Time flowed by, and before one knew it, the scorching summer had passed, making way for autumn. The leaves on the trees began to slowly turn yellow and fall, seemingly declaring the arrival of autumn. Over a month had gone by, and Dongxing City was quiet; there had been no murders, and this large city had returned to a rare state of tranquility.
According to internal statistics from the Public Security Bureau, summer was the season with the highest frequency of murders, while other seasons saw fewer incidents. Perhaps the heat of summer made people more irritable, leading to more violent outbursts. The other seasons were relatively peaceful, allowing us to enjoy such a long holiday.
At that moment, Gu Chen and I were sitting in the office, munching on edamame while playing games.
Liu pushed open the office door and walked in. Upon seeing us, he exclaimed, "What the hell? You guys are still eating edamame? Have you forgotten how Zhou Guo's mother died?"
"Wasn't she boiled to death by soybeans?" Gu Chen replied while cracking open another edamame pod. "What does that have to do with edamame?"
Liu waved his hand dismissively. "You can tell you're not from the countryside. Don't you know? Fully matured and dried edamame is just soybeans!"
"What?" Gu Chen seemed to have his worldview shattered. "I've always liked eating edamame but not soybeans. So one is a young girl and the other is a mature woman?"
Gu Chen's analogy was sharp, and I chimed in, "Sounds like you prefer younger ones—so shallow. I prefer someone a bit older than me... But anyway, did you come here just to tell us this? You're the one with a proper job; shouldn't you be working?"
Liu grabbed all the edamame from our bowl and stuffed some into his mouth while saying, "Well, your mission is coming up again. This time there's a rich reward!"
"What is it about?" Seeing Liu's eager expression piqued my curiosity.
Liu tossed the empty pods into the trash can. "Come on, Captain Shao will explain everything to you."
Standing outside the conference room door, I looked through the glass inside. It was my first time seeing so many leaders from the City Bureau gathered together; in just a short while, I had seen more leaders than I had in my entire life up until now. It seemed this was going to be an important case. After Captain Shao spoke for a while, these leaders began to leave the conference room one after another. Soon enough, only Captain Shao, Mary, and Guan Zengbin remained inside.
We pushed open the door and entered the conference room to find Captain Shao facing away from us, looking at a whiteboard filled with dense images and information. He had both hands clasped behind his back and was tapping his right hand's back with his left index finger.
I walked over and saw that in the center of the whiteboard was a photo of an old man. Next to it was a picture of a beautiful girl around seventeen or eighteen years old.
Noticing our entrance, Captain Shao didn't turn around but pointed at the old man's photo and asked, "Do you know who this person is?"
The old man in the photo was dressed in a deep blue suit, which, although lacking a brand label, was undoubtedly expensive. A neaLI tie hung around his neck, giving off an air of sophistication. His square face was adorned with a well-groomed beard, and his brows hinted at an imposing presence; he clearly was not an ordinary person.
Liu spoke up, "This man seems to be the chairman of Rongding Group."
Captain Shao nodded and replied, "That's right. Liu Yinyan, sixty-seven years old, chairman of Rongding Group. He started with nothing in Dongxing City and, within just a few decades, founded one of the top venture capital firms in Dongxing City with several partners. His net worth is now in the tens of billions, yet he has only one eighteen-year-old daughter."
Liu exclaimed in surprise, "So he had a child at fifty? That certainly qualifies as having a late child. His daughter looks quite beautiful; I wonder who will end up with that lucky girl."
Mary chimed in, "Of course she's beautiful; her wife is a Russian star. She was under thirty when she had their child, and being mixed-race, her daughter is bound to be stunning."
I took a closer look and indeed saw that Liu Yinyan's daughter had an elegant figure and striking features; she was very pretty.
Liu interjected slyly, "Mary is also half French; if she were younger, I think she'd be much prettier than her."
Mary retorted, "You have quite the sweet tongue! What are you trying to do? I warn you, my dad may be rich, but I'm broke. If you need to borrow money, forget it! Just buy your lottery tickets; who knows, you might win four or five hundred million and become a life winner."
Captain Shao cleared his throat a few times, prompting Mary to quickly say, "Ahem, back to business. About an hour ago, Liu Yinyan's daughter Liu Fei'er mysteriously disappeared from her room. We currently have no way to contact her and suspect she may have been kidnapped. However, we haven't received any calls from the kidnappers yet, so our mission is to find out where Liu Fei'er is right now."
Gu Chen shrugged and said, "Is it really such a big deal for this? She’s been missing for just about an hour; maybe her phone died. You know how eighteen or nineteen-year-old girls love to play around."
Guan Zengbin coughed and replied, "Who says all eighteen or nineteen-year-old girls just play around? When have you ever seen me go out to have fun?"
I tugged at my hair while looking at the densely packed photos and information on the whiteboard and asked Captain Shao, "Do you think there's something fishy about this? Is it really a kidnapping?"
Captain Shao stroked his chin thoughtfully and nodded slowly. "I think so. Liu Yinyan had this daughter late in life; he treats her like a precious gem and probably has eight bodyguards watching over her. But now Old Man Liu has personally come to report this incident; I believe she must have been kidnapped."
"How can he be so sure?" I asked with some confusion.
Captain Shao smiled and said, "You are still young, so you may not have heard the story of Liu Yinyan. When Liu Yinyan was young, he was definitely a tough character. If he weren't, he probably wouldn't have become the chairman of Rongding Group. Most of the things he set his mind to would come to fruition; otherwise, how could he have become one of the top venture capitalists?"
"What do you mean?" we all asked in unison.
Then Captain Shao began to recount the story of Liu Yinyan's youth.
Liu Yinyan was not a local of Dongxing City. Like most young people, he came from a village that couldn't even be found on a map to this intimidating metropolis. And like the vast majority of young people, when Liu Yinyan arrived in Dongxing City as a teenager, he knew nothing.
If nothing unexpected had happened, Liu Yinyan's life trajectory would have followed the same path as most: finding a labor-intensive job in Dongxing City, slowly learning some skills, marrying around twenty-seven or twenty-eight, and then living together with his wife in a rented room while working until they had their own children.
In Dongxing City, perhaps they would never be able to buy a house of their own.
But Liu Yinyan was an ambitious person; he was not willing to let his life pass by like that. He came to the big city, served plates, worked as a construction worker on job sites, frequented the lowest places, and met the wealthiest people. One day, while eating beside a construction site, he saw a luxury car pull up and a young man about his age step out.
The young man looked at him with disdain.
From that moment on, Liu Yinyan made a silent vow to himself: he would become someone important, one of the top figures in Dongxing City. He understood deeply that if he did not learn, he would never achieve anything. Liu Yinyan had never heard of anyone becoming a billionaire solely through hard labor.
This era needed talent—people who could create wealth with their minds.
During those days, Liu Yinyan started from scratch and self-studied an extensive array of economics and finance. He invested all his money in himself and felt gratified because he could freely attend any classroom at a university without looking out of place among his peers.
He worked harder than anyone else, sleeping only three hours each night.
Those who are tough on themselves are either madmen or geniuses.
By the age of thirty, he finally earned dual degrees in economics and finance. At thirty-five, he joined one of the top venture capital firms in Dongxing City and started from the most basic tasks. His colleagues mocked him because he was generally ten years older than them.
At the age of thirty-six, several executives from a company decided to start their own venture.
Liu Yinyan hoped to join this team, but the executives looked at him with disdain. Liu Yinyan had no capital and was considered too old; this industry needed young and vibrant individuals, not someone like him who was too cautious to take risks.
Thus, Liu Yinyan reluctantly settled for joining another team, one not composed of executives but rather a group of enthusiastic young people who had just entered the industry. Anyone with a bit of experience understood that such a team was merely cannon fodder for the vast capital market.
Yet, Liu Yinyan resolutely decided to join this team. However, every team needs financial backing at the outset. Liu Yinyan had no funds; he had only worked for a year. Without capital, he could not become a partner.
It was a scorching summer when the members of the team noticed that Liu Yinyan had his left side wrapped in bandages.
They all inquired if something had happened to him.
Liu Yinyan smiled lightly and replied, "I haven't earned much after working for a year. A few days ago, I sold one of my kidneys on the left side; now I have enough money to join."
Everyone was stunned, and those in the industry heard about it—Liu Yinyan had sold one of his kidneys to become a partner.
Decades ago, Liu Yinyan was the subject of ridicule, someone everyone laughed at. Yet decades later, a single statement from him could stir great waves in this circle. Those executives who once rejected Liu Yinyan now regretted their decision, while those who accepted him as a partner were now able to sit at home and earn substantial incomes each month.
As Liu Yinyan severed that kidney, perhaps he had already foreseen what would come to pass.
High risk brings high rewards; those willing to wager their own bodies may be destined to become top venture capitalists.
