Guan Zengbin and Zhang Qinrui had just finished stitching up the body when they heard a police officer outside shouting that something was wrong. We stepped out to inquire and learned that another person had died. According to the officer, the circumstances of the two deaths were quite suspicious, and the scene had already been cordoned off by the local Police Station.
I turned to the officer and asked, "Where is it?"
The officer glanced at me and Liu before responding, "Happiness District, where Old Wang and this child lived."
We exchanged glances, understanding that with another death at this critical moment, it must mean that the Murderer had resumed killing. After discovering Old Wang's information, a team had already been dispatched to investigate that area. How could the Murderer continue to kill without being detected?
The officer only had a vague understanding of the situation and couldn't answer my questions. I looked at the child's parents for a moment before leaning closer to Guan Zengbin and asking, "The autopsy on the child is complete, right?"
Guan Zengbin nodded and replied, "That's correct."
I turned to Zhang Qinrui and said, "Zhang Qinrui, you stay here to help. The rest of us will head to Happiness District for an investigation."
Without further delay, we drove toward Happiness District, with Liu taking his team along as well.
In the car, I asked Guan Zengbin, "What was the situation with that child?"
Guan Zengbin carefully placed the gloves used for the autopsy into a toolbox before answering, "It was confirmed as a death from a high fall; the cause was a broken spine. The time of death was around one o'clock this morning. There were no traces of any drugs found in the child's system, indicating that he was conscious when he was thrown from the building. However, he couldn't scream."
"Why not?" I inquired.
Guan Zengbin wore a sorrowful expression as she explained, "The child's parents were outside earlier, so I didn't dare speak up. The child's tongue had been cut out and a large stone stuffed inside. When he fell from the building, his teeth collided with the stone, causing all his teeth to break. It's truly horrific."
I rested my chin on my hand, trying to suppress my anger. We all knew that this Murderer showed no mercy; even with an innocent child, there would be no hesitation in their actions. They were like a cold-blooded animal, driven solely by a desire to kill.
Sighing deeply, I finally spoke up: "Old Wang's fantasy has come true; this chattering child is dead and can no longer make a sound. So who will be the next victim?"
"The Murderer's narrative has led Old Wang to envision three scenarios," Gu Chen said while driving intently. "The first scenario involves a worker getting caught in machinery but doesn't mention any specific names. The second is about a widow living across from Old Wang's house. The third person is this child, who is already dead."
Hearing Gu Chen's words, I slowly said, "So, the person who died this time should be that widow."
Before long, we arrived at Happiness District. As we drove through the main gate, we could see a building surrounded by people inside and out without even getting out of the car. In front of the building, a police cordon had been set up.
After parking the car, two teams quickly moved forward.
Along the way, the voices of the crowd were incessant.
"I heard it was that widow on the second floor who died," one woman said, cupping her hands around her mouth to speak to another nearby, but her voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Really?" The other woman, clearly not a resident of the building, asked, "Is she the one who brought men home?"
The first woman nodded with a determined look in her eyes. "Yes, that's her. With a lifestyle like that, she was bound to die in bed."
"What did she die from?" another woman inquired.
All eyes turned to the first woman as if she had personally witnessed the scene.
As we entered the building, a police officer came out to greet us and led us upstairs. This was Team Leader Li's team. While guiding us up, he reported to Liu, "Captain Liu, Team Leader Li instructed us to investigate each character mentioned in the story one by one, so we're going through them systematically."
Liu nodded and asked, "Who is the deceased?"
By this time, we had reached the second floor and saw that Room 1 had its door open but was cordoned off with police tape. It was clear that the resident of this apartment had died. Inside, team members were already investigating the scene and taking photographs.
We lifted the police tape and stepped inside. The officer continued explaining the case: "According to our investigation, this woman's name is Zhou Yufeng. She is thirty-two years old. Five years ago, Zhou Yufeng's husband died in a car accident, and they had no children. Based on our interviews with neighbors, this woman has a poor reputation."
Liu nodded in acknowledgment.
The officer continued, "In these five years, Zhou Yufeng hasn't held any steady job; she relied on men for support. She has had several regular lovers who maintained her standard of living. In essence, it's not much different from being a long-term prostitute. We were initially tasked with investigating her."
"Nobody agreed," the police officer said. "Later, the more we thought about it, the more uneasy we felt, so we kicked the door open, and then we saw this scene inside."
He pointed into the bedroom.
When we saw the scene, we were all taken aback.
"From the looks of it, the scene hasn't been disturbed..." Guan Zengbin remarked.
One of the team members added, "They knew you were coming, so they didn't touch anything. Besides, this kind of death is probably unique in the country."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
The manner of death was indeed quite "trendy," unprecedented even. The room we were facing was a bedroom, with a large bed in the center. On that bed lay two corpses. The two bodies were positioned with the woman on top and the man below, both completely naked.
Gu Chen shook his head, wearing an expression that was hard to read—whether to laugh or cry. "At least we know they were killed while they were... engaged in an activity."
Gu Chen's observation was accurate; it was clear that the two had died while making love.
The female corpse lay on top, while the male corpse was beneath her.
They were pierced together by a rebar about the thickness of a finger. The rebar was roughly one meter long and had entered from the woman's back at an angle. It pierced through her abdomen and continued downward into the man's belly, effectively joining them as one.
The female corpse leaned back but remained suspended due to the rebar, maintaining her position as if she had not fallen onto the bed. It resembled a sculpture; the male corpse served as the base while the female corpse formed the body of the sculpture, holding their last moment in a delicate balance.
Thus, the woman's hands still gripped the man's thighs, while his arms wrapped around her waist as if they had never died at all.
The entire rebar was smeared with dark red blood, and there were bloodstains all over the sheets. Both bodies were also stained with blood. The walls and ceiling bore traces of blood as well. The blood splatter appeared to have sprayed outwards, some even rebounding off the walls. It looked like a scene from a horror movie.
These bloodstains indicated that when the rebar pierced them, both individuals were still alive.
A police officer said, "I wonder if the two felt comfortable or in pain when they died."
Liu turned to look at the officer, who immediately fell silent.
Liu then spoke, "From the condition of the bodies, we can easily draw a conclusion. The two were engaged in intimate activities when they were pierced by a rebar thrust through by the murderer lurking nearby. With one thrust of the rebar, both were impaled, blood splattering everywhere, naturally getting on the murderer as well..."
I glanced at Guan Zengbin and said, "Let's get the bodies down..."
Several officers nodded but were at a loss for how to remove the two corpses, standing by helplessly. Gu Chen looked over, frowned, and then approached the bed. Putting on gloves, he reached for the exposed rebar and yanked it out forcefully. A meter-long piece of rebar was pulled from the body.
Without the support of the rebar, the female corpse immediately toppled over onto the bed, a small amount of blood oozing from the two wounds.
I looked at the rebar in Gu Chen's hand; it was sharp and resembled a severed spear. A thrust like that would surely pierce deeply. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the front end of this rebar had a hexagonal shape with deep grooves filled with blood.
Turning back to examine the puncture wounds on both bodies, I saw that they were hexagonal as well. I thought that doctors would likely dread encountering such wounds because suturing them would be quite challenging. This was why three-edged razors had long been considered one of the most brutal cold weapons.
Blood flowed continuously from the grooves like a stream, spraying out while air rushed in to clog the veins. It wouldn't take long before both individuals would succumb to their injuries. This type of rebar must have been crafted by the murderer himself.
Gu Chen examined the rebar and said, "This kind of rebar creates significant resistance once it penetrates human flesh. We've probably seen situations on TV where a knife can be thrust into someone without immediate consequence, but once it's pulled out, death follows quickly. That's because those knives are smooth and lack any patterns."
"But this one," Gu Chen shook his head, "won't hold up for long."
