"Is this a newspaper from 1990?" Lin You glanced at the photo on the newspaper and then at the date above. "Has our school kept this newspaper for so long?"
"Let's not talk about that for now. Isn't that building in the photo the Old Teaching Building?" I pointed to the first photo above. The teaching building was already quite old by then, while a new teaching building was under construction nearby.
Chu Fan pointed to the content of the newspaper and pushed it in front of us. "You guys take a look first; I'll step out for a moment."
Lin You and I nodded and sat down to carefully read the report.
Over twenty years ago, there was a girl named Yunxia at this school who was killed by having her heart cut out, right in the classroom where Lin You and her friends summoned the Spirit of the Plate.
It was said that at that time, Yunxia lay sprawled on the floor, her limbs broken, her chest opened, and her heart missing. Blood splattered throughout the classroom, creating a horrific scene that left the first eyewitnesses traumatized.
After the incident, the school reported it to the police. Following an investigation, they quickly identified a suspect: Yunxia's roommate, a petite girl named Lin Yu.
The investigation revealed that the two had been in conflict over a boy.
That boy had originally been Lin Yu's boyfriend, but because Lin Yu had a heart condition, he cheated on her with Yunxia, which ignited her fury.
Lin Yu died from a heart attack before she could be convicted.
Everyone thought this would be the end of it, but on Yunxia's death anniversary, her classmates went to pay their respects only to find that the next day, they died in their dormitories in the same manner—having their hearts cut out.
From then on, rumors began to spread throughout the school. Many claimed that when passing by the Old Teaching Building at night, they could hear particularly mournful voices coming from the classroom on the Sixth Floor, repeatedly asking,
"Where is my heart?"
Panic spread among students, and many submitted transfer requests.
The school had no choice but to invite a master to seal Yunxia's soul, and from then on, the teaching building was abandoned.
After reading that, I turned to Lin You and said, "So you guys went to play Spirit of the Plate that night, which actually broke the seal there and released Yunxia?"
Lin You looked troubled and didn't know how to respond; he just nodded, "Maybe."
"I don't think it was Yunxia coming back for revenge." I recalled what Lin Shan had said in the dorm that day. "If it really was her, why have all the ghosts we've encountered so far been Lin Shan? Including Sweet's death, it was all Xiaorou. Xiaorou was manipulated by Lin Shan. If it were truly Yunxia seeking vengeance, there would be no need for such trouble."
Lin You couldn't answer either. Our conversation fell into an awkward silence as I stared at the picture of Lin Yu in the newspaper. She looked familiar, but this newspaper was quite old, and the photo had long since faded.
"Isn't this Lin Shan?" Qi Zhi suddenly appeared out of nowhere, stepping between us. He adjusted his rimless glasses and pointed at the newspaper. "Where did you find this paper?"
"Professor Qi, we're discussing a Supernatural Novel! Could you step away for a moment?"
Qi Zhi sat down with a smile, casually waving his hand. "Since it's a novel, listening in won't hurt. Are you afraid the teacher will steal your inspiration?"
"Of course not."
It seemed Qi Zhi was determined not to leave. I exchanged glances with Lin You, who shrugged her shoulders and mouthed to me, "What should we do?"
I pouted and replied silently, "Should we just go back first?"
"That works."
Just as Lin You and I were about to leave, Qi Zhi picked up the newspaper and smiled. "No matter how you look at it, Lin Shan's death seems very similar to this Yunxia! Do you think it's possible that Lin Shan, like this Yunxia, died unwillingly and came back for revenge? So the first person around her ended up in trouble?"
At his words, both Lin You and I halted our steps forward before retracting them.
Qi Zhi then set down the newspaper and smiled at us slightly. "Not leaving anymore?"
I exchanged an awkward smile with Lin You, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Qi Zhi, however, seemed unfazed, resting his hands on the table. "Do you believe in ghosts? Or do you think that the deaths of Lin Shan and the others were caused by humans or spirits?"
"Well—"
Lin You and I hesitated. We knew it was all the work of ghosts, but Qi Zhi was a teacher and generally wouldn't believe in such supernatural theories.
So it was difficult to answer.
"Then what does Professor Qi think? Is it human or ghostly?"
Chu Fan placed a hand on my shoulder, squinting at Qi Zhi, his gaze shifting, revealing no hint of his emotions.
I felt a wave of relief wash over me, unconsciously leaning against him.
Qi Zhi smiled slightly and removed his glasses. "From a historical perspective, one cannot dismiss supernatural beliefs, but from a modern scientific viewpoint, humans can also achieve such things."
"Isn't that pointless then?" Chu Fan scoffed, wrapping his arm around me from behind. "We have things to do; we'll take our leave."
"Chu Fan, I remember you had a serious car accident not long ago. Shouldn't you be resting more?"
A chill ran down my spine. He wouldn’t have discovered the truth about Chu Fan’s accident, would he?
Just as I was about to explain to Chu Fan, he casually said, "Professor Qi mentioned it seemed serious, but it really wasn't that bad. Just a little extra concern from the professor."
"Of course."
Chu Fan didn't say anything more and hurriedly led me out of the library. As we walked briskly, he reminded me, "Stay away from him in the future. Don't forget."
"Well, I know. Where did you just go?"
"The Old Teaching Building."
"Ah!" I exclaimed, "Did you discover anything?"
"There were signs of a seal there, but it has been broken now, and Yunxia's spirit has vanished."
"Vanished?"
Just as I asked, Lin You came running towards me with a phone in hand. "Anxin, Xiaoya is in trouble."
"What happened?"
"I'm not sure either. The call was from Xiaoya's mom. She said Xiaoya suddenly went crazy, shouting that someone was trying to kill her and kept calling my name, so she hopes I can come over."
"Okay, I'll go with you."
"You're not going." Chu Fan suddenly tightened his grip on my wrist, refusing to let go, his expression unfriendly.
"Why not? We're just going to check on Xiaoya."
"Lin Shan is with her. If you go, you won't come back alive." Chu Fan glanced at Lin You before fixing his gaze on me, speaking each word deliberately. "Don't forget that you almost died last night."
At his words, Lin You immediately looked at me nervously. "What happened? Did something occur last night?"
"Xiao You, it's nothing. Last night—"
"Last night, she almost got choked to death by a ghost." Chu Fan loved to contradict me. "When I arrived, Lin Shan had possessed Xiaoya and was about to strangle her."
"What?" Lin You glared at me, "Anxin, why didn't you tell me about such a big deal!"
"I... I just didn't want you to worry."
Lin You knew my temperament; I was always the one to share good news and keep bad news to myself. With a helpless sigh, he turned to Chu Fan, "Chu Fan, you're a ghost. We can only rely on you for this. Do you have any solutions?"
"I do." Chu Fan pulled me in tightly and leaned over to kiss me lightly, "Who told my wife to speak up?"
My face flushed with heat as I struggled but found no way out, feeling somewhat angry. "Who is your wife?"
"Well, the adjustment period is almost over. It's time to confirm our marital status."
"Pfft."
Seeing Lin You cover his mouth and smile made me blush even more. Fortunately, Chu Fan didn't tease me further and got straight to the point.
"If my estimation is correct, Lin Shan consumed Yunxia's soul. The only obsession left is the heart that was lost. However—"
"However what?"
"However, Yunxia was originally a Vengeful Spirit filled with resentment. If there hadn't been a third party involved, Lin Shan, who had just died not long ago, wouldn't have been able to consume Yunxia's soul, no matter how strong the resentment was. Not to mention being able to leave this building."
"This—"
Both Lin You and I were shocked. Wasn't this plot development a bit too overwhelming?
Chu Fan furrowed his brows, his dark eyes fixed intently on the teaching building. Following his gaze, I noticed that even in broad daylight, dark clouds loomed over the top of the building, with distant thunder rumbling ominously.
"What is that?"
Chu Fan squinted and turned to look at me. "Can you see it?"
"Yeah." I didn't understand why he asked that, but I nodded anyway.
Lin You, confused, looked around. "See what? There's nothing here!"
Chu Fan's deep eyes studied me for a moment before he suddenly broke into a smile. As he leaned down to kiss me, his large hand found the back of my head.
My mind went blank in an instant. "Chu Fan, what are you doing?"
"Do I need a reason to kiss you?" He shrugged with a carefree smile and ruffled my hair. "Tonight, we’re going to figure all of this out."
"Tonight?" I asked. "What are you planning to do?"
Chu Fan's gaze shifted to Lin You, who was standing nearby. At that moment, a faint red glow flickered in Lin You's palm. Feeling nervous, I tightened my grip on Chu Fan's hand.
"Lin You, we’re counting on you tonight."
"Me?"
*
It was my first time visiting a mental hospital, and both Lin You and I were quite anxious. The weather had worsened since then; it had just rained moments ago.
We met Xiaoya, who seemed dazed and truly looked like she belonged in a place like this. Yet her gaze fixed on us was eerily reminiscent of Lin Shan.
According to Chu Fan, Lin You had left a note for Xiaoya before we left the hospital.
Outside, the sky grew increasingly gloomy, and the wind howled, bringing an indescribable chill.
"The dormitory building is not the primary crime scene; Lin Shan was merely dumped there after her death. To obtain the heart, she will definitely go to the teaching building." Chu Fan's voice came through the phone, carrying a calm magnetism that inexplicably reassured me. "Anxin, don't be afraid. If you encounter danger, just call my name loudly."
"Okay."
Even though I knew his abilities, I still felt a bit scared.
In front of the Old Teaching Building, I took several deep breaths before walking in with Lin You.
It had been a long time since anyone used this place; the electricity had been cut off ages ago. Darkness engulfed the ground, and the beam of our flashlight seemed insignificant. The cold night air was chilling, and a brisk wind blew through.
I shivered and looked down to see the red light in Lin You's hand flicker again. I wondered if it had flashed as frequently when Sweet died, but Lin You seemed unaware of it.
I took another deep breath. Chu Fan said that as long as we found Lin Shan's soul and pressed the heart from my backpack onto her, she would disappear.
Because of the eerie aura surrounding Chu Fan, he couldn't get close, but he would appear whenever there was danger.
Lin You sensed my tension and held my hand tightly.
"Anxin, don't be afraid. I'm here!"
I truly appreciated Lin You; she was always so composed, even though her palm was trembling. Yet, she continued to comfort me.
