When I returned home, I saw my father standing at the door with a grim expression on his face. Inside the house, there was a group of relatives that my father had called over. When he saw the sumptuous food I had brought back for him, he was filled with anger but dared not express it.
If it weren't for the inappropriate occasion, I would have loved to capture that expression on camera as a keepsake. After all, I had rarely seen my father look like that.
Before I could fully process his expression, he began to put on a show. He pretended to wipe away tears. "Ah, you young ones just don't understand," he lamented. "These are the marks left by my past life. Now that life is better, you all have forgotten the days of hardship."
"You really don’t know how to cherish what you have," he continued, wiping away more tears. The relatives exchanged puzzled glances, unsure of what performance my father was putting on this time. It was Aunt who finally broke the silence. "Elder Brother, what's wrong with you? Why are you crying all of a sudden?"
As he cried, my father called for someone to bring out his old clothes that had been packed away. "You don’t know; I used to live in poverty," he said. "Seeing these old clothes reminds me of those times. Now that I'm wearing such nice clothes, I've forgotten the hardships of the past—it's truly shameful."
With that, he picked up a tattered piece of clothing and put it on.
Watching my father's actions, the others present were also reminded of the past and began to share their own stories of hardship. By the time everyone had finished speaking, my father had already put on the tattered clothes.
Seeing him in such a state, I suddenly spoke up. "Since you’re so nostalgic, Dad, why don’t we return these new clothes?" As I said this, I took back the brand-new clothes I had originally given him.
My father's sobs abruptly stopped. He quickly blocked my way. "How can that be?"
"We've already bought them, so let's not return them," he insisted. "It would be such a hassle for them."
I looked at him teasingly. "But Dad, didn’t you say you’re used to being frugal? Aren't these new clothes uncomfortable for you?"
"I think we should return these new clothes and get some old ones instead," I suggested. "After all, you’re so frugal that you must not like wearing new clothes."
This left my father speechless. It wasn't that he disliked wearing new clothes at all. In the past, he was reluctant to buy them, but every time I bought him something new, he was overjoyed.
This time, he was deliberately wearing tattered clothes just to make a point. My brother, seeing that our father was at a disadvantage, immediately stepped in to support him.
"Sister, how can you say that?" he exclaimed. "A gift for Dad shouldn’t be returned so casually!"
"It's his choice to want to be frugal," he continued. "As children, we shouldn’t think like that."
Father found his support and straightened his back.
"Yes, your brother is right."
"I don't agree with returning it."
I chuckled lightly.
"Brother, do you feel the same way?"
"Then why don't you take back the Ginseng Wine you just gave Dad?"
"After all, Dad is so frugal; he definitely wouldn't want to drink it."
"How about we let everyone have a taste?"
Brother's expression changed instantly.
Father's face shifted from pale to flushed and back again.
Everyone present knew that Brother had just given Father two bottles of Ginseng Wine.
However, as soon as they arrived home, Brother had secretly taken the Ginseng Wine back to the car.
Everyone was aware of this; they just hadn't spoken about it.
I didn't expect to be the one to bring it up first.
The looks directed at Brother and Father from those present were tinged with disdain.
Father was instantly furious and embarrassed.
"You ungrateful daughter!"
"I raised you with great difficulty, and this is how you repay me?"
Aunt immediately stepped in to defend me.
"Oh dear, big brother, calm down."
"The young ones don't understand."
"Why bother arguing with her?"
"Quarreling with the younger generation is beneath your dignity."
Dad and Brother sat down on the sofa, looking sheepish amidst everyone's laughter.
