The moment Pei Li appeared in the hall, it felt as if the voices of the crowd had quieted down a notch, and all eyes subtly turned toward him.
I carefully followed behind him, taking small steps and gradually creating a bit of distance between us.
Pei Li imperceptibly slowed his pace and eventually stopped, standing still to wait for me.
I had not yet officially introduced myself to everyone, so many people still did not recognize me.
Whispers began to circulate from all directions: "Who is that? Why is she walking with Mr. Pei? He even stopped to wait for her; what could their relationship be?"
"What are you thinking? She looks so young; Mr. Pei could be her uncle. They must be relatives. I wonder which wealthy family she comes from. Maybe we can befriend her and get closer to Mr. Pei."
"Exactly! Since Mr. Pei is taking care of her, they must be related. We should keep our eyes open later; we don't want others to seize the opportunity."
Pei Li stood there waiting for me, his gaze slightly lowered, looking handsome yet relaxed. He didn’t rush me; he simply stood quietly in place.
But even just standing there, he was impossible to ignore.
I froze for a moment before hurriedly lifting my skirt and quickening my pace.
When I finally stood in front of him, the weight of the dress almost caused me to lose my balance.
Pei Li's large hand grasped my wrist while his other arm wrapped around my waist to steady me.
His grip was firm, and the coolness from his hand sent shivers down my spine.
Why are his hands so cold?
In a fluster, I looked up and met Pei Li's icy gaze.
A deep and pleasant voice sounded above me: "Tang Xiaotian, this is the second time you've tripped in front of me."
I hurriedly pulled away from his embrace, annoyed at myself for embarrassing myself twice in front of him, my face starting to heat up. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."
Pei Li glanced at me casually and suddenly raised his hand to lightly pat the back of my head.
I was taken aback. Pei Li lazily said, "No need to apologize. It's not your fault; it's just a reminder to pay attention while walking. Why does a child need to think so much?"
Despite the polite distance on the man's face, I couldn't help but feel a little happy inside.
This Pei Li seemed very different from the rumors.
Wasn't he supposed to be arrogant and cold-blooded, requiring one to tread carefully around him?
Yet, why did I feel that Mr. Pei was particularly gentlemanly?
I smiled and looked up at him. "Got it, thank you, Mr. Pei."
Just as I shifted my gaze away, I accidentally locked eyes with Jiang Huai through the crowd.
His face, which had been perfectly fine this morning, now looked terrifyingly gloomy.
He coldly regarded me with his handsome features, sending a shiver down my spine.
Jiang Huai, why is he angry again?
Throughout the entire banquet that followed, everyone treated me with utmost respect because of Pei Li. My mother told me that he was indirectly acknowledging my identity; from today onward, I was a Jiang Family Member, and no one could make things difficult for me.
I sat in a corner enjoying dessert, my gaze unconsciously drifting toward Pei Li.
He stood out so much, surrounded by a throng of admirers, yet he remained alone in the crowd. His long fingers absentmindedly traced the rim of his glass, a polite smile gracing his lips, but his eyes were distant, as if devoid of any emotion.
Gradually, my gaze shifted elsewhere until it unexpectedly collided with Jiang Huai's brooding stare. He was seated in a corner, surrounded by the boys who had ridden motorcycles with him that day.
Everyone around him was laughing and chatting, but Jiang Huai sat alone, his deep-set eyes fixed on me with an icy glare, a lit cigarette pinched between his fingers.
I quickly averted my gaze but stole another glance at him after a while.
He still looked just as he had moments ago.
So I began to reflect on whether I had inadvertently provoked this young master again.
