"How is it?" Seeing me hang up the phone, Gu Chen hurriedly asked, "Did the identification results come out?"
I nodded and walked outside without looking back. "The results are in. Liu Fei'er is not Liu Yinyan's biological daughter. This aligns with my suspicions, so the next guess is likely to be correct as well. Do you remember the questions Wu Zui asked Liu Fei'er in the workshop?"
Gu Chen pondered for a moment before replying, "I remember. I was tied up next to the stairs on the first floor, so I couldn't see what was happening, but I heard everything Wu Zui said clearly. However, I don't quite understand what was wrong with Wu Zui's questions."
"There was a problem, a significant one." I tugged at my hair and slowly said, "The questions Wu Zui asked were very secretive, even Liu Yinyan didn't know about them. So where did Wu Zui get this information? I think it certainly wasn't Liu Fei'er who told him."
Gu Chen's eyes widened. "Then who told Wu Zui?"
I had already pieced together most of the situation; now I just needed to find evidence of Liu Fei'er meeting that left-handed person, and everything would be resolved.
I stopped and said to Gu Chen, "It's still not the right time to discuss this. Once we find Liu Fei'er, I'll tell you the truth, okay?"
Gu Chen shrugged. "Are you keeping me in suspense again?"
I smiled without answering.
The next step was to wait for news from Song Zhe. After an hour and a half had passed, when it was already getting dark, Song Zhe finally called us.
"Hello, Officer Wu." Song Zhe's voice was low but couldn't hide his excitement. "Come to 6 Heping Road quickly; I saw Liu Fei'er and that middle-aged man walking in one after the other. I don't know when they'll come out, so hurry up! If you arrive late, you might miss them."
I shook my phone at Gu Chen and said, "The truth is about to come to light. Let's head to 6 Heping Road; it seems it's not far from their school. If I'm not mistaken, you're going to witness a tragedy."
"A tragedy?" Gu Chen asked in confusion.
"Yeah." I didn't know how to describe this feeling: "I think sometimes we police officers are like doctors performing surgery. Some people seem fine on the surface, but when you cut through their skin and muscle, you find that inside they are rotting beyond recognition. All the pus and toxins are laid bare before you, and not everyone can handle that."
Gu Chen drove in silence.
When we arrived at the location that Song Zhe pointed out, we found him hiding behind a trash can, his eyes fixed on No. 6 Heping Road. It was a two-story shop that looked quite stylish. It was a cake shop, but there was a sign outside saying "Temporarily Closed."
I patted Song Zhe on the shoulder, startling him so much that he nearly jumped into the trash can.
"It's you guys?" When Song Zhe realized it was us, he finally relaxed: "I thought I had been exposed."
"Are you sure they went inside?" I asked Song Zhe.
Song Zhe nodded seriously and said, "That's right. After I received your text, I skipped class and waited under a tree at the main entrance of the school for Liu Fei'er. Sure enough, she showed up not long after. But even though my position was obvious, she still didn't see me."
Song Zhe looked a bit dejected: "But I don't care anymore. I never dared to hope for her attention, not even a moment's pause in her gaze. I kept following her, and when she came out of the office, she didn't go out the front door but took a side exit instead."
"I felt something was off at that moment," Song Zhe scratched his head and continued: "Her driver was clearly waiting at the front door for her, yet she chose to leave through the side. I followed her from a distance and then saw that middle-aged man. They walked all the way to this Cake Shop together. The moment the man entered, the Cake Shop closed its doors."
I nodded seriously and said, "You'd better not watch what happens next; your heart won't be able to take it."
"Really?" Song Zhe looked at me incredulously: "What happens next?"
I shook my head without answering and turned to Gu Chen: "Is there any way to get inside?"
"There is a way," Gu Chen said as he looked at the cake shop: "It just depends on whether our methods are proper."
I stared at the closed door of the cake shop and asked, "Did you use some underhanded means?"
Just as my words fell, I heard the sound of glass shattering. Before I could react, Gu Chen was already standing inside the cake shop. I was stunned, watching Gu Chen in disbelief.
Gu Chen shrugged and said lightly, "What are you standing there for? Come in."
With a swift kick, Gu Chen broke open the locked glass door of the cake shop, sending shards scattering across the floor. But as soon as we stepped inside, we were met with a scene that Song Zhe could never have imagined. Clothes—jackets, shirts, underwear, shoes—were strewn all over the floor.
From the positions of the fallen garments, we could picture a man and a woman undressing while making their way to the back of the cake shop. When we pulled aside the curtain that was blocking our view, a shocking sight greeted us: a man and a woman lay naked on a bed.
From their panicked movements, it was clear that Gu Chen's entrance had startled them. Fortunately, they managed to cover themselves with a sheet, sparing them from complete embarrassment.
"Liu! Liu Fei'er?" At some point, Song Zhe had followed us inside.
To my surprise, he dropped to his knees with a thud. "You... you actually did something like this. I always thought you were different from those seductive vixens out there, but you're just like them. So kind and lovely, so beautiful and generous... and yet you’re like this..."
Tears streamed down Song Zhe's face.
I couldn't comprehend his feelings at all; I simply pushed him aside and turned to Liu Fei'er and the middle-aged man. "Get dressed, and then we can talk."
Neither of them spoke. I instructed Song Zhe to bring their clothes to them.
Before long, they were seated across from me and Gu Chen. The middle-aged man appeared to be around six feet tall and quite handsome, probably in his forties, with a well-groomed beard. He was also left-handed. It became clear that this middle-aged man was Liu Fei'er's father.
But why would a father and daughter engage in such behavior? That was another story altogether.
At that time, Liu Yinyan was fifty years old, while his Russian wife was only in her twenties. This couple, with such a significant age gap, often became the subject of gossip in Dongxing City. However, Liu Yinyan had always been someone who did whatever he wanted, never paying heed to others' advice.
Thus, they decided to marry.
But Liu Yinyan was already fifty. He had worked hard all his life and had only one kidney left, which severely affected the viability of his sperm. In reality, Liu Fei'er's mother understood that Liu Yinyan would never have a child of his own.
Moreover, Liu Yinyan's capabilities in that regard were quite limited.
In other words, if it weren't for the luxurious life Liu Yinyan provided her, she would never have married him. However, asking a woman in her twenties to give up on the desires of love and intimacy was clearly impossible. So, Liu Fei'er's mother had an affair.
As a young and beautiful woman who lacked nothing financially, she naturally attracted many suitors.
The handsome man before me won over Liu Fei'er's mother with his looks, physique, and prowess. After a passionate encounter, they conceived a child. Initially, she planned to terminate the pregnancy but later reconsidered and decided to keep the baby.
She still thought of Liu Yinyan because he desperately wanted a child.
After Liu Fei'er was born, Liu Yinyan never doubted her parentage. He provided Liu Fei'er with the best of everything and treated Liu Fei'er's mother exceptionally well.
There came a moment when Liu Fei'er's mother felt like she wasn't a person, that she was worthless. Liu Yinyan gave her everything he had, yet she betrayed him. Once their daughter grew up, Liu Fei'er's mother returned to Russia, completely ending that chapter of her life.
However, this middle-aged man was hopelessly in love with Liu Fei'er's mother. What he didn't know was that she only sought to satisfy her own desires while he had developed genuine feelings for her.
If he couldn't have Liu Fei'er's mother, then he would settle for her daughter.
At sixteen years old, Liu Fei'er resembled her mother closely but was even more beautiful and captivating.
Hatred can be prolonged, and so can love.
At that time, Liu Fei'er lived a life of luxury, yet she was deeply lacking in parental affection. It was during this period that an uncle appeared, providing her with the care of a father and the love of a boyfriend. When Liu Fei'er turned sixteen, she willingly gave herself to this man, whom she intended to commit to for life.
But at that moment, the man revealed to Liu Fei'er that he was actually her father.
Instead of being shocked or afraid, Liu Fei'er held him even tighter.
Liu Yinyan once said something profound: "It is only at this age that you realize what you truly want is not what you wanted in the end."
Liu Fei'er understood this truth when she was just sixteen.
What she desired was not money; all she wanted was companionship.
Crying, Liu Fei'er embraced the man before her tightly—he was both her boyfriend and her father.
Thus, all questions found their answers.
Aside from Liu Fei'er, he was the only one who knew the secret between them. The only person who could tell Wu Zui the secret was likely this man.
