The human eye is most accustomed to light colors, especially white. Therefore, after staring at a particular color for an extended period, fatigue sets in.
I looked up and saw the small room filled with dense blood handprints, each one vividly clear, as if a hand had pressed down with great force. Bright red droplets gathered along the patterns.
I wasn't sure if it was due to the prolonged focus on the visual changes, but it seemed I could see something moving within the handprints. It wasn't red; it was white, crawling slowly like a worm.
As the white "worms" moved outside the handprints, in the next moment, a new handprint would appear in the same spot, while the previous one vanished.
It was as if they could move on their own.
The thought of those handprints being alive sent chills down my spine. Instinctively, I clutched Chu Fan's arm, feeling a coldness in my palm. I didn’t pay much attention to it; I kept my eyes on the bloodstains gathering towards the ceiling while hesitating. "Can we leave this place?"
"What's wrong? Do you want to go?"
A completely different female voice made me freeze in terror. My neck felt trapped, unable to lower or turn. The only sensation I could feel was a cold wind gradually creeping in and an icy hand touching my face.
The skeletal hand had long, pointed nails; part of it was flesh while the other part was stark white bone, looking as if it had been gnawed upon, full of pits and hollows.
Beneath that chilling touch was a crawling sensation that felt unbearably itchy. I instinctively glanced at it and nearly lost my mind—swarming maggots were desperately gnawing at the flesh, writhing and squirming with their white bodies, leaving a trail of bloody carnage in their wake.
Goosebumps erupted all over me. I had a phobia of clusters and instinctively pushed that hand away, stumbling backward as I frantically wiped my face, trying to shake off those disgusting maggots.
Lin Shan stood before me, laughing eerily with a cackling sound as she tilted her head at me. “Anxin, will you come keep me company? I died in such pain; please stay with me.”
Lin Shan walked like a machine, her limbs clearly broken, yet she stubbornly stood there.
Her body was drenched in blood, dripping onto the floor.
"Lin Shan, how did you die? Was it the Spirit of the Plate?"
Although I was terrified and unsure whether this was a dream or reality, I had to suppress my fear since Lin Shan had come to me for a reason. I needed to know the truth about her death.
"It wasn't the Spirit of the Plate. It was a woman, the one who committed suicide in that classroom. She has come back to claim lives. Anxin, look, Sweet and the others will die too."
She pointed at the ceiling, and instinctively, I looked up. I was horrified to see blood handprints converging in the center of the ceiling, forming a bloodstain as large as a half-human. In the five fingers, I could see Lin You and the others. They were desperately shouting and trying to break free, but they couldn't escape.
"No, it can't be."
"Then are you going to let me die alone? Anxin, how cruel you are! Do you know how much pain I was in when I died?"
Lin Shan took a step closer to me, her expression suddenly twisting in agony. She stumbled and fell to her knees. She reached for her chest, but before she could touch it, several fingers emerged from her body. The fingers spread apart like opening a sliding door, and with a violent tug, Lin Shan's chest was gruesomely torn open.
Her red heart was still beating.
Bright red blood sprayed out, splattering all over me. "Anxin, save me."
Lin Shan convulsed as she cried for help. I wanted to go to her, but my entire body was trembling.
At that moment, a head shot out from inside her. Instinctively, I raised my hands to shield myself. Through the gaps between my fingers, I saw a woman's head emerging from Lin Shan's body, chewing on Lin Shan's heart and swallowing it bite by bite.
Blood flowed everywhere, yet she looked utterly satisfied.
At that moment, I could no longer hold back; I bent over and vomited. Fear and disgust overwhelmed me completely as I curled up on the ground, unable even to scream for help.
"A remnant of a soul dares to harm others? Get lost!"
The wide sleeves, carrying a subtle chill, isolated the heavy scent of blood from the outside, leaving only a refreshing aura lingering at the tip of my nose. The chest that was not warm but felt safe held me tightly.
"Jun Chong."
I weakly called out his name. At this moment, the dormitory had returned to normal, even the bloody handprints had vanished.
Jun Chong looked down at me, his large palm gently rubbing my hair as he said softly, "It's okay now."
"Jun Chong."
"Mm."
"Jun Chong."
"Speak."
"Jun Chong."
"…"
I repeatedly called his name, my eyes reflecting his growing impatience. I stared at him, calling out his name as if that was the only way to bring me peace.
I knew that crying my heart out would be the best relief for my emotions right now, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
"You silly girl, if you're scared, just cry out loud. With me here, nothing will happen. I will protect you well, so don't hold back—cry out loud."
Jun Chong sighed helplessly, patiently patting my back. His deep voice whispered soothingly in my ear over and over again, suddenly reminding me of how my mother used to comfort me when I was scared as a child.
As emotions surged, my nose tingled and tears streamed down my face. I clung to Jun Chong's neck, crying out loud.
I cried until my throat was hoarse.
The investigation lasted a day and a night, causing many people to flee in fear. Only Xiaoya remained hidden in the dormitory, muttering to herself that the Spirit of the Plate was coming for her life. No matter how anyone tried to persuade her, she refused to step outside.
"You all will die, you will all die, ha ha..."
After what happened yesterday, I truly lacked the courage to step back into that dormitory. If it weren't for my concern for Lin You, I wouldn't have come at all.
Xiaoya's words echoed in my ears, reminding me of what Lin Shan had told me—that the female ghost had returned to claim lives, and we would all die.
"Ghosts have always killed through heart attacks; Lin Shan was murdered by a psychopathic killer. We won't die."
Yang Qing shouted excitedly, gripping his hands tightly, refusing to believe it was the work of a ghost.
"If it's not a ghost, then what is it?" Tiantian trembled slightly, her face pale with evident fear. There were many versions of the Spirit of the Plate legend; only those who had experienced it could discern truth from fiction. "I warned everyone before that playing Spirit of the Plate required following the rules; otherwise, something bad would happen. Lin Shan didn’t listen, and now she’s dead and dragging us down with her."
"This isn't the time for despair; we will be fine."
"You can say that because you didn't play! Of course you’re not worried!" Tiantian bit her lip tightly. "We're definitely doomed this time; we're absolutely going to die. I really went crazy for agreeing to play with you all; it's your fault I'm in this mess."
Suddenly, I noticed a flicker of red light in the palm of Tiantian's slightly clenched hand. It vanished in the blink of an eye.
That flash resembled what I saw in Lin Shan's palm after she died. Could this really be a coincidence?
"Die?" Xiaoya suddenly burst into laughter, her voice echoing eerily in the quiet dormitory. Outside, the sky was pitch black with no stars; even the moonlight seemed particularly desolate.
"Are you all ready to accompany me?" Xiaoya stood up from the bed, tilting her head as she looked at us. Her pitch-black pupils held no light, resembling dead ashes. "We four swore to live and die together; have you all forgotten? Come and be with me!"
"Xiaoya, are you crazy? Who wants to die with you?" Yang Qing scoffed, spitting on the ground. "I'm leaving."
At that moment, I felt a jolt of alarm. Xiaoya had quickly grabbed Yang Qing, who was closest to her, and picked up a pen from the table, stabbing it into her eye. Yang Qing screamed, blood gushing forth.
We were all taken aback by this sudden turn of events, unable to react until Yang Qing, gritting her teeth in pain, began to struggle with Xiaoya. We rushed forward to break them apart.
But as I stepped into the dormitory, the door behind me suddenly slammed shut with a loud bang. My heart raced even more; clearly, no one was insane—so who had closed the door?
"Anxin, call security!"
Lin You's shout snapped me back to reality. I immediately took out my phone to call for help, but someone suddenly grabbed my wrist, a chilling coldness seeping into my bones that made me shiver.
"Tian Tian, what are you doing?"
"Anxin, I told you all to come and be with me."
The cold laughter and the eyes glowing red told me instinctively that the person before me was not Tian Tian.
"You are—Lin Shan?"
"Anxin, you're so clever."
"Lin Shan, weren't you—" Wasn't Lin Shan beaten back by Jun Chong yesterday? Why was she here now?
"Your man is really ruthless; he almost beat me to death."
"Lin Shan, what exactly do you want to do?"
"What do I want to do?" The curve of her lips turned cold before it could even form a smile. "Of course, I want to watch you all die and then take me with you."
Her eyes sparkled with a sinister glee, and I felt a chill run down my spine as Xiaoya picked up a fruit knife from the shelf and lunged it towards Yang Qing.
Lin You was quick to react, pulling Yang Qing away just in time, but that meant the knife would stab her instead. I screamed in panic, "Xiao You, watch out!"
With a loud bang, the door was flung open from the outside, and Lin You managed to step back just in time to avoid the attack.
"What are you doing here?"
The beam of a flashlight swept over each person, illuminating everything inside. Qi stared at the scene with an expressionless tone that betrayed no emotion.
"I will be back."
Lin Shan whispered this in my ear before leaving, her sweet and soft body collapsing onto me, while Xiaoya fell down as well.
"What happened here?" The female teacher who followed in was horrified at the sight and screamed, "Professor Qi, quick! Call for an ambulance!"
"Okay."
