I watched the woman’s back, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity, as if I had seen her somewhere before. I wanted to turn around and take a closer look, but by the time I could make out her features, she had already disappeared around the corner. At that moment, the others had also come over, so I decided not to linger any longer.
Captain Shao exchanged some pleasantries with the Head Nurse, who wore an expression of helplessness. Every time we arrived, it seemed to bring a host of various problems. The Head Nurse was clearly frustrated but felt powerless to change the situation.
I still wanted to see Wang Er Gou; after all, I didn’t know when I would have the chance to meet him again.
I turned to Gu Chen and the others and said, “You guys head back first. I’m going to check on Wang Er Gou.”
Guan Zengbin spoke up, “Alright, you go ahead. Come back and find us when you’re done. After all, Wang Er Gou is your dog—no, that sounds awkward.”
I waved my hand dismissively. “It’s not awkward; Wang Er Gou thinks of himself as a dog. And he believes he’s the most obedient and amazing dog in the world. That statement is the best compliment for him.”
Guan Zengbin shook his head and sighed lightly, “Wang Er Gou is a good person, but he’s been through so much. Being a grave robber is a serious crime; if things continue this way, he might end up executed. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what is a blessing and what is a curse.”
I chuckled softly and replied, “At least right now, Wang Er Gou is happy. He has forgotten that he once brutally killed his own father and that during the tomb raiding incident, his father left him alone in darkness for three days.”
“Sometimes, looking at these mentally ill patients…”
I pointed casually at the patients in the distance; some were crouching, some standing, some shouting, and others laughing. “To others, these people seem insane, but at least they are happy now. Before becoming mentally ill, they were all unhappy. If they were happy then, they wouldn’t have become mentally ill.”
“Perhaps this is an old form of care.”
We parted ways, and I headed off to find Wang Er Gou.
When I found him, he was curled up in the sunlight like a dog. I noticed his face had a large lipstick mark on it—probably left by his lover. Thinking about it, perhaps this was indeed nice; being happy and loved.
Just as I approached Wang Er Gou, he suddenly sat up like a dog and looked around until he finally spotted me. His face lit up with uncontainable joy as he ran toward me barking excitedly.
“Master! You came to see me!” Wang Er Gou licked my hand eagerly.
I nodded and patted his head gently. “How are you doing?”
Wang Er Gou stuck out his tongue and said, "I'm doing great here. There's food and drink, and a bunch of people to play with. But sometimes, I miss my owner. You have to come see me more often, okay?"
Looking at Wang Er Gou, I felt a warmth in my heart. Perhaps in this world, only when a person becomes a dog can they escape the intrigues of life and remain happy.
Humans might be able to understand all the animals in this world, learn their habits, know their anatomy, and even understand which parts are beneficial for consumption. Yet humans never truly know what their loved ones across the table are thinking, nor do they fully grasp their own thoughts.
I quietly sat with Wang Er Gou for over half an hour, playing frisbee for quite some time. As darkness fell, I knew it was time for me to leave.
When I returned to the City Bureau, everyone was there; Liu was still waiting for me in the conference room.
Upon seeing me enter, Liu said, "Wu Meng, you're back. I've found some clues."
"Really?" I looked at Liu and asked, "What clues?"
Liu handed me a document and continued, "I found the man who left with the Boss Lady from the Adult Store. This man is still alive. He’s wealthy, and she has a good figure; they were just fulfilling their needs. When they left, he dropped her off in that alley by the Adult Store, and then..."
"What happened?" I asked.
Liu glanced at me with an expression of disbelief mixed with fear and said, "The Boss Lady didn’t return to the store. The moment he blinked, she vanished. They had only walked halfway when it was as if she disappeared without a trace..."
This was indeed strange. I asked, "And then?"
Liu replied, "The bones we brought back underwent DNA testing; they indeed belonged to the Boss Lady from the Adult Store. Her time of death was on the night of the twenty-third—right at that moment when the man blinked; she died at that instant."
"What was the cause of death?" I inquired.
Liu swallowed hard and said, "That's the problem. According to Zhang Qinrui's forensic autopsy results, she died from having her trachea bitten through directly by someone. Although we have the murderer's DNA, we have no match for comparison; knowing the DNA is useless without a suspect."
A scene flashed through my mind: on a pitch-black night after a passionate encounter between the woman and the man, he escorted her home. The alley was narrow; instead of driving in, he parked outside. The woman felt scared, but he promised to watch her safely home from the alley's entrance.
The man suddenly felt an itch in his eyes, so he rubbed them. But when he lifted his head again, the woman was gone.
He was puzzled; she had only just walked halfway, and there was no way she could have locked the door and left in the few seconds it took him to rub his eyes. However, the man didn’t care much for her, so he didn’t bother to call and ask. He turned around and drove away, leaving the alley even darker.
At that moment, the woman was pressed against the wall, struggling desperately.
She was terrified and wanted to make some noise, but it was futile. At that moment, someone had her throat firmly in their grip, sharp teeth biting into her neck, severing her trachea. She opened her mouth, recalling a time when she had lost her front teeth and spoke with a lisp.
But now, her neck was leaking air.
Slowly, the woman began to die. The murderer used a key to open the door and entered the warehouse. In the dark passage, he dismembered her body into small pieces of flesh and then used them to feed stray cats. At first, the wild cats were very resistant to this person.
But as time passed, these wild cats eventually became familiar with him. They could eat in front of this human, chase each other, and play; they began to see him as one of their own. Then, the murderer wrote down the second story.
“Did that man have any issues?” I asked.
Liu shook his head and said, “The man definitely didn’t have time to commit the crime; he’s a big boss at a company, and every move he makes is watched closely. He had no opportunity to do something like this. However, that man did call the woman several times afterward, but she never answered.”
After a pause, Liu Jixu continued, “So the man came looking for her a few times but she was never there. Once, he saw a woman walk out of the house and simply asked about her. That woman said that the previous boss lady had quit and gone home; she had just taken over the shop.”
I nodded for Liu Jixu to continue.
Liu Yi flipped through some documents while speaking: “The man didn’t suspect anything; after all, it wasn’t a big deal. He thought that the woman had found a boyfriend and cut ties with him. However, he did notice what that woman looked like.”
“What did she look like?” I asked eagerly.
Liu handed me a sketch and said, “This is what she looked like based on the man's description.”
As I looked at it, Liu explained: “The woman was wearing a black hoodie with the hood up. She stood about five feet six inches tall and wore flat shoes. She had light makeup on her face; according to that boss's words, it gave off a pure vibe. Judging by her appearance, she seemed like an eighteen-year-old girl.”
Liu paused for a moment before continuing, "That woman has a faint blush on her face, very white teeth, black eyeliner, and her eyes are dark and bright. Her nose and lips are pink. She has short bangs, and as the heat rises, she isn't wearing much clothing; her chest is probably a B cup."
"B?" I asked. "You can tell all that?"
Liu nodded. "Yeah, Boss. He's a rich second-generation kid who hasn't been without women since he was fourteen. In his life, he's probably been with at least eight hundred women. No matter who it is or what they're wearing, as long as he looks at them, he can tell their cup size..."
I sighed in disbelief. "How does that sound so unbelievable?"
Liu shook his head seriously. "I asked him multiple times; a man's expression shouldn't lie."
"Then this is problematic!" I lightly tapped the table.
Liu nodded and sighed. "Yes, this is a problem. If this is the Murderer, then the Murderer is a woman. So in the first case, whose semen was all over the bed? Is the Murderer male or female, or are there multiple Murderers?"
I rested my chin on my hand. "It's unclear; it seems this case is quite complicated. And one more thing: if Boss Lady died twenty-three years ago, then it’s clear that the Murderer isn’t committing crimes one story at a time but is interweaving them throughout different stories."
As I spoke, I slipped my hand into my pocket and suddenly realized there was a piece of paper inside that I had no memory of putting there.
I pulled it out casually and saw a line of writing.
I recognized that handwriting.
