I opened the door and found Chu Fan standing outside in his underwear, instantly feeling shy and lowering my head. "Why are you in such a hurry?"
"Because there's something I need to be urgent about."
"You're annoying!" I pushed Chu Fan away and blushed as I returned to the bedroom.
Before long, Chu Fan had finished washing up. Without saying a word, he climbed onto the bed and pressed down on me.
"Don't be so hasty; I'm not ready yet!"
"It’s not like it’s our first time. What more do you need to prepare? Do you want me to suffer in silence?"
"You’re so annoying!"
"You won’t feel that way in a bit."
The playful banter between us stung my eyes. I could feel my body responding to Chu Fan's touch, but I couldn't stop it. For the first time, I hated this kind of thing even more.
Tears streamed down my face as I closed my eyes, trying not to see or feel anything. But the connection between body and soul was undeniable; the sensations became increasingly unbearable until I could no longer hold back and shouted.
"Chu Fan, no, Jun Chong, you bastard! Aren't you a ghost? Can't even tell the difference? That woman is fake; I'm the real Gu Anxin! I'm your wife. Didn't you say you were my husband? Why can't you even tell this apart? What kind of husband are you? What kind of ghost are you? You heartless bastard! You have no idea how scared I am while you're not by my side. Jun Chong, you're a jerk! Wuwu, help me, save me, Jun Chong! I'm so scared; I don’t want to die. Help me!"
By the end of my rant, I was sobbing uncontrollably, not even knowing what I was saying. Just the thought that that woman could kill me at any moment while Jun Chong was happily being affectionate with her drove me insane.
A soft sigh echoed in my ear, a slightly cool breath gradually enveloping me, gentle and soft.
"If you're scared, why didn't you ask for help sooner? Why wait until now to be stubborn?"
Hearing the voice, I suddenly opened my eyes and found my vision had widened. In the bright bedroom, a woman lay on the floor covered in blood, her breath weak and her form flickering as if she might disappear at any moment.
"Ah!" I jumped up from the bed, realizing I could move. "Am I free? What’s happening?"
"My lord, I'm sorry! Please give me another chance! I promise I won't make the same mistake again. If you spare me this once, I'll tell you where your body is sealed."
Only then did I notice a man in a dark robe standing by the bed, his back to me as he stepped closer to the woman. His long fingers curled slightly, and in his palm was a purple orb of light that flickered like flames.
"Now you tell me this, but it's too late."
He raised his hand and threw the purple flame he held. Despite being a small fireball, it instantly engulfed the woman upon contact. She struggled in the flames, her piercing screams ringing painfully in my ears, yet Jun Chong did not retract the fire.
In his sidelong glance, I saw a hint of cold ruthlessness that made me shrink back under the covers.
It wasn't until there was nothing left of the woman that the flames returned to his palm and vanished.
I watched everything unfold; it took no more than a minute, yet it felt like an eternity.
"Who?"
He suddenly darted toward the window. I heard a wildcat's cry from outside, and then I saw the wooden box I had destroyed sitting on the windowsill, with two yellow Peach Branches inserted into its lock.
I was astonished; it was the box that contained the Human Skin Mask.
He opened the window, squinted, and picked up the box. With a squeeze of his hand, the wooden box shattered into pieces, scattering debris into the night wind.
"Awake?" The person who turned around had gentle eyes and a smile on his lips as he looked at me.
I thought he was Jun Chong, but when he turned to face me, it was a completely unfamiliar face. "Who are you?"
The answer came in the form of a fierce kiss. "Have you forgotten your husband?"
I was taken aback. Was this man really Jun Chong?
"But those times you—"
I struggled to find words; those moments had all been in dreams. I had been so terrified that I hadn't truly seen him. So in some sense, I didn't know what Jun Chong looked like at all.
Jun Chong's eyes were darker and deeper than Chu Fan's, carrying an emperor's arrogance and a ruler's coldness. Yet when he looked at me with slightly narrowed eyes, he concealed that sharp edge with a subtle softness—just enough to captivate one's heart.
His three thousand black strands of hair cascaded down his back like a waterfall, unbound by any ribbons, appearing somewhat disheveled. But against his similarly dark pupils, his skin appeared even whiter and almost translucent, adding a touch of wild beauty that was utterly enchanting.
I had never known a man could be so strikingly beautiful that I momentarily forgot where I was, lost in awe.
"Do I look good?"
"Alright—" I barely managed to say a word when I caught a glimpse of Jun Chong's smile, a gentle yet somewhat indifferent curve at the corner of his mouth. The words I had on the tip of my tongue were swallowed back. "What good is it for a man to be handsome? He's not a woman."
Jun Chong's eyes, which had been filled with laughter, suddenly narrowed, and an icy aura shifted into something dangerous. A chill ran down my spine, prompting me to hurriedly explain, "Who told you to look better than me? Am I not allowed to be jealous?"
The words slipped out in such a flustered manner that I surprised myself. Yet, there was a satisfied glint in Jun Chong's narrowed gaze as he tightened his grip around my hand, his large palm gently stroking my hair.
"Anxin, are you scared?"
I lowered my eyes and nodded.
How could I not be scared? Ever since the day I met you, I've been terrified.
But I dared not voice that thought. This man could treat someone like me so ruthlessly and even threaten me with those around me. Offending him would surely lead to dire consequences, so all I could do was take it one step at a time.
"Since you're scared, you might as well get used to my presence early on because only I will protect you." Jun Chong pulled me down beside him, his cold breath wrapping around me, making me feel suddenly drowsy. "And you are my woman, always will be."
I didn't want to be his woman. Instinctively wanting to refute him, the heavy wave of fatigue washed over me, clouding my consciousness and making it hard to catch what he said next.
Jun Chong stared intently at me, the light playing across his dark pupils without casting any shadows.
"Anxin, I'm quite pleased with your performance this time. At least in the days to come, when you encounter difficulties, fear won't take control; you'll find ways to resolve it. But even so, I hope you'll call for me early on and learn to rely on me."
