Rao Jie hadn't heard such a tone in a long time, and she felt a bit dazed. She lifted her head, and in an instant, her gaze was captured by the other person's eyes, causing her to nod reflexively.
"Why? Do you want to study economics more deeply?"
Rao Jie didn't understand how the conversation had shifted to this point. "Because getting a master's degree makes it easier to find a job, and the starting salary will be higher. Besides, everyone else is taking the exams."
Wu Rong scoffed lightly, his charming eyes revealing a different glimmer.
Rao Jie was already feeling uneasy, and the seemingly disdainful look ignited something within her that felt uncontrollable. The path to graduate school had been so challenging that she was on the verge of breaking down. She had been trying hard to adjust herself, preparing for the entrance exams.
Continuing her studies had always been the path she insisted on. For years, she had believed this was the right choice. Once a road is taken, isn't perseverance to the end a quality one should possess? Why did it suddenly seem foolish in Wu Rong's eyes?
Yet deep down, Rao Jie felt as if she understood something, though she was unwilling to admit it.
"Professor Wu wouldn't understand the mindset of ordinary people like us. We aren't like you, who seem to possess a mind capable of changing the world, with capital that allows for arrogance. You can do what you love while ensuring your livelihood. Most people are like me; we just want to study steadily, find a good job with decent income, have a simple romance, and eventually settle down and start a family. Life is that simple for us; we only need to worry about mundane matters. We can't be extraordinary; we can only be part of the masses. But most of this world is made up of people like us..."
As Rao Jie spoke, tears streamed uncontrollably down her face. Her voice grew hoarse as if she needed to vent through this matter—her anxiety, her grievances, her confusion.
Was the repeatedly obstructed path correct? Should she continue? She didn't know! She had always thought the road she chose was right, but Wu Rong seemed to completely deny it. What was she supposed to do?
Rao Jie poured out her frustrations.
Wu Rong was stunned... He hadn't even started speaking when Rao Jie broke down first. He truly hadn't expected her to cry like this.
Seeing Rao Jie so agitated made Wu Rong regret his timing; he shouldn't have brought this up now when her previous wounds hadn't healed yet. By repeatedly denying her thoughts, he had effectively denied her entirely.
Wu Rong quickly stepped forward and pulled Rao Jie into his embrace with concern.
Rao Jie became frustrated and tried to struggle, but both of them ended up sitting on the sofa. Wu Rong held her tightly, and after a while, Rao Jie grew tired of fighting back. She naturally leaned into Wu Rong's embrace, her hand moving to his back as she weakly hit it in a fit of frustration. She mumbled something under her breath, as if unable to express all the grievances she felt.
Wu Rong could only hold her in silence, allowing her tears to soak his shirt. Eventually, Rao Jie fell asleep right there in his arms. All the emotions she had bottled up finally erupted at once; she was exhausted—truly exhausted.
Rao Jie slept soundly, not waking even when Wu Rong carried her back to the room. He gently laid her down and helped her out of her outer clothes, wiping away the tears on her face. It was the first time Wu Rong had taken such meticulous care of someone; he felt clumsy yet cherished every moment, handling her with utmost caution.
