When his daughter was mentioned, Lin Da's expression became notably serious. During his time in prison, that thug had involved Lin Da's daughter in an argument, and after enduring for a year, Lin Da ultimately killed the man. To Lin Da, his daughter was his entire world.
"My daughter," Lin Da closed his eyes, his eyelids rolling as if his eyes were darting around inside. "My daughter’s life has been ruined by someone. I wanted to ruin his life in return, but unfortunately, he died too quickly. When I slaughter chickens and cows at home, I stab them in the neck, and they can still live for quite a while."
As he shook his head, Lin Da continued, "Once we had guests over, and I killed a chicken for them. Who would have thought that after its head was chopped off, it ran out of the yard? By the time I caught up with it, it was almost outside the village. Why is it that the life of a beast is so resilient while a human's life is so fragile?"
He opened his eyes. "At first, I didn't intend to kill that scum; I only wanted to cut off his testicles so he could never harm another girl again. But later I learned that AIDS can be transmitted through blood. Knowledge is power; if I had known earlier, I would have drained all his blood."
Lin Da recounted events from four years ago as if he might never have another chance to do so.
"I'm not asking about that!" Captain Shao interrupted Lin Da's reminiscing. "You kidnapped an eighteen or nineteen-year-old girl, yet you never thought about how your own daughter is precious to you? Why is someone else's daughter just a piece of grass to you?"
"Tell me, where is Liu Fei'er now? Who else is involved?" Captain Shao pressed on.
Lin Da did not answer but continued, "I only care about my daughter; what does it matter to me about someone else's daughter? I'm not her father! Honestly speaking, if her father came to kill me, that would be quite normal. But do you know what he’s doing now? Where he is?"
Upon hearing this, the four of us stared at Lin Da simultaneously; it seemed he had more to say.
Captain Shao suddenly stood up and pointed at Lin Da. "Lin Da! What are you really trying to do?"
As he spoke, Captain Shao gestured to someone outside the one-way glass to check on Liu Yinyan.
Lin Da smiled slightly. "I don’t know what they plan to do; maybe they just want to have some fun. After becoming a fugitive, I realized there are many interesting souls in this world. The old me was quite ignorant; later I discovered that excitement can become a person's faith and life!"
"Don't you want to see your daughter before you die?" Captain Shao's tone carried a hint of threat.
"My daughter?" Lin Da sneered; the sound came out through clenched teeth. "Do you think I haven't seen her? Now let me ask you: Is my daughter in police custody? I've been in prison; I know your methods. You won't get anything out of me!"
"A good show is just beginning; just wait and see! That girl named Liu Fei'er, right? Have you seen her fingers?" Lin Da's eyes glinted with malice.
"Damn it!" Gu Chen could no longer hold back; he stepped forward and stood before Lin Da. Without hesitation, Gu Chen punched Lin Da squarely in the stomach. "Tell me where Liu Fei'er is! Who else is involved with the kidnappers? What are you planning?"
The punch landed solidly on Lin Da's abdomen, and I saw his features contort in pain. Yet amidst that distortion, Lin Da continued to smile. "Go ahead; why don't you kill me? I've been dead for three years already—living these three years was just for doing what I wanted. I have no regrets."
Another punch landed on Lin Da's stomach.
Lin Da opened his mouth and dry heaved, "Hit me, keep hitting me! Come on, kill me, just kill me!"
Faced with such a dispassionate and unyielding criminal, there was no way anyone could extract any information from him. Gu Chen was about to strike again when Captain Shao intervened, "Gu Chen, stop."
Gu Chen glanced at Lin Da and halted his actions.
"Let him be alone for a while," Captain Shao said as he led the way out.
One by one, we exited the interrogation room, but Lin Da shouted from inside, "Come on! Why aren’t you asking me anymore? Come ask me! Come kill me! You won’t find anything! Do you have even a tiny clue? What are you all doing? Someone come!"
I looked through the one-way glass and saw Lin Da, handcuffed and struggling. His face was flushed red, hunched over like a roasted shrimp. He screamed hoarsely, his voice sounding like a tattered piece of cloth flapping in the wind—dry and grating.
Liu called in, and Captain Shao put it on speaker.
"This is bad! Really bad!" Liu's voice was frantic. "I just went to the bathroom for a moment, and when I came out, Liu Yinyan was gone! Not only Liu Yinyan is missing, but also her butler. I asked the servants at home, and they said both of them went to the police station."
"That’s nonsense!" Liu Dao exclaimed. "This morning, Liu Yinyan demanded that all officers withdraw. How could they have gone to the police station? I asked several people, and they all said the same thing—they received a call from the police and then left!"
"Damn it!" Captain Shao, usually calm and composed, cursed loudly. "It seems Lin Da's arrival is not just a coincidence. Did the kidnappers deliberately send Lin Da here? But for what reason? Why did the police just cut off surveillance on Liu Yinyan's house, only for a call to come in right after?"
Lin Da appeared utterly frantic in the interrogation room. However, he didn’t need to act this way. Moreover, from Lin Da's words, we could gather many useful clues. He casually mentioned that we should see what Liu Yinyan was up to.
It became clear that before Lin Da came in, he had already learned about the kidnappers' next move. But since Lin Da had been caught by Gu Chen while trying to buy tobacco leaves, how could the kidnappers have anticipated that Gu Chen would be lying in wait at the Tobacco Shop?
Suddenly, a chilling thought crossed my mind.
"Mary, immediately check the surrounding surveillance to see where Liu Yinyan went," Captain Shao quickly ordered. "Liu, take a team to investigate if anyone nearby saw Liu Yinyan."
"Understood," both responded simultaneously.
Just after hanging up the phone with Liu, another call came in on Captain Shao's mobile.
Captain Shao answered, "This is Shao Shilin. Who is this? Speak quickly."
"Captain Shao!" The voice on the other end said, "This is Captain Wang from the Municipal Public Security Bureau of Luo Bei. As per your request, we found Lin Rong's home, but after several visits, we still haven't seen her. We then spoke to her neighbors and finally learned about Lin Rong's situation from her close friend. It turns out Lin Rong has long since left Luo Bei City."
Captain Shao furrowed his brow and asked, "Not in Luo Bei City anymore? Do you know where she went?"
The person on the other end seemed oblivious to Captain Shao's serious tone and chuckled, "It's quite interesting. Her friend told the police that Lin Rong was supposed to go to Dongxing City over a month ago. By now, she has likely been in Dongxing City for about a month. Isn't that intriguing?"
"You’re saying the person you’re looking for is actually in your city? By the way, I—"
Before Captain Wang could finish, Captain Shao hung up the phone.
He remained silent for a moment before saying, "Lin Da has likely seen his daughter, and now Lin Da's daughter may also be in the hands of the kidnappers. Although he might seem to treat Lin Rong well on the surface, Lin Da knows that if he does anything detrimental to them, Lin Rong will be in danger."
"What do we do now?" Gu Chen asked anxiously. "Liu Fei'er hasn't been rescued, and Liu Yinyan is missing. Where do we even start looking?"
Upon hearing Gu Chen's words, everyone fell silent.
At this moment, I spoke up, "We have a traitor among us!"
"A traitor?" Everyone turned to look at me.
I addressed Guan Zengbin, "Do you remember the business card Jesse gave us? Do you still have it?"
I recalled that Jesse had given me a business card which I had directly stuffed into Guan Zengbin's jacket pocket.
Guan Zengbin snapped his fingers and said, "Yes! I took off my dirty clothes and haven't had a chance to wash them yet! The card should still be in my pocket!"
Before long, Guan Zengbin brought out a business card.
Jesse Detective Agency is located in Nara City, Japan.
Below is a string of phone numbers.
“Go verify if there really is a Detective Agency in Nara City! Get Mary to help!” I said to Guan Zengbin.
Guan Zengbin nodded and immediately went to take care of it.
I continued, “Every time we uncover a clue, it seems to get interrupted. This has happened more than once; the security guard was like this, Chen Lin was like this, and even the few calls we received today were like this. The kidnappers are too clever and too bold. Just like today, Lin Da was clearly sent in by the kidnappers.”
“They took Lin Da’s daughter away beforehand; they knew Gu Chen was lying in wait at the Tobacco Shop!” I tugged at my hair, recalling the details. “If we can rule out the suspicion of internal police members, then the only ones who know our movements are Jesse and their team.”
“A month ago, that car Lin Da had driven, which had traces of tobacco inside, was parked in the parking lot.” I remembered the situation: “Not long ago, we and Jesse almost simultaneously discovered this clue, but in reality, Jesse had previously alerted Liu about it.”
I felt everything in my mind becoming clear: “When we found the underground parking lot, Jesse also found it. At that time, Jesse wanted to compete with us to see who could find that car first, but in fact, he was deliberately trying to remind us.”
“If it weren’t for Wang Er Gou being present, we might not have discovered the clue at the Tobacco Shop, and naturally wouldn’t have been able to trace it back to Lin Da. In fact, if Wang Er Gou hadn’t been there, Jesse would have definitely found the tobacco traces and then informed us.”
“Because! That was his design all along!”
I suddenly realized.
“I found out.” Guan Zengbin shouted from a distance: “There really is a Jesse Detective Agency in Nara, but Jesse hasn’t come to China at all!”
