The soldiers surged toward Cyrus like a tide, vying for his favor. In that moment, the other centurions became overlooked scenery, fading into the background.
Suddenly, a man around fifty years old stepped forward. He had a few white hairs on his head, but they were neatly groomed. Though slightly aged, he still maintained a level of fitness suitable for battle. He cleared his throat with authority, then clapped his hands lightly and said, "Everyone, calm down. We are all Romans. Let's show our civilization. If we need to queue, then let's queue properly. The most outstanding individuals will have the chance to be chosen, it's not about who gets to the front first. Agreed?"
Upon hearing the man's words, the soldiers quietly began to line up. Cyrus showed great interest in the man and asked him to introduce himself.
The man solemnly said, "My name is Constantine. I have served as a squad leader and a centurion deputy for thirty years. If I may, I hope to serve as your deputy."
Cyrus listened with respect, Constantine's words not only won his respect, but also restored order to the situation, which was exactly the quality he needed in a deputy.
Constantine walked to Cyrus's ear and whispered, "Be careful, your actions have made some centurions unhappy." He turned his head slightly and gestured backward, Cyrus turned to see Centurion Lucius staring at him coldly.
"Especially Lucius, he is the most detestable kind of person. Old fart, thinks he's all that just because he's been a soldier for a few more years. You better be careful."
Cyrus was taken aback, only now realizing that his behavior might have been too casual. Even with the support of Pluto Legion commander, he couldn't ignore the opinions of other senior officers.
"Then what should I do?" Cyrus asked urgently.
Constantine smiled and said, "How about this: you continue to examine each soldier, let them tell you their expertise and experience. Keep the ones you like, and I will recommend other centurions for the soldiers who are not chosen. This way, the centurion solves the problem of lack of soldiers, and the soldiers solve the problem of leadership. Isn't it a win-win situation?"
Cyrus nodded, and his worries were temporarily relieved. Constantine's words not only made him clear on how to deal with the upcoming challenges, but also made him deeply feel that there were still trustworthy and respectable people in this army.
"Constantine, would you be willing to serve as my deputy?" Cyrus looked at Constantine with a serious tone.
Constantine paused for a moment, then smiled and replied, "I would be delighted, centurion."
The two shook hands, expressing their determination to work together.
Cyrus turned around and once again examined the soldiers in front of him. His gaze became more severe and focused, because he knew that he was no longer acting alone. He had Constantine as his deputy, and together they were about to select a team of the most outstanding hundred soldiers.
Constantine stood by Cyrus's side, beginning to introduce each soldier's expertise and experience one by one. Cyrus listened carefully, occasionally nodding or asking a question.
"This is Maximus, he is skilled in archery, with both high range and accuracy."
"This is Adrian, his spear technique is also among the best in the army."
Cyrus listened to Constantine's introduction and finally selected his ideal hundred-person team. These soldiers were either skilled in close combat, proficient in long-range attacks, or demonstrated outstanding tactical performance. In any case, they were the individuals he believed could best accomplish the upcoming mission.
"Alright, our hundred-person team has been selected. Constantine, do you have any suggestions for this list?"
Constantine glanced at the list and nodded, "Very good, centurion. I believe this team will be an excellent army."
Cyrus felt a warm feeling in his heart. He knew that with Constantine as a reliable deputy, all the difficulties and challenges they were about to face would no longer be so daunting.
With the final selection of Cyrus's hundred-man team, Constantine wasted no time in taking action. He carefully arranged the previously rejected soldiers into the teams of other centurions. This move won the gratitude of the other centurions.
"If you seek better opportunities, you can go to centurion Max or centurion Victor. They need talents like yours," Constantine said to the rejected soldiers.
One after another, many centurions raised their hands from a distance to greet Cyrus. Even some of the centurions who had previously been slightly displeased with him smiled and nodded at him. This change filled Cyrus with a sense of satisfaction.
However, Centurion Lucius still frowned and did not change his opinion of Cyrus because of this incident.
"This little brat needs to be properly disciplined," Lucius thought to himself, then slowly walked towards Cyrus.
Seeing Lucius approaching, Constantine couldn't help but furrow his brow solemnly. He stepped forward and whispered to Cyrus, "Be careful, don't let him provoke you. Let's stay calm unless he starts something first."
Cyrus nodded, with a premonition of the impending unpleasantness.
Lucius walked up to Cyrus with a condescending look, sneering, "Oh, newcomer, I heard you just formed your own hundred-person team, feeling pretty great about yourself, huh?"
At that moment, a soldier stepped forward and broke the awkward silence, "He killed the shapeshifter, can you do that?"
A group of soldiers immediately burst into laughter, as if they had found a release for their frustration, mocking Lucius. Lucius's face turned red all of a sudden, realizing that he had truly embarrassed himself this time.
