My college entrance examination went smoothly, and I now have a long summer vacation.
It was during this summer that I took my first step.
I opened the number I had saved for a long time but had never dialed.
Taking a few deep breaths, I finally dared to press the call button.
I carefully placed my phone to my ear, and after a few beeps, a cold voice came through the receiver: "Hello?"
I was momentarily stunned, unable to react; his voice was so different from how Pei Li usually sounded. The person on the other end was surprisingly cold.
I couldn't help but start to hesitate.
There was the sound of paper rustling on the other end, and the cold voice spoke again: "Hello?"
I thought he was about to hang up and couldn't control my volume: "Pei, Mr. Pei, it's Tang Xiaotian."
There was silence on the line for several seconds, which felt particularly long.
Finally, Pei Li lazily responded, "Hey, Xiao Tian, what's up?"
I stumbled over my words as I explained that I was applying for jewelry design in college, and that the Pei's jewelry design program is among the best in the country. I wanted to learn at the Pei's company.
It should have been a simple matter, but because I was so nervous, my words just wouldn't come out smoothly.
Yet on the other end, Pei Li didn't rush me; he quietly listened as I spoke.
I finally finished speaking, anxiously waiting for his response.
Pei Li's tone was lazy as he said, "It's good that you want to learn. Come in tomorrow."
Was it really that simple?
Joy surged on my face, and my voice was filled with delight as I replied, "Really? But I haven't told Uncle Jiang yet."
Pei Li smiled slightly. "I'll call him. Just come directly tomorrow; my office is on the top floor."
I tightened my grip on my phone, unable to suppress my smile. "Thank you, Mr. Pei."
Pei Li seemed indifferent, casually saying, "You're welcome," and then fell silent.
"Then I won't disturb you any longer, Mr. Pei. I'll hang up now."
Just as I was about to end the call, Pei Li suddenly spoke up. "Xiao Tian."
My heart jumped. "Hmm?" I was afraid something had changed.
To my surprise, Pei Li simply said softly, "Next time you call me, there's no need to be nervous."
My heart raced uncontrollably; those simple words felt like a stone dropped into a lake—seemingly causing no ripples but sinking deep down.
I couldn't help but feel happy. "Got it."
Later, I learned that during that phone call, Pei Li was in a meeting with the company's executives, and he had paused the meeting to take my call.
So, even before I arrived at the company the next day, the executives already knew about the incoming intern with an impressive background because the president had interrupted their meeting to answer the phone.
I discovered that people can be greedy and arrogant when they are favored.
Contrary to my expectations, Pei Li unexpectedly spoiled me, perhaps because of Uncle Jiang.
He set up my studio in his office, building a separate glass partition for me. He could see inside, and I could see outside.
In his work mode, he was particularly fierce, and I finally understood how those rumors about him came to be; when he lost his temper, everyone was afraid of him.
I had seen many senior executives, older than him, not daring to breathe in his presence, and I had witnessed how a single glance from him could make our partners break into a cold sweat.
Yet he seemed especially tolerant of me.
On my first day, Assistant Qin specifically reminded me not to speak loudly in the office or eat anything there, as the president was quite particular about those things.
So on the first day, I didn’t dare to show any displeasure. He thought I was afraid of him, and his expression softened as he told me not to be so restrained.
On the second day of my internship, a small cake appeared on my desk.
I looked at Pei Li in surprise, silently asking him with my eyes.
He cleared his throat awkwardly and said, "Assistant Qin bought it on the side."
From then on, there was a small cake on my desk every day.
I had always known that Pei Li smoked, but since my arrival, he hadn’t opened his cigarette box even once.
I didn’t know if this was his special care for me or just part of his upbringing; either way, I overthought it.
I became a bit spoiled, no longer as restrained as before, and my confidence started to grow.
I would chatter away, asking him a bunch of questions I didn’t understand.
I had never designed jewelry before, hesitating and unsure about how to begin.
Pei Li looked at my little expression, his fingers tapping on the table. "Xiao Tian, when it comes to work, hesitation is the worst enemy."
I stared at him in confusion, and Pei Li chuckled softly, his laughter short and deep, sending a jolt through my heart that felt both electrifying and soothing.
"Hesitation can make you miss many opportunities. Don’t be afraid; just draw whatever comes to mind. I’ll help you get it out there."
What should I do? He was a bit domineering.
Pei Li never held back on praising me. Whenever I made even a little progress, he would tell me like he was comforting a child that I was doing wonderfully.
Few people praised me on my path to growth; everyone called me sensible but forgot that I also needed recognition.
I thought Pei Li might feel a bit differently about me; otherwise, why would he be so patient with me?
