“Intersex Person?” The two of them clearly did not follow my train of thought, both gasping in surprise, unable to comprehend how I arrived at this conclusion.
I glanced at their astonished faces and said, “That's right, Murderer should be an Intersex Person, and this might be the fundamental reason why Murderer has developed multiple Personalities. We all know that the timelines of these three stories overlap. Murderer first killed the Adult Store Owner in the second story, and then proceeded to kill the two White-collar workers in the first story.”
The two nodded in agreement.
I continued, “Moreover, when Murderer killed the family in the second story, they had actually been living in the sewers for a long time. The locations of these three incidents are quite far apart. That's why Liu Yi believes that Murderer must have many accomplices; otherwise, how could one person go so far out of their way to commit murder?”
My statement seemed to resonate with Gu Chen, who spoke up, “Exactly, I also think that way about why Murderer would do this. However, I later realized that Murderer is a perverse serial killer, and their thought process is different from that of normal people. If we could understand it, we might as well be considered perverse ourselves.”
I replied, “It’s probably not just that; Murderer has multiple Personalities. It's like having several souls within one body, and these souls cannot see each other. So every time Murderer wakes up, they may not even know where they are. Each soul can control their body for only a limited time, and none of them want their secrets to be discovered.”
Mary chimed in, continuing my line of thought, “I've encountered similar situations before; it's quite possible. Are you suggesting that when Murderer kills different people, different souls are controlling the body? That's why some methods of killing are bizarre and strange while others are straightforward or gruesome?”
I snapped my fingers and said, “Why does Murderer write stories?”
This question plunged both of them into deep thought; it had been a point I had been pondering as well. Indeed, Murderer wrote stories but did not strictly follow the timelines in them for their killings. Moreover, at the end of each story, Murderer would write a segment of English Letters, and at this moment, I finally understood.
Murderer was not writing for us or anyone else; they were writing for themselves. The words left behind were reminders for Murderer, indicating that these people had been killed by another version of themselves—one of their other Personalities. The remaining ones should not continue to appear here.
I answered my own question: “I believe there are a few Personalities that can see each other.”
Imagine waking up in bed only to find yourself walking down the street. Or chatting happily with friends only to suddenly realize you’re back home. One moment you’re in this city; the next moment, you don’t know where you’ve gone.
Over time, there will always be someone clever enough to notice something unusual about their body. I think this storyteller is the more intelligent one among the various Personalities, who has realized the existence of the others within their body. And I was fortunate enough to witness three of Murderer’s Personalities in the sewer.
The one who injured Zhao Mingkun is likely the fourth Personality, referred to as Yama by one of the other Personalities. I suspect that as time goes on, these various Personalities within Murderer have become aware of each other's existence.
However, a Personality capable of killing others might also seek opportunities to eliminate the remaining ones within itself.
Just then, Guan Zengbin walked in, yawning as she said, “I could hear you all from my dormitory! Why are you all gathered here so late at night?”
I shared my thoughts with Guan Zengbin, who suddenly appeared energized and said, “Wu Meng, I know you've studied a lot about psychology; however, most of what you know comes from what those inmates in prison told you. If your guess is correct, then this condition is called Multiple Personality, not just a split in Personality.”
"What’s the difference?" I scratched my head, realizing I hadn't noticed this point at all.
Guan Zengbin sat on the bed, holding Mary close. "Of course there is. The symptoms of personality splitting generally include a few key points: extreme introversion, loneliness, indifference, and almost never speaking to others. Usually, these individuals have expressionless faces and cannot effectively express their emotions; their behavior is odd, and they lack sexual impulses."
"Multiple Personality is easier to understand," Guan Zengbin leaned against Mary and continued. "A person has multiple personalities that coexist within their body. Some can recognize the other personalities, while others cannot. These personalities can vary greatly in terms of gender, age, height, and weight; of course, this difference exists only in consciousness."
Guan Zengbin added, "A murderer who is 1.7 meters tall will not suddenly become 1.8 meters tall under another personality. However, you may have heard about the subconscious influence on one’s body. When a person truly believes they have cancer, the cells in their body may inexplicably wither and die. Conversely, if someone genuinely believes they are a strongman, their strength can exceed what they are normally capable of."
I nodded and said, "So that’s why the murderer could pierce through two bodies with rebar."
Guan Zengbin nodded in agreement.
I continued, "And I believe the murderer should be an intersex person."
Guan Zengbin furrowed his brow.
"There should be such a possibility in medicine," I stated.
Guan Zengbin was silent for a moment before responding, "Indeed, from a medical perspective, there is such a possibility. In fact, if we categorize it medically, humans have seven genders. Aside from the normal male and female genders, there are five additional ones."
"So many?" I had never expected my question would lead to such a medical discussion.
Guan Zengbin shrugged and said seriously, "To put it simply: external male but internal female—having male external genitalia but lacking certain internal organs while possessing ovaries and a uterus. External male but not male internally—having male external genitalia but lacking those internal organs. External female but internal male—having female external genitalia but possessing male internal organs. External female but not female internally—having female external genitalia but lacking ovaries and a uterus."
"And there's one more," Guan Zengbin raised a finger. "True hermaphrodites possess a complete set of both male and female reproductive systems. There can be various changes in the external reproductive system as well; for example, both upper and lower or left and right variations are possible."
Listening to Guan Zengbin's words, our brows furrowed in confusion. My speculation about the murderer being sometimes male and sometimes female had not anticipated such depth.
Guan Zengbin spoke to us in a teacher-like tone: "Our country has a large population, so the probability of true hermaphrodites appearing is relatively high. Among these true hermaphrodites, sixty percent have a chromosomal composition of 46 chromosomes; thirty percent have 46Y; and ten percent are Y-chimeras."
I listened in bewilderment, completely lost in understanding.
Guan Zengbin raised his hands and said, "It's simple. The likelihood of organ cancer in true intersex individuals is quite high. It's more suitable for them to undergo surgery to become female, while y is more suited to become male. Of course, there are more cases for the former, so the surgical risks are significantly lower compared to the latter. Therefore, doctors usually recommend that both types choose to become female, as it tends to lead to a longer survival time."
"What about yy?" I asked.
"Such individuals are rare, and their causes have been a topic of debate in the medical community. Generally, there are two methods we know of. Twins can be either fraternal or identical. Identical twins arise from a single fertilized egg that splits into two, while fraternal twins come from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm. Since one fertilized egg can split into two, it stands to reason that two fertilized eggs can also merge into one."
"In simpler terms, fraternal twins can fuse during the developmental stage, resulting in one body with two sets of DNA."
I nodded, somewhat understanding.
Guan Zengbin continued, "The second possibility involves a sperm fertilizing an egg along with the polar bodies during division, leading to the formation of a single embryo. Regardless of which scenario it is, such individuals are extremely rare. If Murderer truly belongs to this gender category, then they indeed embody both male and female traits."
I slapped my thigh and said, "Liu has always been a meticulous person. If he can't ascertain something, he rarely brings it up prematurely. When he was with us, it seemed like his role was minimal, but when he worked alone on a case, everything became clear. So Liu must have found another DNA strand among those shattered pieces, which is why he was certain that there were multiple Murderers."
"And," I continued, "even though Liu is eager to climb the ranks, he would never act recklessly when it comes to human lives. This shows that he believes he can catch those Murderers. But in reality, Liu's approach is misguided; he won't be able to catch the Murderer, and without key clues, we won't find them either."
I furrowed my brow and said seriously, "So now we need to check that shard immediately. If Liu could discern something from it, then we should be able to uncover some information as well."
"Shall we go now?" Gu Chen asked. "You all don't need a break?"
Guan Zengbin replied, "No sleep for us. By tonight, the Murderer will strike again; we can't let them kill again."
