I couldn't believe it; she didn't even admit that she should have recorded the evidence.
Chen Siyuan also seemed a bit troubled. After all, she had never truly caught a ghost and had no idea what skills came with being a ghost herself. Someone walked towards the back mountain, and I turned to look at her, only to have Qiao Ziyuan pull my head back.
"Isn't your talisman supposed to bind ghosts? Why did it also bind people?" I asked curiously.
"Because these people have ghosts in their hearts. If their hearts are not guilty, then the ghosts have no chance to possess them. However, their children can move freely within their bodies, which indicates that each of them harbors a ghost inside. If someone has never done anything wrong or harbored ill intentions, the ghost cannot possess them. Little girl, you’re smiling so widely that your front teeth are showing. What’s making you so happy?" Qiao Ziyuan looked surprised, as if afraid I might eat her.
I felt embarrassed and said, "It seems I’m someone who has neither done anything wrong nor harbored bad intentions. Yesterday, I tried to let Siyuan possess me, but she just couldn’t."
"Sometimes there’s no other reason; it’s just that you’re too foolish, so nothing works."
Auntie, is it really okay to be so discouraging?
I realized that my eloquence was completely useless in front of Qiao Ziyuan; she left me speechless. But how could Qiao Lianjiu be her son and still look so foolish?
"Little girl, aren’t you able to see ghosts? Go check one by one; eliminate those who haven’t been possessed. For those who have been possessed, just stick this talisman back on them." She handed me a stack of talismans, each one drawn exactly the same way, even the strokes were identical. No matter how I looked at them, they seemed like photocopies.
This stack of talismans was labeled "Roll, Little Ghost."
"Auntie, are you really a descendant of the Ghost-catching Family?" I was utterly speechless at her ghostly drawings.
Qiao Ziyuan paused for a moment and looked herself up and down. "Do I really not look like one? Sigh, I should have listened to my father and worn a yellow robe. But I really like white; it feels ethereal and hard to give up."
"I’m not talking about your clothing; it’s just that your talismans are drawn so poorly that I can hardly bear to look at them. Did you really draw these yourself? They look printed to me."
"Of course they’re printed! Are you silly? Why would I waste effort drawing them?"
""
"Alright, little girl, stop asking questions. You’re not going to be my daughter-in-law anyway. If you keep asking, I might accidentally reveal the secrets of the Qiao Family. Go check now; be careful! If you tear the wrong one, don’t blame me."
"Auntie, this is too much pressure for me! I don’t know how to check!" Wasn’t I supposed to be the assistant? It felt more like I was leading the charge.
But as an ordinary person, how could I argue with a ghost-catching descendant? Reluctantly, I took those ghostly drawings and walked towards the parents. After a few steps, I couldn’t help but turn back and ask, "Auntie, what does 'Roll, Little Ghost' mean?"
"It means exactly what it says: make them roll away," Qiao Ziyuan replied while lighting incense.
"However, what you wrote is 'roll over' in Ghost Hunter, please take it seriously."
Qiao Ziyuan quickly grabbed the remaining talismans on the table and exclaimed, "Oh no, I printed it wrong! I emphasized so many times that it must not be printed incorrectly!"
"Auntie, are you joking with me?"
Seeing my troubled expression, Qiao Ziyuan comforted me, "It's okay, little girl, don't worry. It's all about rolling; it's just a different way of rolling. You can stick it without worry."
How can I feel at ease with that?
I cautiously approached the first parent. She was a slightly plump woman with a fierce-looking face, clearly someone who wouldn't back down in an argument.
I stared at her for about a minute and noticed she had many freckles on her face, some blackheads on her nose, and the gold necklace around her neck was fake. I could also see that her chest was somewhat sagging and she had three rolls of fat around her waist.
But I really couldn't tell if she was possessed or not.
"Rice, can you see anything?"
Rice shook his head. "Mommy, I think we should call Daddy over."
"Daddy said he can't come in and out of our school freely right now. Is he being confined by someone?"
"Who would dare to confine Daddy? He’s always the one who confines others! My Daddy is the strongest!" Rice spoke of Su Anrong with admiration.
"Sigh," I sighed. "Forget it; since I can't tell anything, let's just tear it off randomly." After all, they were just some newly dead spirits; there was nothing to fear even if I tore it wrong.
I gritted my teeth and tore off the talisman from the woman's forehead. She suddenly seemed to wake up from a dream, opening her eyes and looking around. "What happened? What's going on?"
"It's nothing, Auntie. Please stand aside and rest for a moment; go light three sticks of incense for your child."
I began to look at the second person. The second person was a man; he should be this woman's husband. I quickly called out to the woman who was about to leave: "Auntie, is this your husband?"
"Yes... no," she reflexively replied before immediately changing her answer.
I was momentarily confused. "So is he or isn't he?"
The woman's eyes darted around cunningly as if she understood something and hurriedly said, "Ah, yes, yes! He is my man. Please wake him up too!"
"Since that's the case, this talisman can't be torn. One of the couple must be possessed, and since you aren't, it must be your husband," I said as I walked toward the third person.
To my surprise, the woman suddenly ran over and grabbed my hand, saying, "Miss, he isn't actually my husband."
"Are you kidding me?" I replied, feeling a bit irritated. I had important matters to attend to and no time for her nonsense.
The woman lowered her head, looking somewhat embarrassed. She spoke softly, "Sometimes I do call him my husband. You’re just a child; you wouldn’t understand. But he isn’t my real husband. My husband is over there." She pointed to a tall man.
I was taken aback. "You cheated on him?"
"Don't say it like that! What cheating? I'm very loyal to my family. It's just that sometimes I want to have some fun. You know how it is—eating steamed buns every day gets boring; sometimes I crave rice."
Before she could finish her sentence, she froze in place as Rice angrily slapped a binding talisman on her forehead. "I don't want you eating anything; it makes me sick!"
"Rice, she wasn't referring to you when she mentioned rice. Don't get upset! But you're right; keep her there. Since this isn't her husband, let me tear this talisman and see what happens." As I spoke, I tore off the talisman from the second man's forehead.
The moment I pulled it off, regret washed over me because his eyes opened wide and were bloodshot.
