Cui Xinghai sighed, "In our place, there's a tradition. During the wedding night, the groom is supposed to get drunk and then be carried to the bride's bed to see if he can be caught in the act the next day."
"And then?" I asked.
"Then, to protect her own reputation, the bride will send the groom to the next room," Cui Xinghai explained. "If the bride doesn't love the groom, she might get him drunk and send him to someone else's bed."
"Is that what happens during the wedding night?" I widened my eyes in disbelief.
"Yes," Cui Xinghai nodded. "We originally planned to follow this tradition, but who would have thought that Bao Lan would do something like that..."
"I..." I was completely at a loss for words. It dawned on me why Bao Lan had said such things; she must have known about this custom all along! I was relieved they hadn't done anything more outrageous, or I would have been utterly embarrassed.
Half a month later, in front of the newly renovated house, Bao Lan and I stood at the door, feeling a mix of emotions. Bao Lan's mother had been waiting at the entrance with a suitcase beside her.
"Open the door!" Bao Lan's mother called out loudly. "I'm here to stay with my daughter; why are you still hesitating?"
"What...?" I stared blankly at Baolan's mother.
"Mom, what are you doing here?" Baolan looked just as confused.
"I told you, didn't I? I'm here to stay with my girl," Baolan's mother said loudly.
"Hurry up and open the door, I've been waiting forever!"
"Oh." Baolan nodded and then opened the door.
I followed closely behind the mother and daughter as we entered the room.
The smell of the house was quite pungent, but Baolan and her mother seemed unfazed.
"Tell me, why did you cheat?" Baolan suddenly turned around, looking at me coldly.
"I..." I was momentarily at a loss for words.
"On your wedding night, you made a mistake and cheated after marriage. You should leave with nothing!" Baolan said sharply.
"Baolan, don't go too far!" I couldn't help but shout, "I didn't cheat!"
"Didn't cheat? Then what is this?"
Baolan pulled out her phone and played a video.
In the video, on Ma Gui Fang's birthday, she was passionately kissing me in the room!
"You!" I was instantly speechless.
"Got nothing to say now?" Baolan sneered, "If you don't admit it, I'll just bring in a witness!"
"Alright! You look for it!" I nodded and took out my phone, dialing Ma Gui Fang's number.
"Manager Ma, my new house is renovated. Do you have time to come and take a look?" I asked.
"Sure," Ma Gui Fang replied readily.
After hanging up, I called Cui Xinghai next.
I also called the front desk of Baolan's company.
"Is this Chen Wang?" I asked. "Do you have time tonight? I'd like to invite you to dinner."
"Sure," Chen Wang also agreed readily.
After making those two calls, I let out a sigh of relief.
"What are you doing?" Baolan looked at me coldly.
"Aren't you looking for someone to confront?" I sneered, "I've called someone too."
"Who?" Baolan asked.
"You know him," I replied lightly.
Then, Baolan began her performance.
"Chen Wang, let me ask you, what did you see that day?" Baolan asked coldly.
"I saw..." Chen Wang hesitated.
"Speak!" Baolan said sharply.
"I saw..." Chen Wang hesitated again, "I saw them hugging each other..."
"You!" I widened my eyes, staring in shock at Chen Wang.
