's quite impressive."
Sometimes, to stay alive, one must set aside their pride.
"By the way!" Guan Zengbin interjected: "What exactly happened in the Tomb? There were corpses everywhere."
I then recounted what had happened in the Tomb.
"By the way, where is Gu Chen?" I asked.
Guan Zengbin replied, "When we were there, a person in red ran out from the Tomb. We were too far away to see who it was. Gu Chen immediately chased after that person, but it looked like the female ghost we saw in the courtyard that night."
I nodded and said, "I already know the truth. The person in red is Lin Daiyu, and everything is connected to her. This time, taking advantage of Old Six's desire for revenge, Daiyu devised a plan to have them turn against each other and conceal the truth from that year. If it weren't for Ergou, no one would know her secret anymore."
"Daiyu?" Guan Zengbin asked.
"That's right!" I turned to Mary and said, "Mary, can you look into the identities of Lin Daiyu's parents and Chu Mei's parents? Although I know Daiyu was the one who killed them, I still don't understand why Lin Daiyu committed murder. Also, what is Chu Mei's relationship with Master Chu? These remain a mystery."
Mary made a 'K' gesture and began searching on her computer.
Gu Chen returned empty-handed but was still happy to see that I was fine. "Oh, I thought you were done for."
I chuckled lightly and said, "It's just because I didn't bring you along this time. You should know that if you were here, it would have been exposed right away. Luckily you weren't; just look at those calluses on your hands—they're not suited for undercover work. A knowledgeable person could spot them at a glance."
Gu Chen looked at his calloused palms and fingers and said, "That's true."
Sighing, he added, "I was too far from that person and lost track of them."
I lightly tapped on the Temple with my finger and said, "Come on, I'll take you to catch someone."
