Almost every school has rumors of supernatural events, and it's hard to tell what's true and what's not. So, after nightfall, few dare to wander around.
It's better to believe in their existence than to dismiss them; who knows, the next moment they might just latch onto you.
Not to mention, this place is genuinely haunted. Who knows how many people died here in the past, or how many restless souls are trapped within these walls?
I gazed out at the broken window, where the shadows of trees swayed and intertwined like ghostly claws, suddenly reaching for your neck, ready to snap it with a chilling crack.
The eerie silence surrounded us as I climbed the stairs with Lin You. The classroom on the Sixth Floor was neither too far nor too close, yet I was drenched in cold sweat.
"Anxin, do you think Lin Shan really can't rest in peace and is coming back for revenge? So far, only Tiantian has died," Lin You suddenly spoke up, trying to break the unsettling silence.
"I don't know." I shook my head as I stepped onto the stairs. "I remember in that dream, all five of you died. And last night Xiaoya told me that she saw me on the night you summoned the Spirit of the Plate. Do you remember?"
"You?" Lin You tilted her head in thought. "I do recall someone coming in that night. At first, we thought it was the Spirit of the Plate; we vaguely saw a shadowy figure, but I couldn't see clearly. Then Lin Shan just dropped out of the game."
"But if that's the case, why did Xiaoya say it was me?"
Suddenly, the flashlight flickered and then went out.
"Why isn't it working?" I tapped the flashlight with no response; Lin You's flashlight was dead too.
"I brought spare batteries; let me find them."
“Lin You, Anxin.”
In the silent stairwell, a voice suddenly echoed, somewhat mournful, causing our hearts to race. We looked up and saw a figure standing on the second floor.
Weak moonlight streamed in behind her, making it hard to see clearly, but it was unmistakably Yang Qing.
She had her hands clasped behind her back, leaning slightly forward, and a bandage wrapped around her head as she stared at us.
The air was thick with the scent of blood.
“Yang Qing? What are you doing here?”
“I came to find Xiaoya. She ruined my eyes, and I want an explanation from her.”
Lin You grew anxious upon hearing this and quickly explained, “You’ve misunderstood Xiaoya. She was just controlled by Lin Shan’s spirit; she didn’t really intend to do this to you.”
“Oh? Is that so?”
“Yes,” Lin You affirmed. “Lin Shan was killed and returned for revenge. We came here tonight to stop her from killing again. Sweet Sweet died tragically; we can’t let anyone else die.”
“Is everything you said true?” Yang Qing tilted her head at Lin You, a flash of red light flickering between them. “If Lin Shan is a ghost, what assurance do you have of stopping her?”
I watched Yang Qing in silence. How could she appear here at this moment? Her words and actions always felt strange.
Just as I was about to stop Lin You, she revealed our plan.
“I have a heart here, a fake one. If I give it to Lin Shan, she will die.”
"That's great! I'll go with you!"
"Okay. Anxin, let's go."
I hesitated for a moment, preparing to follow them, but unexpectedly, my foot slipped, and I fell forward onto the stairs. My hands touched a sticky liquid that had a foul odor.
I leaned in closer and discovered that it was blood!
My hands were covered in blood!
But just a moment ago, the stairs had been dry.
Could it be—
I looked up, and at that moment, the dark clouds shifted, allowing more moonlight to pour through the broken window, illuminating Yang Qing. Blood was continuously flowing from a large wound in her chest, staining her white dress.
The blood splattered like Red Spider Lilies, exuding a haunting beauty from hell.
"Xiao You, don't go over there. Yang Qing is already dead."
Lin You was slowly approaching Yang Qing, showing no sign of stopping despite my fall.
"Xiao You!"
I shouted at her, but Lin You didn't respond at all and continued walking toward Yang Qing.
"Xiao You!"
Lin You walked over to Yang Qing, turning to look at me with eyes that were hollow, as dark as the desolate night surrounding us.
"Is this what you prepared, the Heart?"
Yang Qing pulled the fake Heart from Lin You's backpack, gripping it tightly before tearing it apart with sheer force.
My heart tightened suddenly.
A wave of loss mixed with panic surged within me. Without this thing, how would I deal with Lin Shan?
"Anxin, you can't save Lin You."
Yang Qing took Lin You's hand and started walking upstairs. I clenched my flashlight and chased after them, but a sudden force pushed me down the stairs. My head slammed against the wall, pain and dizziness crashing over me.
I weakly reached out my hand, watching helplessly as Lin You was taken away by Yang Qing.
The initial dream echoed in my mind. If Xiaoya really saw me in that dream, could it mean that all five of them, including Lin You, truly died in the end?
That feeling of helplessness and pressure filled my heart. The loneliness of being alone mixed with fear and dread of this otherworldly place drove me to the brink of panic.
"Jun Chong, where are you? I'm so scared alone; I don't know what to do."
I called out Jun Chong's name repeatedly, but all that answered me was the hollow echo of my voice.
He had clearly said that as long as I called his name, he would appear. But now, when I needed you the most, where were you?
"Anxin?"
The beam of the flashlight arrived beside me with a warm whisper, and through my hazy vision, I looked at the man in front of me, momentarily stunned. "Professor Qi?"
"Yes, it's me."
"What are you doing here?"
It was indeed suspicious for a university professor to appear here in the middle of the night.
Qi Zhi extended a tissue towards me. "Wipe your face. I saw you and Lin You coming here on my way home, so I followed to check it out. Seriously, knowing what happened here, how could you dare to come? Let's go back."
"No." I grabbed Qi Zhi's arm. With Jun Chong not showing up, I had no choice but to ask for his help. "Xiao You has been taken by Yang Qing. Will you come with me to find her?"
"I really don't know what to do with you two." Qi Zhi wiped my tears away, but when he tried to pull me up, he noticed my hands were covered in blood and frowned. "Where did this blood come from?"
"If I said it was Yang Qing's blood, would you believe me?"
"Yang Qing? Isn't she in the hospital?"
"Professor Qi, I don't know if you believe in ghosts, but at this point, I don't want to lie. Yang Qing was killed by someone who ripped out her heart, and then they took Xiao You away. I suspect they lost that classroom. Xiao You is my only friend; I have to bring her back."
Qi Zhi stared at me silently for a while. The dim yellow light of the flashlight seemed weak against the darkness of the building, and in his silence, only our breathing remained.
"Alright, let's go take a look."
I didn't expect Qi Zhi to agree so readily; it relieved me greatly.
At this moment, there was no time to think about anything else. Lin You had seen a red light in her hand; tonight was undoubtedly fatal for her. That was why Chu Fan had lured Lin Shan into this trap.
She is my best friend, and no matter what, I cannot abandon her.
"Don't be afraid, I'll lead you."
Qi Zhi's large hand tightly gripped mine as we moved forward. In the dim light, he wore a white trench coat today, a color rarely worn by men without looking out of place. It was as pure as snow, its pristine whiteness somehow bringing me a sense of calm.
Being led by him felt like a distant memory, as if someone had held my hand like this long ago. Our fingers intertwined, and no matter what lay ahead, as long as he was there, I wouldn't be afraid.
As we stepped onto the stairs of the Sixth Floor, I felt something tremble violently, like the beating of a drum, waves of sound reverberating through me.
"Ah, there's a ghost! Don't chase me, please!"
In the distance, a petite figure ran towards us, calling out in panic. When Qi Zhi shone the flashlight in her direction, I immediately recognized her.
"It's Xiaoya."
As Xiaoya approached, I instinctively wanted to retreat. I wasn't sure if she was putting on an act, but when I saw her tear-streaked face and the look of sheer terror in her eyes, my heart softened.
If she were truly under Lin Shan's control, her eyes shouldn't look like that.
Xiaoya looked at us with pitiful eyes and cried out, "There's a ghost chasing me! I'm so scared."
"Xiaoya, how did you end up here?"
I asked innocently. Xiaoya looked up at me through her tear-filled eyes. "I don't know. I just woke up here. I saw Yang Qing covered in blood bringing Lin You into that classroom—the one where we summoned the Spirit of the Plate—and I also saw Tiantian. It was so terrifying!"
My heart sank; they were indeed there.
"Don't be afraid, it's okay. We'll find Lin You and leave."
"But, teacher, I'm really scared. Can you hold my hand?"
Qi Zhi smiled lightly and released my hand. "Sure."
"Thank you, teacher."
Xiaoya smiled, the moonlight shifting around us. I noticed that the curve of her lips turned cold before she even smiled. A flash of white light flickered in front of my eyes, and before I could see what it was, I saw Qi Zhi clutching her abdomen and falling backward.
The knife in Xiaoya's hand was dripping blood.
"Teacher, don't blame me. It's your fault for being here."
Xiaoya's gaze was icy; there was no trace of the pity from before. With the knife in hand, she looked back at me with a cold smile that made me feel as if countless ants were gnawing at me.
"Anxin, I've been waiting for you for a long time. Come join us!"
With that, she lunged at me with the knife. I turned and ran, not knowing where to go.
The cold wind howled in my ears; all I felt was fear and a gradually numbing heart.
"Anxin, why are you running?"
A floating head appeared in front of me—it was Tiantian!
I choked on my breath, unable to recover. The face was barely recognizable, covered in writhing maggots that were greedily gnawing away at it.
“Anxin, let me taste your blood, shall I?”
“No, go away, help—”
Tears streamed down my face as I flailed my arms, trembling all over. My legs felt weak, and I was utterly powerless to escape. In the end, I rolled my eyes back and fainted.
I felt certain that this time I was doomed. Lin You had been taken away, Qi Zhi was injured and his life was uncertain, and there was no way I could escape this calamity.
But I was unwilling to accept it. Why hadn’t Jun Chong shown up yet?
You promised that as long as I called your name, you would come to my side.
But now, where are you?
Jun Chong.
Jun Chong!
