Wu Zui leaned forward, as if he was about to take flight.
Liu Yinyan and Liu Fei'er pulled the Towel Blanket from their mouths, finally able to speak freely. Wu Zui moved a table and a chair closer. He sat down on the chair and placed a gun on the table. I stood beside him, pressed down by Scarface, seemingly forced to participate in this game.
Having nearly died earlier, my body was still weak and frail. I wanted to fight back, but Scarface's hands were like iron clamps, tightly gripping my wrists behind my back, leaving me unable to move at all. If I were Gu Chen, perhaps I would have had some hope.
"What do you want!" Liu Yinyan shouted. "We've already brought the money; what more do you want? If ten million isn't enough, how much do you need? I can give you anything. I just beg you to let my daughter go. We didn't call the police; they came on their own."
One of Wu Zui's hands rested on Liu Yinyan's head, stroking it repeatedly, while the other hand extended a finger to his lips, as if soothing a small child. "Shh, quiet now, don't shout. Be good. I know the police aren't your doing; I believe you. Look how obedient and lovely your daughter is."
Liu Fei'er’s eyes were filled with fear; her body trembled slightly, her face pale as wax.
At that moment, Wu Zui leaned in closer to Liu Fei'er’s face, seemingly savoring her scent.
Liu Yinyan's expression was grave as he watched his daughter being so closely approached by this pervert, unsure of what a father should feel in such a situation.
After a long pause, Wu Zui leaned back and said, "Ahem, my apologies for that lapse in decorum. Now then, let’s play an interesting game. The name of this game is 'I have many secrets that I won’t tell you.' Just hearing that name makes it sound fun, doesn’t it?"
"What do you want? Just come at me; please don’t do anything to my daughter!" Liu Yinyan pleaded desperately. "Even if it means my death, I wouldn’t care!"
"Dad!" Liu Fei'er cried out once before bursting into tears.
The two of them immediately fell into a chorus of cries.
With a loud bang, a gunshot rang out.
Wu Zui fired a shot into the distance, instantly silencing both of them. "If there's one more word from either of you, there will be another hole in your heads. Understand?"
The two nodded.
Wu Zui seemed quite satisfied with the effect and continued, "That's good. Now, the game has begun. The rules are simple: I ask questions, and you answer them. If you dare to hide anything, I will shoot. Don't try to deceive me; no one in this world can fool me."
"Alright, the first question, Liu Yinyan." Wu Zui casually pointed the gun at Liu Yinyan, moving it back and forth. "Thirty-five years ago, did you plan the robbery of the Gold Shop?"
Liu Yinyan glanced at his daughter, paused for a moment, and finally said, "Yes, I planned it."
"Very good." Wu Zui aimed the gun at Liu Fei'er. "Now it's your turn. Are you still a *****?"
Everyone's eyes were fixed on Liu Fei'er, especially Liu Yinyan, who seemed particularly concerned about this question.
Liu Fei'er lowered her head and softly replied, "No, I'm not."
"Not bad. It seems you all are quite honest." Wu Zui appeared very pleased. "These were just warm-up questions; however, the next ones will be much more interesting. Those who lie will only meet their doom; I hope you understand that. Now, Mr. Liu Yinyan, do you know that the person you caused to die had a daughter suffering from Uremia?"
This statement struck at the dusty past from thirty-five years ago, seemingly aiming to shatter a father's dignity right before Liu Fei'er’s eyes. It was meant to show her how many dirty deeds were hidden beneath her father's neatly tailored exterior.
Liu Yinyan looked at Liu Fei'er, tears streaming down his face. His lips quivered slightly, but he ultimately said, "Yes, I know he had a daughter with Uremia."
"Next is you, Liu Fei'er." Wu Zui asked, "Did you give your first time to your boyfriend? Don’t lie now."
Liu Fei'er’s expression suddenly shifted from fear to shock as she stared blankly at Wu Zui. Seeing this expression made it clear that Wu Zui must have grasped many unknown secrets about these two; otherwise, he wouldn't be so confident. And as for Liu Fei'er, she was likely not just the innocent and lovely nineteen-year-old girl we saw on the surface.
"No, no." Liu Fei'er struggled to utter those two words.
Liu Yinyan looked at Liu Fei'er with a complex expression—shocked yet ashamed. "Fei'er, what has your father taught you? Why could you do something like this?"
Wu Zui shook his head and said, "No, no, no, this is not the time for your questions. I ask you, since you know he has a daughter suffering from Uremia, don’t you feel ashamed for doing this?"
"But even if I don’t do this, his daughter will still die," Liu Yinyan did not answer directly but defended himself, "She is already in the late stage of Uremia! There’s no saving her! Even with money, it’s impossible to save his daughter! What I’m doing doesn’t change the fact that she will die. If he doesn’t want to live anymore, why can’t you just let me have my way?"
"I’m not asking you that question," Wu Zui shook his head. "I’m asking you if you feel guilty."
Liu Yinyan deflated like a balloon losing air.
"I... I feel guilty," Liu Yinyan replied. "I feel guilty. For thirty-five years, I often dream about this. I think of that body being pulled from the water, and how she never got to see her father before she died. That’s why I founded a foundation to treat Uremia patients; I’ve saved many people!"
"Mm." Wu Zui waved his hand, signaling Liu Yinyan to stop talking. "Then Liu Fei'er, when did you lose your virginity?"
Liu Fei'er lowered her head, unable to look her father in the eye. She might have thought about lying, but seeing Wu Zui's masked face, she said, "The first time was when I was sixteen. I went out to play and met a man..."
Upon hearing Liu Fei'er’s words, Liu Yinyan trembled all over; he seemed unable to believe his ears. "What? What? Sixteen? Who was that person? Why didn’t you tell Dad? You must catch him! Catch him! People like that should be put in jail..."
Wu Zui couldn’t help but applaud. "Good, good! Such people must be caught. But did you ever think about being caught when you caused someone else’s father to die? No, that’s not my concern. My concern is whether you understand the feelings of someone willing to do anything for their daughter."
"I..." Liu Yinyan suddenly fell silent.
It was as if he were transported back thirty-five years to a time when he would have given up his own life for his daughter to survive. The feeling of being against the whole world just to ensure his daughter lived on. Thirty-five years later, Liu Yinyan still had no daughter; perhaps he could not comprehend that feeling.
But now thirty-five years had passed, and Liu Yinyan's daughter had grown to nineteen.
So did Liu Yinyan understand this emotion now?
"I understand," Liu Yinyan said with a bitter smile. "Thirty-five years ago, I had no choice. If Ren hadn’t died, perhaps I would have died instead. But now I have many choices; I can help many people. Why must we cling to what happened thirty-five years ago?"
Liu Yinyan's tears flowed freely.
Wu Zui ignored him and turned to Liu Fei'er, asking, "So, Liu Fei'er, since you gave yourself to someone at the age of sixteen, were you willing at that time?"
Wu Zui seemed determined to get to the bottom of things, shattering a father's dignity into pieces. Now, he was about to lay bare a daughter's self-respect for her father to see. How could this father and daughter face each other again after this? How could they greet each other with a smile?
Liu Fei'er had stopped crying; perhaps once certain things were revealed, there was no point in continuing. She had decided to let it all go: "Yes, I was willing at that time."
These words completely shattered Liu Yinyan's heart. As a man who was strict with others, he was even harsher on his own family. But how could Liu Yinyan have imagined that his only daughter would make such choices?
It is easy to break a person; just crush what is most important to them and show it to them.
"Not bad, lovely," Wu Zui said as he touched Liu Fei'er's face. He then turned to Liu Yinyan and said, "Liu Yinyan, you heard that. I think you finally understand what an overly wounded heart feels like—how bitter and helpless it is. So, are you willing to pay the price for the mistakes made thirty-five years ago?"
Wu Zui's words were light, yet they all floated into Liu Yinyan's ears.
A glimmer of light suddenly appeared in Liu Yinyan's murky eyes as he said, "I am seventy years old this year. Many people in this world do not live to see seventy. I only started learning when I was thirty; I only had a career at thirty-five; I only had a daughter when I was fifty."
"I feel like my time is always insufficient, so every time I am actually gambling—gambling on money, luck, and life." Liu Yinyan spoke lightly, "After living for so many years, I've finally understood one thing: what you want is not actually what you desire."
"When I came to Dongxing City, I just wanted to find a wife and have a child." Liu Yinyan closed his eyes. "When did I forget my original intention?"
These words were plain and simple, yet they carried an indescribable sadness in my heart. A man who once dominated the financial world actually wanted very little.
Yet in the rush of life, people often forget why they are running.
"So you've made up your mind!" Wu Zui suddenly stood up.
"Yes!" Liu Yinyan said calmly.
A gun was pressed against Liu Yinyan's head.
"Don't!" I shouted.
"Go ahead!" Liu Yinyan yelled back.
Wu Zui sighed and said, "When a person is about to die, their words become kind. But so many years have passed; what's done is done."
He lowered the gun, and we all breathed a sigh of relief.
Liu Yinyan's expression relaxed.
"Bang!"
Blood splattered as Liu Yinyan fell backward, a gaping hole in his forehead.
"Haha, I was just kidding!" Wu Zui laughed heartily.
