"Bug?" I looked around; the room was very clean, and there were no bugs in sight!
Chen Siyuan's face turned even paler as he nodded. "Wheat, your husband might know about this. Can you call him?"
Su Anrong?
Oh? That's right! With such a commotion, how come Su Anrong hasn't shown up? This doesn't make sense!
"Wait a moment, I'll go get him."
I hurried back to my room, but there was no sign of Su Anrong anywhere!
No way, did he just leave like that?
Garlic! Come out, I miss you!
I kept repeating this in my head, but no one responded.
I began to feel that something was off.
Since the night of the full moon was so special for Rice, it might be special for Su Anrong as well, right? Could something have happened to him?
Suddenly, I felt an inexplicable tension in my heart. I didn't dare to think further and quickly went to find Rice.
Although he had become somewhat terrifying lately, I had no choice but to brace myself.
When I opened the door to Rice, I was met with a massive, white, bun-like object completely blocking the entrance, leaving not even a crack.
I cautiously poked at the thing with my finger; it was soft and bouncy! It was alive! Could it really be... Rice?
"Rice, Rice, wake up!" I continued to prod him.
No response.
"Rice, wake up!" I gave him another gentle nudge.
Still nothing.
I gritted my teeth, raised my fist, and started pounding away. "Rice, wake up! Your dad is missing!"
"Wheat, what’s wrong now?" My mom's voice came from next door as she poked her head out, clearly disturbed by the noise.
I quickly shut the door and forced a silly grin. "It's nothing, nothing. Mom, I'm just a bit tired and wanted to shake off some drowsiness before going to hang out with Siyuan!"
"If you really can't manage, just go to sleep. I'll keep Xiao Chen company."
Ah, she's such a caring mom!
"No need for that!" I hurriedly pushed her back inside. "Mom, just get some good rest! Even if there's a murder outside, don’t come out!"
Finally managing to send my mom away, I felt some movement behind the door. I quickly opened it again and saw that the large white object inside seemed to be slowly shifting. After a while, it finally stopped moving, and I noticed three long slits appear on its surface, two of which opened...
"Wow! That scared the hell out of me!"
"Don't tell me that those pitch-black, bowl-sized things are eyes!"
Seeing me so frightened that I almost fell to the ground, those two eyes quickly closed again. Then the slit below opened up, revealing a mouth as big as a basin that opened and closed: "Mommy, did I scare you?"
Although I had already guessed it was Rice, I still found it hard to accept. But now, hearing him ask that and looking at his tightly shut eyes because he was afraid of scaring me, I held back my fear and looked at his gaping mouth, saying, "No, no! I'm not that easy to scare! I just tripped and fell."
"Mommy, I can't reach out my hand right now; you have to get up by yourself!"
"Of course! Why would I need help?" I jumped up. "Rice, your daddy is missing. Do you know where he went?"
"Mommy, are you missing Daddy? Unfortunately, I can't turn into him today..."
"Stop. I do need to find him urgently, but he's gone, and his phone isn't in service. Can you contact him?" Why do I feel my face getting a bit hot? Why am I blushing for no reason?
"That's not possible. It seems today is the day Daddy has to return to the Underworld. If he goes there, a lot of annoying guys will come looking for trouble with him; he might be tied up."
"Oh." I felt a bit disappointed. "Then forget it!"
I hope the Lizard Spirits can manage to guard the windows properly.
"Mommy, what's going on? I think I just heard that flat-chested ghost calling for help."
"It's nothing, Rice. You're not in a good position right now; just rest well! I'll call you if there's anything!"
As I was about to close the door, Rice suddenly said, "Mommy, remember I got a lot of medicine from Helena? I gave all that medicine to Grandma, including a bottle of green stuff, the Soul Cleansing Water. You can carry it with you. A lot of ghosts will come out looking for food tonight. If they come after you, just splash them with the Soul Cleansing Water. It's okay, don't worry about it. I'll ask the herbalist to work overtime and make more!"
"No need for that; Grandma needs it more than I do." If any ghosts came after them, I really wouldn't know what to do.
Without Su Anrong around, I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if there were eyes watching me from all directions.
After a moment of silence, Rice's body suddenly began to tremble lightly.
I was startled. "Stop moving! You'll shake the house down!"
Rice squeezed out a small bottle from by the door, and it turned out to be the Spiritual Eye he had shown me in the elevator!
"Mommy, this is the only bottle of medicine I have left, and it's the highest quality made by Helena. You should take it! It can help protect you from ghosts!"
"What? Eat it? Just looking at those white eyeballs makes me want to vomit! There's no way I'm eating that!"
"Mommy, don’t judge it by how scary it looks; it actually has a nice crunchy and slippery texture! Just close your eyes and swallow it! This Spiritual Eye is something many ghosts covet. Helena didn’t even know who she was making it for, but now it's ours!"
Child, please don’t take things from ghosts so casually.
I shivered. "No matter how good it tastes, I'm not eating it!" I forcefully closed the door. Instead of wasting time here, I'd rather go spend time with Chen Siyuan.
"Wheat!" Chen Siyuan looked worriedly out the window. "Are you sure it's okay to leave them there?"
"It's fine; they're two Lizard Spirits who almost ate me!" I whispered into her ear. "But now they're my bodyguards—right?" I stretched my neck toward them.
"Yes! Queen!"
Chen Siyuan looked at me speechlessly and then changed the subject. "So, where's your husband?"
"He... went out for something. Siyuan, can you tell me what this ring on your hand is about?" I wondered if it was also transformed by Su Anrong.
Thinking of this, I instinctively hid the hand wearing the ring. What was this inexplicable sour feeling?
"I'm not too sure either. Your husband said I had to wear this ring; otherwise, I wouldn't be able to stay in the human world. You know, this ring is really magical. After I put it on, I can't tell the difference between myself and a living person! Wheat, what kind of person is your husband?"
"Genius knows what he is." Damn Su Anrong, giving everyone this kind of ring as if it were mass-produced! Why couldn't she just transform another style for her after seeing so many that day?
"Wheat, what's wrong with you?"
"Ah, nothing." I quickly smiled. Oh my, was my expression that obvious? "Siyuan, you should go to sleep; I'll keep watch over you!"
"You really think I need to sleep? Ghosts don’t need sleep!" She laughed.
"Then why didn't you let me sleep with you just now?"
"That was to let you two enjoy your time together!" She winked suggestively.
"Get lost!" I cursed, feeling suddenly enlightened. Since she said that, it must mean I was overthinking about the ring. "In that case, you can keep watch while I sleep!"
That night finally calmed down. For some reason, those bugs didn’t come looking for Chen Siyuan again. With two lizards and one ghost guarding me, I slept soundly.
Early in the morning, my parents went out to sell vegetables, and to my surprise, there was breakfast already prepared in the restaurant! Although it was just two eggs, they were already peeled, which was quite a rarity for me!
You see, my mom has to wake up very early for her vegetable stall and has never made me breakfast before. This was truly a rare occurrence!
As I was marveling at this unexpected treat, Rice came out of the kitchen holding a glass of milk. "Mommy! Quickly try the breakfast I made for you!"
He still looked like a little prince, completely different from that strange White Giant from yesterday.
"You made this?" I exclaimed, nearly dropping my jaw in disbelief.
"Of course! You're the only one here who needs to eat, so all of this is for you!"
Having a son really is wonderful!
I happily ate my breakfast, with milk in one hand and an egg in the other. Life was truly delightful!
"Mommy, how is it? I made it with the skin I shed last night. Tasty, right?"
"Ugh—" I spat out everything I had swallowed and still felt queasy in my stomach.
Rice, I hate you!
"Mommy, this is all very good stuff! Humans can ward off evil by eating it, and demons can enhance their spiritual power! It’s not often that I shed like this—hey, you two! Spit that out!" Rice was explaining when he noticed that the Lizard Spirits had already excitedly picked up the eggs I had thrown on the ground. Each one took an egg and swallowed it whole.
"Thank you, Queen! Thank you, Young Master!" they said as they smacked their lips and hid behind me.
Due to moving late yesterday, I hadn't managed to unpack many things. I was exhausted, panting alongside a few non-human companions, and it wasn't until the afternoon that we finally got the house in decent shape.
Usually, my parents would return from grocery shopping around eight or nine in the evening, but today they came back just after three.
My mother's gaze seemed a bit off, especially when she looked at Chen Siyuan. During the move yesterday, Chen Siyuan had been very proactive and strong, which my parents appreciated greatly. They even said they wanted her to stay with us for a few more days.
My mother's eyes had an unusual intensity when she looked at Chen Siyuan. Even I felt a prickling sensation on my back.
While preparing dinner, my mother called Chen Siyuan into the kitchen for help. I quickly intervened, saying, "Mom, let me handle it. She's our guest and has already helped us clean up all day!"
"You cut those potato strips like sticks; how can anyone eat that? Xiao Chen, come help Auntie out!"
Without hesitation, Chen Siyuan went into the kitchen. However, I couldn't shake off a sense of unease; it felt like something bad was about to happen.
Who would have thought I was right!
Less than ten minutes after Chen Siyuan entered the kitchen, a sudden scream pierced through the air: "Ah—" It startled me so much that I jumped up from the sofa.
