Finally, the afternoon class ended.
Jiang Huai was waiting for me at the classroom door. There was a family gathering at his home today, and he came to pick me up to go back together.
It was the peak time for crowds, and suddenly there was a commotion in front of the playground, accompanied by girls' screams.
My gaze was inevitably drawn to the scene ahead.
As I scanned through the crowd, I suddenly spotted a familiar figure.
The man stood there in a suit, his posture relaxed, holding a small bag and a large pink gummy bear that seemed oddly out of place with his demeanor.
But he appeared unconcerned, carefully protecting the gummy bear.
My heart skipped a beat, and my eyes brightened a little. Pei Li, why hasn’t he left yet?
Pei Li's light brown eyes sparkled with amusement as he openly met my gaze.
Ignoring the shocked expressions around us, he stepped toward me, his smile becoming even more evident.
The crowd was even more astonished; Pei Li was known for his aloofness and innate arrogance, and few had seen him like this, smiling without reservation.
This man, who usually exuded cold detachment, approached me and carefully opened the bag in his hand to reveal a cup of milk tea.
He inserted a straw and handed it to me.
I took it in surprise. "Mr. Pei, you..."
Pei Li paused in unwrapping the candy, his gaze softening as he looked down at me. "Xiao Tian, you should call me 'brother'; otherwise, it would be awkward."
With that, he continued to unwrap the gummy bear with great care.
I held the still warm milk tea and shook it at him. "Brother Pei... why did you think to buy me milk tea? Why didn’t you bring one for my brother too?"
Pei Li glanced at Jiang Huai, whose expression was not very pleasant, and chuckled softly, "I'm pursuing you, not our brother."
With a casual glance at the milk tea I was drinking, the corner of his mouth lifted in a somewhat frivolous manner. "Do you like it? I specifically held a meeting about this; they all said young girls like these things."
I was about to say I liked it when Jiang Huai's cold voice interrupted from the side, "No need for Uncle Pei to worry. Xiao Tian likes what her family will buy for her."
Pei Li raised his eyelids to look at Jiang Huai, letting out a dismissive sound before continuing to unwrap the gummy bear candy.
He spoke leisurely, "Little Jiang, if I call you brother from now on, you shouldn't mind, right?"
Jiang Huai's gaze turned even colder as he stared directly at Pei Li. "You are twelve years older than Xiao Tian. Does Jiang Haotian know?"
Pei Li slowly peeled off the last layer of candy wrapper. "I already mentioned that Uncle Jiang only scolded me with 'beast' after seeing your face and accepted this matter."
The mention of "Uncle Jiang" completely blurred the lines of their generational relationship.
Jiang Huai's expression grew increasingly grim.
Meanwhile, Pei Li seemed oblivious to it all as he leaned closer to me with the gummy bears in hand. "Little one, it's my first time pursuing someone too. If there's anything I'm not doing right, you have to tell me, okay?"
His melodious voice seeped into my heart, both sweet and tingling, making me forget that I had just called him a liar not long ago.
We were so close that I could see my reflection clearly in his eyes. The scent of wood gradually enveloped me, causing my heartbeat to quicken involuntarily.
What should I do? No matter how many times I warned myself, I still found myself falling for Pei Li. He could easily lead me by the nose, yet I seemed… quite happy about it.
Seeing that I hadn’t responded, Pei Li’s nervousness became increasingly evident.
I took a sip of milk tea and smiled as I spoke, "Alright."
Upon receiving my answer, Pei Li seemed to relax instantly. His tone turned particularly serious. "Don't rush; you can reject me appropriately. I need to follow the plan and complete the entire process."
Jiang Huai scoffed disdainfully.
Pei Li raised an eyebrow, stood up straight with his hands in his pockets, and casually glanced at Jiang Huai. His gaze lingered on the backpack behind Jiang Huai that was meant for me.
With a swift motion, he naturally lifted my backpack from Jiang Huai's shoulders and slung it over his own.
The weather that day was exceptionally nice. Holding a cup of milk tea, I walked ahead with a light step, my shadow stretching long under the sun.
Pei Li and Jiang Huai followed behind me, looking quite friendly.
I wasn't sure if I had misheard, but Jiang Huai lowered his voice and quietly muttered to Pei Li, "So shameless."
Pei Li chuckled lightly, his gaze fixed on my cheerful figure. "Xiao Tian."
I turned back. "Hmm?"
"Slow down a bit."
"Okay."
The innocent affection of youth is beautiful yet bittersweet, filled with unspoken words. Perhaps everyone clumsily loves the person hidden in their hearts in their own way. That seemingly hopeless crush became the biggest gamble of my adolescence.
