"Don't move." Liu Gen never expected to find himself in this situation. Not only was he shocked when he first saw Wu Zui's true face, but now the problem was that Guan Zengbin had become one of Wu Zui's people. No matter what he said, in Guan Zengbin's eyes, it would all be seen as Wu Zui's schemes.
In this situation, it seemed better to remain silent. Once the police arrived and we returned to the station, we would eventually uncover the truth.
"Gu Chen, do you remember what I said to you back in your village?" Wu Zui continued speaking beside him.
Our voices were similar, our appearances alike. At that moment, Wu Zui's words were utterly ambiguous. Gu Chen and I couldn't possibly have said nothing in the village, yet Wu Zui didn't specify what those words were. This could easily create a rift between us, leading Gu Chen to subconsciously lean towards a certain inclination.
I knew Wu Zui was quite skilled in psychology.
I wanted to say something, but Liu Dao interrupted: "From now on, neither of you should say a word to me. Whether it's Wu Meng or Wu Zui, since you two are twins, your intelligence must be similar. I know you're both clever and adept at reading others' minds. So to avoid favoring either side, both of you should keep quiet. If either of you speaks even a single word more, I'll consider you as Wu Zui."
With that, Liu shook the gun in his hand. "Don't think I'm joking; my gun doesn't joke around. If you're Wu Meng, believe me when I say I'll find you and bring the other one to justice."
I realized that any effort now would be futile, and finally, Wu Zui fell silent as well.
Liu sighed with relief, glanced at the clock, and said, "There's still some time left. Gu Chen, tie these two up for now; Wu Zui won't be able to escape this time."
Gu Chen bound both of us together with Yinzi.
Liu moved a wooden stool over and sat down, looking at us both. "Wu Zui, you probably didn't expect that from the very beginning, this was all a trap."
Neither of us spoke, but from Liu's words, it seemed he had set up a scheme I was unaware of, and its outcome was finally capturing Wu Zui.
We remained silent as Liu began to talk to himself: "Wu Zui, you're very cunning; you've escaped our capture several times. But you would never have guessed that this has been a trap from the start. Wu Meng, don't blame us; this plan couldn't work without you."
"In seven years' time, Shi Huacheng had to do whatever it took to survive. He couldn't afford to do nothing at all. During these seven years, we learned that Shi Huacheng adopted three children in total. The first child was Zhao Mingkun, a girl who is currently missing; you'll have to ask Wu Meng about her since the last time I saw you two together."
"The second child is Wu Zui, and the third child is Wu Meng," Liu Jixu said. "However, Shi Huacheng previously told us that these two children are of the same age but belong to two different families, and he also provided the names of two completely unrelated individuals. We didn't expect that Shi Huacheng would mix three parts truth with seven parts lies in the information he revealed, and we ended up being misled."
Liu shook his head. "After Wu Zui committed the first crime, we had already started paying attention to you. At first, we thought this method was Zhao Mingkun's doing. But according to our investigation, Zhao Mingkun couldn't have been in Qingcheng at that time. So we realized it must be one of Shi Huacheng's other two children."
"That's when we started noticing Wu Meng," Liu scrutinized both of us. "In the end, Wu Meng turned himself in, but we were puzzled as to why the Murderer targeted Wu Meng. Although we weren't clear on what had happened, we figured that keeping an eye on Wu Meng might prevent the Murderer from taking further action."
With respect shining in Liu's eyes, he continued, "So Captain Shao looked into Wu Meng's background and found it quite suspicious. Captain Shao's keen insight suggested that this matter was far from simple. Moreover, Wu Meng's demonstrated Criminal Profiling abilities astonished Captain Shao. Following Captain Shao's suggestion, we retrieved Wu Meng from the psychiatric hospital."
No wonder I remembered those early days when Liu always looked at me with a particularly strange gaze; I was at the center of a struggle between two factions. This made me feel uneasy and even a bit angry because no one likes to realize they've been kept in the dark.
Liu added, "At that time, Captain Shao had two considerations: first, the Murderer might target Wu Meng, which could serve as a breakthrough for our investigation; second, we could protect Wu Meng's safety to prevent him from being harmed again."
"No matter which of you is Wu Meng," Liu suddenly said, "you should thank Captain Shao. If it weren't for Captain Shao, Wu Meng might have ended up in a mental institution long ago. Your joining our team made it difficult for Wu Zui to act directly against you. Of course, back then we still didn't know who Shi Huacheng's other two adopted children were and never imagined that you two were twins. We certainly didn't think that you, Wu Meng, were one of Shi Huacheng's adopted children."
"So you were protected while we began searching for the children raised by Shi Huacheng," Liu continued. "As we solved more cases, Captain Shao gathered more clues about Wu Zui. Consequently, I developed a habit; after Wu Meng joined us, I started buying lottery tickets continuously."
"Captain Shao crafted a story for me and meticulously played it out. In reality, I was the undercover agent back then, and that Drug Dealer group had long been eradicated. This was a weakness that Captain Shao created for me; he had once been Shi Huacheng's apprentice and understood Shi Huacheng's tactics and weaknesses—one person's greatest vulnerability."
Liu smiled. "So you probably didn't expect that buying lottery tickets was just a ruse to attract your attention. In Liu Yinyan's case, I intended to approach you first but was preempted by Wu Meng, which delayed my contact with you. But none of that mattered; it was your first real encounter with us. From that moment on, your fate was sealed. When you revealed your name, we thought it was just a random choice aimed at targeting Wu Meng. Little did we know you truly were brothers."
"However, we finally faced off directly," Liu sighed. "We just didn't anticipate how formidable you were; you managed to lead all your people away. During that operation, Captain Shao began to suspect there was an insider within the police department. If there wasn't an insider, how could you possibly know about our deployment? How could you devise a strategy to completely evade us?"
"At that point, Captain Shao rarely showed his face because he needed to investigate who among us had betrayed our trust." Liu's gaze was piercing as if he wanted to see through everyone's hearts. "In essence, our Special Operations Group was in the open while your organization operated in the shadows; this put us at a significant disadvantage."
Liu shifted his position as he spoke: "I was left behind because I needed to demonstrate my desire for power and money to draw you into our game. After Liu Yinyan's case concluded, the higher-ups expressed disappointment with the Special Cases Unit; thus our group was reassigned locally. I was supposed to follow along but Captain Shao told me this was actually a great opportunity—an excellent chance."
Liu shrugged. "That's why I joined Captain Li's team. It's really uncomfortable to be suspected by everyone, but I became an undercover agent right after graduating from the police academy. As an undercover agent, I've seen all kinds of situations and endured all sorts of suspicion. Captain Shao entrusted this mission to me because he trusts me. Under the cooperation of Captain Shao and Captain Li, I gradually climbed up the ranks."
"In fact, Captain Shao and Captain Li used to be bunkmates in the police academy; their relationship was so good that they could share a pair of pants," Liu laughed. "But they always give off the impression that they can't stand each other. Although Captain Li's abilities aren't as strong as Captain Shao's, in the grand scheme of things, Captain Li is not someone who would kick someone when they're down."
Liu Jixu continued, "When the Special Operations Group was solving cases locally, Wu Zui Gang finally started to pay attention to me. After several rounds of probing, we began a simple collaboration. Of course, at first, no one trusted anyone, so how could we increase trust? That's when Captain Shao came up with a plan."
"That plan was to make Wu Meng into a murderer." Liu seemed quite pleased with this scheme. "After discussing it with Wu Zui's informant, Wu Zui was very satisfied with the plan, and it was undoubtedly the best gift I could give him. First, it would strengthen Wu Zui's trust in me; second, it would expose my ambitions and make Wu Zui think I was easy to control; third, it would allow the Special Operations Group to operate from the shadows. Originally, once Wu Meng became a Fugitive and went underground, we could arrange for the rest of the action team to follow suit. However, Wu Meng never plays by the rules."
Liu shook his head helplessly. "The design had some flaws; Wu Meng ended up getting involved with Zhao Mingkun. This left us both disappointed and overjoyed because in this plan, Captain Shao could capture both Zhao Mingkun and Wu Zui in one fell swoop. So we took a bit longer with our timing. There was also one more crucial point about this plan, but since it's so important, we'll save that for last."
Liu intentionally left us hanging.
"So Wu Meng, don't take it too seriously thinking we can't catch you. In fact, several times it was Captain Shao who signaled us to let you go so we could fish for bigger prey. We've also warned you multiple times that there are moles within the police department, but you still seem too focused on those around you."
Liu seemed somewhat resigned. "You're still too young. You always think that this note is from me and that I'm the mole. But that's just a facade; whether you guess it or not won't affect the final outcome."
Hearing Liu's words made me recall how he suddenly gave up the chase in the sewer, remember the note about moles in my pocket, and think back to Sister Mao giving me a hundred yuan as a hint about the mole. It turned out everything was under Liu's control—or rather, under Captain Shao's control.
When I thought the Special Operations Group was falling apart, when everyone believed it was disintegrating, it turned out everything was part of Captain Shao's plan.
In this battle of wits and courage, even seemingly trivial matters became cards in determining who would emerge as the ultimate winner.
