I carried the warm meal to his room, just like I used to when I was a child.
I pushed the door open, and the lights were off inside.
Just as I was about to call out "Brother," before I could even get the words out, Jiang Huai pinned me against the wall.
The impact made my back ache painfully.
"Brother?"
In the darkness, Jiang Huai didn’t respond; he merely pressed his forehead against mine, his eyes tinged with red. "Haven't I spoiled you enough? Why are you still thinking about other men?"
Jiang Huai questioned me repeatedly, his gaze filled with a possessiveness I had never seen before.
Fear gripped me as memories of past events began to connect—when did this all start?
Jiang Huai held onto my shoulders tightly, and it hurt.
I fought against my fear and cautiously asked, "Brother, what's wrong?"
But as soon as the words left my mouth, tears began to flow uncontrollably, dripping onto Jiang Huai's hand.
It was only then that he seemed to snap back to reality, looking at me in a panic.
He reached out as if to wipe away my tears, but before he could touch me, I quickly wiped them away myself.
He asked me gently, "Are you afraid of me?"
I suppressed my trembling and replied, "I'm not afraid."
Jiang Huai suddenly let out a cold laugh, filled with sarcasm. "I'm your brother; that's why you would treat me well."
I furrowed my brows, unsure of what to say. Isn't that right? He is my brother; shouldn't I treat him well?
Jiang Huai abruptly turned around, his voice low and hoarse. "I'm sorry for scaring you. I just need some time alone."
I couldn't shake the feeling that I detected a hint of tears in his voice.
"Brother, remember to eat. I've warmed up your food," I said softly.
I gently closed the door behind me.
The next day, Jiang Huai came downstairs with an expression that showed no signs of yesterday's events, as if nothing had happened at all.
But I could clearly sense the change in him.
From that day on, Jiang Huai transformed.
He became accommodating in everything, no longer losing his temper, taking care of every little thing like a true brother.
It seemed he was starting to accept this role.
Pei Li hadn't come over for dinner in a week.
I heard he was sick, running a high fever.
When Assistant Qin called me, he was so anxious that he could barely get his words out.
I frowned and asked him, "Why didn't you call 120 and instead called me?"
Assistant Qin paused for a second before explaining, "Because the CEO refuses to go to the hospital. He seems to be constantly muttering your name."
My name? What a ridiculous joke.
But I was still worried, so I immediately took a cab to Pei Li's house.
Assistant Qin opened the door for me, and as soon as I arrived, he handed me the keys and left.
So considerate?
I pushed the door open. Pei Li's house was quite large, with only one room slightly ajar.
As I walked in, the sight inside nearly made me nosebleed.
Pei Li was only wearing a bathrobe, slightly open at the chest, with droplets of water sliding down from his chin, past his Adam's apple, and over his chest.
I swallowed hard. How did he manage to keep such a good figure?
Pei Li looked at me with a half-smile and said, "Xiao Tian, you're bleeding."
My face flushed red. Thanks for telling me; I could feel it myself.
I irritably wiped away the blood and said, "Didn't Assistant Qin say you were too sick to move? How come you still have the energy to take a shower?"
When Pei Li heard me refer to him as "you," he paused for a moment and then chuckled self-deprecatingly. "Xiao Tian, have you become distant with me now that you've started dating?"
I frowned and said, "It was Assistant Qin who told me you were sick, so I came."
Pei Li's gaze was deep as he sighed, slowly bending down to meet my eyes. "I really am sick."
As he spoke, he placed my hand on his forehead.
It was so hot; he really was unwell.
"Mr. Pei, why aren't you resting in bed? You should be lying down instead of taking a shower. What if you faint in the bathroom?"
Pei Li's voice was low. "Because I heard you were coming."
I paused, surprised that he had taken a shower just because I was coming.
I pushed that thought aside, not wanting to dwell on it any longer.
"I'm going to call Assistant Qin to take you to the hospital. You have a fever and need to get a COVID test."
Just as I turned to leave, Pei Li reached out and grabbed my wrist.
The air seemed to grow charged with tension, and the sensation of his grip was unusually vivid.
He stared directly at me, and I felt the heat of desire in his eyes.
My gaze fell to his Adam's apple as it moved slightly up and down.
Suddenly, Pei Li lightly brushed his lips against the corner of mine.
My mind went blank; my first kiss! Although it wasn't a proper one.
His gaze darkened, and his voice became hoarse. "Xiao Tian, break up with that guy named Song."
"You investigated him?"
"Heh." Pei Li chuckled lightly, his expression carrying an indescribable playfulness.
He reached out and tucked my hair behind my ear. "I've watched you grow up. He's not right for you; he has some unclear relationship with your school teacher. Xiao Tian, be good; he doesn't deserve you."
"Didn't Mr. Pei say that as long as I like him, that's enough?"
Regret flashed in Pei Li's eyes as he gritted his teeth. "What the hell, I was just being stubborn. Xiao Tian, I don’t even know when it started…"
I pushed his hand away. "I don't understand what Mr. Pei is saying."
With that, I fled in a panic.
My heart raced too fast; staying any longer would definitely expose me.
Was Pei Li suddenly realizing his feelings for me now that I was in a relationship?
How the tables have turned.
