Next to the Public Security Bureau, a bank was opened with a hefty investment of 4,000 yuan. Who could have predicted that he would become an overnight millionaire? Within just a week of opening, he had swindled over 3 million yuan in deposits, counting money until his hands cramped. Even many police officers had deposited significant amounts there.
The fake bank was more convincing than a real one; it was not only luxuriously decorated and well-equipped but also provided exceptionally professional service. Even the employees inside were unaware that it was a sham. When the police arrived to investigate, they found themselves deep in thought, exclaiming how incredibly professional it all seemed.
When staff from the China Construction Bank visited, they were equally astonished by the appearance of the establishment.
So how did this genius from Shandong manage to pull it off? What inspired him to open a fake bank?
Location of the incident: Linyi City, Shandong Province, Lanling County.
On July 24, 2015, the main street of Aiqiu Village was filled with the sounds of drums and firecrackers as many people gathered to watch. The villagers were all very happy—how could such an unprecedented event happen in their midst?
It turned out that the long-awaited China Construction Bank Aiqiu Village Branch had finally opened.
Previously, villagers had to travel to the county seat to deposit money, which took about an hour and a half by bus. Now that a bank had opened in their village, it made saving and withdrawing money much more convenient, and the villagers were overjoyed.
However, some villagers with a strong sense of fraud awareness began to wonder why a bank would open in such a remote and impoverished area. Did they suddenly have too much money with nowhere to spend it?
Despite their concerns, the presence of a police station right next door reassured them.
To attract more customers to deposit money, President Zhang announced that they had secured opening benefits: the first 100 villagers who deposited at least 1,000 yuan would receive free eggs, rice, and cooking oil.
The allure of free gifts was hard to resist; who wouldn’t be tempted?
The elderly villagers could hardly contain their excitement as they rushed to the bank's entrance, forming long lines. On the very first day of its opening, the bank received deposits totaling 500,000 yuan.
Seeing everyone’s trust in him made President Zhang feel grateful for his loyal customers.
He told the villagers that he had consulted with his superiors and extended the benefits for another three days.
In no time, word spread throughout the village, and villagers from surrounding areas flocked here to deposit their money. Each person left with bags full of gifts, returning home in high spirits.
However, as some deposited money, others came to withdraw it, only to encounter strange occurrences. Whenever they tried to take out their money, President Zhang would refuse them for various reasons.
At this point, the villagers began to murmur among themselves. How could there be a bank where you could only deposit but not withdraw?
A bank is not a toy. But then President Zhang's words dispelled their concerns.
President Zhang addressed the villagers, "Have you seen the name of our bank? Do you think such a large bank would care about your small change?"
He continued, "And right next door is the Public Security Bureau. Who would dare to openly commit such a dishonest act against the people?"
He proclaimed loudly, "Chinese people do not deceive Chinese people!"
Upon hearing this, the villagers felt reassured; after all, the Public Security Bureau was nearby, and no one would be bold enough to act so recklessly.
Thus, merchants from the nearby market also came to deposit their money. To thank the villagers for their strong support, President Zhang promised to secure the highest interest rates for their families.
In addition, whenever he had free time, President Zhang would take counterfeit bills and educate the surrounding villagers to prevent them from accidentally depositing fake money. He also reminded them to download anti-fraud software.
In just a few days, he became close with the villagers; he could easily spend an entire day and night chatting with any family he visited.
The person with whom President Zhang had the best relationship was the village's wealthiest man, Liu Baige. One day, President Zhang approached Brother Baige and mentioned that his superiors had given him a daunting task.
He was short by 40,000 yuan. Upon hearing this, Brother Baige, who considered himself a good friend of President Zhang, couldn't just stand by and do nothing. "What's going on?" he asked. "You want 50,000 but only need 40,000?"
After depositing the money, Baige smiled and said, "You are a nice person. I will send you a banner someday." But a few days later, Baige found that something was wrong, because there was a problem in his store and he needed money to turn around, so he found his good friend President Zhang. But President Zhang actually shirked his responsibility with various reasons. Some said that it was a crisis and the network was not connected, or that the machine was not working well, or for other reasons, anyway, he could not withdraw money. Although Baige had some doubts, he thought that President Zhang treated him like a brother, so he would not deceive him, right? Then he decided to take the passbook to the county town to withdraw some money for emergency. But when he gave the passbook to the bank staff, the staff's answer made Baige feel like a bolt from the blue, and his cerebellum shrank. He had heard of fake cigarettes, fake alcohol, and fake friends before, but now there are fake ones in the bank, which he never expected. Then he quickly called the police. After receiving the call, the police were also stunned, because many people in the station had deposited money there. Then the police quickly went to the bank next door to investigate, but no matter how they looked, they could not see any flaws in this bank. Not only was the decoration exactly the same as the real bank, but the walls were also covered with rules and regulations, and there were three uniformed staff members. Seeing this scene, even the staff of Construction Bank who accompanied the police to investigate called themselves experts. At that time, the staff of China Construction Bank in the county went there and saw that this situation was indeed surprising from the appearance. But the staff of Construction Bank still found something wrong, so they asked the staff in the fake bank. It turned out that the three of them were college students who had just graduated from the finance major, and one of them was the daughter of President Zhang, and the other two were relatives who spent 10,000 yuan to get in. But when faced with the police's questioning, the three said that they all relied on their real abilities to pass formal exams to enter the bank, and they also said that this was definitely not a fake bank. Then the three of them had a serious dispute with the police, but after a detailed investigation, it was found that the bank was indeed a fake bank. After everyone learned about the situation, everyone was confused and worried that President Zhang would be beaten to death by the villagers, so the police quickly took him to the police station for questioning. According to President Zhang, it was not right.
According to Zhang's account, he had been a genius since childhood. He dropped out of middle school and started a furniture factory with his relatives. Initially, their factory achieved some success, but Zhang had a peculiar habit of misappropriating funds to gamble.
In the end, not only did the furniture factory go bankrupt, but he also accumulated a debt of over two million.
He initially planned to take out a loan from the bank to make a comeback, but since he had no property under his name and was burdened with so much debt, the bank was hesitant to lend him money. Giving him a loan would be like throwing a meat bun to a dog—once gone, it would never return.
Although he couldn't secure a loan, this opened up new avenues of thought for him.
He realized that if banks could open for deposits, why couldn't he? A bold idea began to take shape in his mind.
After several days of observation, he discovered that there was a Vegetable Wholesale Market next door with heavy foot traffic and located away from the city center. If he opened a bank there, many people would likely come to deposit their money.
So, without hesitation, Zhang deceived the landlord into believing he was an executive at a bank and rented a storefront near the market at a low price.
He then hired people to renovate the place, perfectly replicating the China Construction Bank. Remarkably, he spent not a single penny on the renovations because he had tricked both the construction team and suppliers into believing they would be reimbursed by the bank once it was operational.
Zhang told them that after the bank was completed, he would submit expenses for reimbursement to headquarters. However, by the time he was arrested, he had yet to settle any of those debts.
Later statistics revealed that over 300 people had been deceived, with the total amount involved exceeding three million yuan.
If it hadn't been for Baige's urgent need for cash, Zhang's fake bank might have soon become a real one.
Ultimately, Zhang was sentenced to five years in prison for fraud.
