Lu Jin chose a Western restaurant.
He was indeed not good with words, and a hint of nervousness showed as he held the menu, his sharp lips trembling slightly. Then, he crossed his legs and sat down in front of me.
I couldn't help but send a message to my best friend: [Why does he have two faces in front of people?]
[Didn’t you say he talks a lot? He hasn’t said a word and seems a bit nervous. He really hasn’t dated before!]
Lu Fu replied almost instantly: [Is he pretending? He doesn’t usually act like this! Let me teach him a lesson!]
Lu Fu sent a video message. I was startled and quickly tossed my phone in front of Lu Jin. "Mr. Lu... your sister is looking for you."
Not only did Lu Jin have two faces; I was also a coward. I could flirt online, but in person, I felt like a quail.
The video connected.
Lu Fu immediately started: "I told you, Lu Miao, what are you pretending for? Show some of your skills! You’re really making your sister mad! You... Uncle???"
Uncle?
"Ah, Uncle, what are you doing here? I’m so sorry! I thought it was Lu Miao!"
Lu Fu's attitude did a complete 180; she looked like she wanted to jump through the screen to apologize to Lu Jin. "I’m so sorry, Uncle! I didn’t mean it!"
She shouted my name loudly: "Mianmian, I have something to take care of; I’ll be busy now."
With a loud "thud," she hung up the video call.
Then she messaged me:
[I’m doomed! I mistook the person! My brother and my uncle have similar profile pictures; I misread it! I just realized now!]
[Ah, Mianmian, that’s my uncle, not my brother.]
[My uncle isn’t suitable for you; don’t be fooled by how young he looks—he has an old man’s mindset! He has strong controlling tendencies!]
[I’m really scared of him; you need to break up with him!]
[He’s very fierce! He’ll ruin you in every way possible! How did you get into Lu Group? Run away!]
The screen kept flashing.
I was so stunned that I didn’t immediately put my phone away. Lu Jin saw everything clearly and frowned slightly. "Is this how she usually promotes me?"
Yes.
Lu Fu had mentioned her uncle more than once. According to her, her uncle was no ordinary person; he was born abroad and worked hard there. At sixteen, he earned his first pot of gold through a patent he applied for overseas. With that money, he started a tech company and revitalized the struggling Lu family business when he was just eighteen.
Lu Fu said, "But our whole family doesn’t really know him well. My uncle has a strange temper and an odd personality; I’m scared of him when I see him."
She also said, "My uncle keeps his distance from people; many daughters of company owners wanted to be introduced to him but were rejected. It seems like he doesn’t like women or men."
"It seems like he just doesn’t like people!"
When Lu Fu introduced him to me, I felt cold sweat running down my back—it was chilling.
"I’m not that kind of person."
Lu Jin's voice pulled me back to reality as he clenched his fists on the table and knocked lightly. "Lu Fu, this is slander."
"Mr. Lu, don't be angry. She was just joking," I said, flashing him a smile, but Lu Jin's tone darkened. "You call me Xiao Jin Jin in private, but Mr. Lu in front of others?"
"No, I—"
"Lu Fu, are you introducing Lu Miao?" Lu Jin pressed with a furrowed brow.
"Yes, that's right."
It was a beautiful misunderstanding.
"Lu Miao won't do," Lu Jin said, his frown deepening. "He has six-pack abs; I have eight."
Hearing such a serious statement from a Cold CEO made me break into a sweat.
"And he doesn't have stamina; he gets tired after two hours of exercise. I can go for four."
"…Huh?" Was it the kind of exercise I was imagining?
"His marathon performance is also quite average; his endurance is lacking."
Lu Jin's words wiped away any color in my mind, and I struggled to maintain my smile.
"Besides, he's cm tall, while I'm cm, which makes me two centimeters taller than him."
As he spoke, Lu Jin's face grew redder, reaching all the way to his ears, yet his tone remained eerily calm. "But to be fair, he's five years younger than me. So he's not suitable for you; he's immature."
I had never met Lu Miao, but I felt sympathy for him; he was being overshadowed by his uncle.
"Mr. Lu, I'm hungry. Can we eat first?" I tried to change the subject.
"Sure."
As I ate, I retrieved my phone and messaged Lu Fu: [Your uncle just saw what you said earlier.]
Lu Fu replied: [Ahhh! I'm doomed! You're amazing; you can even flirt with my uncle! Before this, I thought he would be lonely forever.]
Lu Fu continued: [I won't say more; I'm going abroad for three months to escape! Make sure to say good things about me in front of him! I want to survive.]
After finishing dinner, Lu Jin escorted me back to my hotel room and reminded me, "You need to meet a client tomorrow at noon. Lin Yue will send you your materials; prepare accordingly."
"Okay."
That night, Lin Yue sent the final version of the materials to my email and called to explain: "Lemian, you might not understand the rules at the company. I need to tell you that Mr. Lu doesn't drink alcohol; make sure to cover for him tomorrow."
"I've prepared everything; there shouldn't be any issues with signing. I noticed you've been sneaking glances at Mr. Lu in the office—don't harbor any thoughts about that."
Lin Yue took a deep breath before reminding me, "Mr. Lu has someone he likes; it's been eight years."
"How do you know?" I blurted out.
Lin Yue paused for a few seconds before responding, "I've been following Mr. Lu since we came from the overseas company; how could I not know about his personal matters?"
I had overheard the secretaries discussing it in the break room.
Secretary General Lin Yue of the Lu Group had been with Lu Jin for over ten years, and she understood his needs and temperament well. Now it seemed she knew him even better than Lu Fu did.
Before hanging up the phone, Lin Yue warned me once again, "I've seen too many people with impure thoughts in this company. You're not the first. If you want to keep your job, don't entertain any crooked ideas."
Before long, a message from Lu Jin arrived. "Wife, kiss me goodnight."
As a matter of routine, we used to share a kiss before going to sleep. But now, thinking of Lu Jin's face while reading his message gave me a strong sense of disconnection. It felt as if I were dating two boyfriends. Surprisingly, I found myself quite fond of both.
However, recalling Lin Yue's words about him having someone he liked for eight years made me decide to text Lu Fu to probe for more information: "Does your uncle have someone he's liked for eight years?"
Lu Fu replied, "?"
I continued, "It seems you don't know either. Lin Yue mentioned it. Do you know Lin Yue?"
Lu Fu responded, "I know her; she's my uncle's personal secretary. They get along quite well. She's the only person I've seen my uncle not dislike, and she's been working with him for many years. She often visits my grandparents too."
It seemed Lin Yue indeed held a significant position.
Lu Fu added, "But I don't know about the person he liked for eight years. Is it Lin Yue?"
I replied, "It doesn't seem to be."
Ten minutes later, Lu Fu messaged me back: "Ah, I remember now! My uncle dated someone a long time ago! But according to him, she passed away."
Reading Lu Fu's message kept me tossing and turning all night without sleep. I didn't reply to Lu Jin's message either.
The next day, I showed up with dark circles under my eyes and found Lu Jin looking just as tired.
"Mr. Lu, did you not sleep well last night?" I asked him.
He wore a cold expression, his sharply defined jawline slightly raised. "Yeah, I waited all night for a goodnight kiss but never got one. So I read and studied for a while."
"What were you studying?" I asked curiously.
He looked serious as he replied, "Teaching me how to pursue a girlfriend."
