Without any hesitation, Zhao Mingkun revved the motorcycle and sped out of the area. The security guards at the entrance barely had time to react before he disappeared into the distance. Our blood-stained appearance drew a lot of attention as we rode along, making us stand out like fireflies in the night. It seemed impossible to find a place to change our clothes.
Zhao Mingkun looked a bit anxious at that moment, and I couldn't understand why his reaction was so intense.
I asked, "Why the rush? This isn't like you."
Zhao Mingkun replied quickly, "I’ll say it again: never think of yourself as the smartest person in the room. That security guard you encountered earlier was quite sharp. While Wang Qianduo was still in the hallway, he rallied the other guards to come after us. Clearly, he’s nearby."
I furrowed my brow and asked, "What do you mean?"
Zhao Mingkun continued, "I'm worried he might have called the police while we were looking for Wang Qianduo. The police could already be blocking the nearby roads, waiting for us to slip through! Have you noticed that there are only cars leaving but none coming in?"
I hadn’t paid attention until he pointed it out, but now I realized he was right. On the roadway, there were only vehicles exiting this street; none were entering. Looking around, I saw pedestrians staring at us with expressions of fear. They probably thought we were fleeing from an accident.
However, as I continued to scan the crowd, I noticed some unusual individuals among them. Their expressions were stern, and they walked straight ahead without glancing around. I focused on one of them, but he didn’t look up at me. This was very unusual.
For a woman walking down the street, if she suspects that a man behind her is following her, she can easily turn around and glare at him. If he suddenly averts his gaze and avoids eye contact, it’s best to head towards a crowded area; that person is definitely stalking her.
The eyes are windows to the soul; when someone is unprepared and you glare at them suddenly, they will instinctively look back at you. Conversely, if they avoid your gaze when you stare at them, it indicates they don’t want to draw your attention.
I had been staring directly at him for some time now, yet he still wouldn’t meet my gaze. Given my bloodied appearance and the attention we were attracting, this was indeed strange.
"Undercover!" I exclaimed.
At that moment, Zhao Mingkun abruptly stopped the motorcycle. Due to inertia, I collided into him.
"Get off," Zhao Mingkun shouted.
I jumped down directly, and Zhao Mingkun threw the motorcycle to the ground, pulling me into an alley as we ran. As we took off, the Undercover agents also started moving, chasing us from a distance.
At that moment, I realized that if it weren't for Zhao Mingkun's keen intuition, we would have likely driven straight into a trap set by the police.
While we ran into the alley, I said, "If the police have surrounded this area, where can we escape to?"
Zhao Mingkun replied, "If I remember correctly, when I rode past here on the motorcycle, I saw a Sewer Cover."
"You noticed that?" I exclaimed in surprise.
Sure enough, a Sewer Cover appeared right in front of us.
Zhao Mingkun smiled at me and said, "Remember, always leave yourself an escape route."
Together, we lifted the Sewer Cover. But at that moment, the Undercover agents had already rushed into the mouth of the alley. Without hesitation, Zhao Mingkun pulled out her empty handgun and aimed it at the Undercover agents while saying, "Don't move! If you do, I won't hold back."
The dark muzzle of the gun pointed at the Undercover agents made them stop at the entrance of the alley.
I climbed down first, and Zhao Mingkun slowly followed me.
The cover closed behind us, plunging us into darkness. Zhao Mingkun pulled me to one side as we ran; in the dark environment, all we could hear were our footsteps.
However, the further we ran, the more uneasy I felt. Liu had now become the captain of the Dongxing City Public Security Bureau Criminal Investigation Team. He knew well about the escape methods that Zhao Mingkun and I often used. If Liu had arranged for our encirclement, he definitely wouldn't overlook the sewer.
But from what I could see now, it seemed there was no one guarding this sewer.
As we continued running, I heard footsteps behind us. We both understood simultaneously that someone was chasing us from behind.
I spoke up, "If it's Liu, he might have set an ambush in the sewer."
As soon as I finished speaking, I heard footsteps approaching from ahead. We were surrounded, with only one side offering a way out. Without a second thought, Zhao Mingkun and I dashed into the side passage. I had no idea how long we ran, twisting and turning through the sewer, only to find our path blocked by a rebar mesh.
Faintly, I could see a beam of light shining through two openings in the sewer.
"There," Zhao Mingkun pointed at the sewer cover.
I nodded and followed him forward.
But just then, Zhao Mingkun suddenly stopped.
I was about to ask what was wrong when I noticed someone standing in front of him. It was none other than Liu, with a dark gun barrel pressed against Zhao Mingkun's head.
Liu had indeed laid an ambush in the sewer, but it seemed he was alone here.
Without thinking twice, I drew Zhao Mingkun's pistol from his waist and aimed it at Liu's head.
No one spoke; the three of us stood silently together.
The weak sunlight barely illuminated us. In the darkness, we were close enough to see each other's expressions. Liu seemed to have matured significantly since we last met. He stared at Zhao Mingkun without moving. Zhao Mingkun returned his gaze, equally still.
I lowered my voice and said, "Liu, if you don't want to die, put down the gun!"
Liu let out a cold laugh without looking at me and said, "Wu Meng, it seems you're the one seeking death. This matter has nothing to do with you; why do you insist on getting involved? If you truly didn't kill anyone, someone could prove your innocence. But now? You're already a fugitive; any police officer who sees you has the right to shoot you on sight."
I looked at Liu and replied word by word, "And now you're talking to me? If it weren't for your testimony back then, I wouldn't have fallen to this point. Liu, I never realized you were the undercover agent at the police station. Yan Wang recorded everything in his notebook, yet you never mentioned it. Otherwise, we would have known that the murderer had another hidden personality long ago. What benefits did Wu Zui offer you for you to act this way?"
Liu fell silent for a moment, but then suddenly burst into laughter. "Wu Meng, haven't you always thought of yourself as clever? Why is it that you're only just figuring things out now?"
I glared at him fiercely. "You really are in cahoots with Wu Zui. After Gu Chen was taken away, you were the first to step forward and want to negotiate with Wu Zui. I suppose you were confident that you wouldn't be in any danger, right? You did this just to show off in front of everyone."
Liu didn't respond, so I continued, "You conspired with Wu Zui and worked hard to get into this position. Once you secured your seat, I bet Wu Zui had some schemes planned. I don't know why Wu Zui always targets me, but I guess that's also why you'll testify against me in court."
"Wu Meng."
After calling my name, Liu fell silent. He seemed like he wanted to say something to me, but ultimately remained quiet.
"What's wrong?" I pressed on. "Out of words?"
Liu frowned and said, "Wu Meng, you'd better not get involved in this matter. We had everything planned out; all you had to do was spend a few months in your cell. By then, even if the truth of the matter wasn't clear, we could still find a way to get you out. But you're ignoring the path laid before you and heading straight for hell!"
Hearing Liu's words filled me with disgust. I had heard similar sentiments from Zhao Mingkun as well. Both of them wanted to keep me out of this situation, yet Wu Zui was clearly targeting me. Why were they both so reluctant to let me get involved?
One was Wu Zui's older sister who raised him, and the other was the captain of the criminal investigation team connected to Wu Zui.
"Do you understand?" Liu said harshly. "Wu Meng, if this continues, you're really going to die! If I wanted to kill you, I would have done it already; do you understand?"
As he spoke, Liu finally couldn't help but look at me.
At that moment, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Zhao Mingkun's hand suddenly move.
"Bang!" A gunshot rang out.
Flashes of light erupted, momentarily blinding us all. When I could finally open my eyes again, the gun was already in Zhao Mingkun's hand.
Liu had not yet reacted when Zhao Mingkun snatched the gun from his hands. Liu Gang attempted to fight back, but I pointed the gun sharply at his head and said, "Liu, I advise you not to move. Otherwise, you know what the consequences will be."
Liu stood there, lowering his voice as he shouted, "Wu Meng, have you really gone mad? Do you know that the woman in front of you is an enemy of Guan Zengbin? Do you understand that Guan Zengbin came to Dongxing City specifically to capture her? Do you realize that Guan Zengbin studied Forensic just to catch her?"
"Right now!" Liu glared at me, his eyes seemingly ablaze with fury. "You actually got involved with her. If Guan Zengbin finds out, how will she view you? You know very well she has feelings for you; you know she likes you. How can you do this to her?"
"Shut up!" I gritted my teeth. "How dare you mention her! If it weren't for your failure to reveal the truth, how could Guan Zengbin have been captured by Wu Zui? You colluded with Wu Zui and even used Guan Zengbin as a pawn?"
Zhao Mingkun glanced behind him and said, "It's been a while, and the police haven't caught up. Something's not right. Where there's smoke, there's fire; we shouldn't linger here any longer. Let's move!"
With that, Zhao Mingkun removed the magazine from Liu's gun, engaged the safety, and hurled it away into the distance.
Zhao Mingkun went to open the manhole cover while I slowly backed away.
"Liu Dao," I heard Liu say, "Wu Meng, one misstep leads to another. Can't you trust me just this once?"
"I've already trusted you once."
I handed the gun to Zhao Mingkun, climbed up the stairs, and looked back. "I know that even if you're colluding with Wu Zui, no one would believe me. But Liu, one must have a conscience. You know better than I do what kind of person Wu Zui is."
With that, I climbed to the surface and covered the manhole.
