Although the man could not be certain whether the mysterious Employer who refused to show their face was the same person as the captured high school student, Lu Xiangyang, simple reasoning led to the conclusion that this mysterious Employer was undoubtedly Lu Xiangyang.
Unlike Jiang Xiaochun, Lu Xiangyang deliberately directed the police's attention towards himself from the very beginning. What was merely a competition in a game was transformed into something shrouded in mystery by Lu Xiangyang, who referred to it as "revenge."
He intentionally used the term "revenge" to capture our attention. When we heard Lu Xiangyang utter the word "revenge," we inevitably associated it with deep sibling bonds. Consequently, we began our investigation focusing on Lu Xiangyang.
During the investigation of Lu Xiangyang, police resources would be divided into two parts, or even more. This would alleviate some of the pressure on Jiang Xiaochun. Such matters are not simply a matter of addition; once a case becomes complex, the police will undoubtedly face influences greater than two.
To ensure that we firmly believed in the early stages that Lu Xiangyang was indeed the Murderer returning for revenge, he first used the word "revenge" to draw our attention.
Secondly, he deliberately booked tickets using his girlfriend's phone, making it easier for us to track his movements. If Lu Xiangyang had used his own phone to book tickets, it would have taken us much longer to discover where he had gone after his disappearance. However, by using his girlfriend's phone, it became much simpler for the police to investigate Lu Xiangyang's relationships.
Coincidentally, a pattern he had doodled on his girlfriend's school uniform inadvertently matched a fluorescent image on the glass that had terrified Luo Ding. This further convinced us that this incident was closely related to Lu Xiangyang. Thus, we focused our attention on him as the most likely person seeking revenge, inadvertently providing a more relaxed environment for the true Murderer.
I believe we all thought this way; those police officers probably thought similarly.
Under Lu Xiangyang's careful arrangement, he directed all suspicious eyes onto himself in the early stages. The police would inevitably follow the trail he had designed, leading them to investigate at the train station. When the investigation began, it became evident that Lu Xiangyang had not gone south but had merely wandered around the train station before leaving.
At this point, all suspicion pointed towards Lu Xiangyang. He had both the time and ability to commit the crime and a motive as well. It was during this time that Jiang Xiaochun began his killing spree. Jiang Xiaochun felt everything was proceeding too smoothly; however, if Lu Xiangyang hadn't actively drawn suspicion onto himself, Jiang Xiaochun might not have found things so easy.
As the killings approached completion, it was time for Lu Xiangyang to prove his innocence. In truth, proving his innocence was merely a matter of time; however, he could not reveal himself and needed someone to rescue him. Ideally, this person would be a police officer.
Aside from the man hired by Lu Xiangyang, no one else knew who he was. In fact, even that man could not distinguish whether Lu Xiangyang was indeed that mysterious Employer. Thus, an unfortunate youth ensnared in a Pyramid Scheme came into being.
Those individuals were indeed part of the Pyramid Scheme; therefore, when someone attempted to escape, they unwittingly performed for Lu Xiangyang without realizing they had already been borrowed by High-Rise at a cost of ten thousand dollars.
Consequently, the police were deceived by such a cunning youth because no one would believe that a seventeen-year-old could possess such deep cunning. After all disguises failed, he still had one final trump card left—one that left us helpless.
My mind raced as I tried to piece everything together; each realization made me feel increasingly cold. I have never hesitated to speculate about others with maximum malice because the darkest aspects of human nature remind us that even if someone's motives stem from love, there will still be dirty and filthy elements present throughout the process.
If my guesses are correct, then we can draw a shocking conclusion. After seven years of silence, has Jiang Xiaochun forgotten about revenge? Was that photograph meant to provoke Jiang Xiaochun? If that image had never appeared, would Jiang Xiaochun have lost the passion for revenge in the mundane life of daily necessities?
But while Jiang Xiaochun may have lost that passion, there is someone else filled with vengeful fervor—none other than Lu Xiangyang, who deeply loved his sister. A person's childhood has a tremendous impact on their entire life, and most mental illnesses are closely tied to childhood experiences.
The love given during childhood also has a significant influence on a person's life. Although the family favored boys over girls and Lu Xiangyang's parents doted on him, material love can never compensate for emotional love; both are indispensable.
It was Lu Zhiqiu who took care of her younger brother Lu Xiangyang. The emotional support and education Lu Zhiqiu provided to her brother far surpassed what their parents could offer. Although ten-year-old Lu Xiangyang might not have understood that his sister had already died—brutally murdered—he gradually came to comprehend what had happened as he grew older.
At that time, Lu Xiangyang was too young; he had never even seen the crime scene and knew little about the events from seven years ago. He only knew that his sister had been cruelly killed but was unaware of the reasons, the perpetrator, or even where Lu Zhiqiu had been murdered.
However, Lu Xiangyang did know that his sister had a close friend. When he was five or six years old, he had met this friend of his sister's. Perhaps children are the most sensitive beings; maybe at that time, Lu Xiangyang sensed that Jiang Xiaochun had feelings for his sister and loved her deeply.
Thus, Lu Xiangyang began investigating Jiang Xiaochun, uncovering more information as he went along. Eventually, he obtained a certain mobile phone. During this investigation, Lu Xiangyang gradually realized that Jiang Xiaochun might also be preparing for revenge. At this point, Lu Xiangyang began to formulate a plan—a plan to use someone else's hand to achieve his goals.
As a minor still attending school, if he left impulsively, others would surely suspect him, and his parents would mobilize all their efforts to find him. As a murderer, such actions would be too conspicuous; Lu Xiangyang decided against it.
He placed the mobile phone in front of Jiang Xiaochun's door. After Jiang Xiaochun received the phone, she would finally begin her own plan.
What Jiang Xiaochun did not know was that everything had been observed by Lu Xiangyang.
All of this is merely my speculation, and I truly cannot understand how someone as intelligent as Jiang Xiaochun could not have suspected anything. A mobile phone appearing out of nowhere at her doorstep—did she not think to investigate? Did she willingly choose to act without question?
This reaction does not align with how one would typically respond upon finding an unexpected phone. When Jiang Xiaochun saw the phone and the image of Lu Zhiqiu, she must have realized someone had deliberately placed it there.
I suddenly slapped my forehead in realization; how could I have missed such an obvious detail? I believe when Jiang Xiaochun saw the phone and the image on it, she understood who had left it there and decided to take action.
Because Jiang Xiaochun understood that there was still someone in this world who wished to avenge Lu Zhiqiu. If such a person existed, it could only be Lu Xiangyang—no one else. Perhaps Jiang Xiaochun grasped this immediately and set about her plans.
This marked a tacit understanding between the two; perhaps from that moment on, they realized they were not alone in their quest for vengeance. However, in the end, Jiang Xiaochun chose to bear all responsibility herself. She understood that if she did not take action soon enough, it wouldn't be long before Lu Xiangyang would take matters into his own hands.
If someone had to take the blame, if someone had to commit murder, if someone had to face justice, then that person could only be Jiang Xiaochun. She did not want Lu Zhiqiu's brother, Lu Xiangyang, to die as well.
Suddenly, I understood the look Jiang Xiaochun had given me on the hillside. I had previously thought it was one of helplessness and sorrow, a complex emotion stemming from being forced to confront the lies and ultimately choosing suicide. But now I realized it was a look of relief, a gaze that signified an end.
Perhaps Jiang Xiaochun had been waiting for this moment when Lu Xiangyang would finally grow up.
Only then could Lu Xiangyang truly let go of his sister's affairs, and Jiang Xiaochun could finally follow Lu Zhiqiu away.
So let everything end with Jiang Xiaochun; perhaps this was a more significant reason for her self-destruction. Someone was held accountable for this matter, and the police could cease their investigation. I wasn't sure if this was Jiang Xiaochun's third lie, but deep down, I leaned towards believing it was.
If Deng Xuemei's death couldn't stop the police from investigating, perhaps her own death could. Who would have thought that behind Jiang Xiaochun was Lu Xiangyang?
Many times, I struggled to understand what love truly is. Was Lu Xiangyang avenging his sister an act of love? Did Jiang Xiaochun's willingness to sacrifice herself to protect Lu Xiangyang count as love? Even Liang Mei's investigation into the murderer to protect her child—could that be considered love?
But if all these actions stemmed from love, why does love lead to murder? Isn't love supposed to be the most beautiful emotion in the world?
Or perhaps love and hate are not about nobility or filth; they are merely fundamental human emotions?
I already knew that all of this was orchestrated by Lu Xiangyang, yet he had not killed anyone. So what should I do now? Should I treat my suspicions as a story to forget, or should I find Lu Xiangyang and expose everything?
How should I choose?
