"Fool, I've always been here."
A cold hand wrapped around me from behind, the familiar chill and the deep, soothing voice calmed my frayed nerves.
Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably as I turned and hit Jun Chong with all my might, crying and cursing, "You bastard, why weren't you here just now? Do you know how scared I was? I was really so scared. Boohoo, Xiao You was taken away, Professor Qi was hurt, Yang Qing is dead, there are ghosts everywhere. I want to go home; I'm done with this."
"Can you really let Lin You go?" Jun Chong allowed my distress to wash over him without resistance, his voice soft and gentle. "Anxin, I know you're scared, but can you really bear to see Lin You die? She's still waiting for you in that classroom; only you can bring her back."
I froze for a moment, remembering how Lin You had stayed by my side when she knew I was haunted by ghosts, cheering me on. How could I give up on her just because I was afraid?
Besides, there was still the uncertain fate of Qi.
"But—" I looked at Jun Chong through tear-filled eyes, pouting. "But aren't you a ghost? Can't you—" I paused and stepped out of his embrace. "Forget it; I'll go by myself! You said your Eerie Aura is strong. If Lin Shan won't show up because of that, then this matter won't be resolved."
Jun Chong grasped my trembling hand; his long fingers were strikingly beautiful. I lowered my head and didn't dare to look at him.
"Anxin, aren't you afraid I'll deceive you like this?"
"Deceive me?" I looked up at him. "Even if you deceived me, there would be nothing I could do about it."
Jun Chong's gaze flickered, his tightly pressed lips remaining silent.
"Now that heart is gone; how am I supposed to deal with Lin Shan?"
"You just need to wait for her to appear; I'll take care of everything else."
"Mm."
I nodded, repeatedly telling myself not to be afraid, because my dear friend was waiting for me to rescue them. Yet my body remained cold, and my hands trembled uncontrollably.
"Anxin, don't be afraid. Wear this Hairpin; it will protect you."
Jun Chong placed the Hairpin I had bought at the antique shop into my hair, then left a kiss on my lips. A light chill seeped into my throat, spreading throughout my body like spring water.
I stared blankly into his eyes, suddenly feeling a sense of calm wash over me.
After saying that, Jun Chong disappeared. I looked around at my surroundings; I was in the corridor of the Sixth Floor.
But I had no idea which room was the classroom.
"I guess I'll have to check each one."
The sweet little head vanished, and Xiaoya was nowhere to be found. In the pitch-black night, I was all alone.
I wondered if anyone else had experienced this: in an extremely quiet night, especially when alone, one's senses become more acute than ever.
Any slight noise heightened my alertness.
Not to mention the sudden chill that brushed past my ear.
"Anxin, I've found you!"
The sweet little head floated in the air, seemingly very happy. But I felt like a startled cat and bolted away until I tripped over something and fell to the ground.
“Anxin, you can't escape! Come, join us!”
“Get away.”
I waved my hands, trying to run, but after several attempts, I failed. My whole body trembled with fear.
The head of Tiantian was right in front of me, her face covered in maggots gnawing at her flesh. I could barely recognize her sweet face; she grinned, her mouth full of writhing maggots. Every time she spoke, her sharp teeth bit through the squirming bodies.
“Anxin, come with me! Otherwise, I will eat you!”
“No—”
I closed my eyes and flailed about wildly. Suddenly, I heard a loud thud as something fell to the ground, and then there was silence.
“Anxin, open your eyes.”
The voice of Jun Chong echoed in my mind. I gasped for air and slowly opened my eyes.
In front of me, Tiantian's head was shattered, as if it had been blown apart. Brain matter splattered everywhere.
I could no longer hold it in and covered my mouth, retching violently.
The night felt interminably long. The wind blew through the window, yet I was drenched in sweat, caught in a torment of heat and cold.
After only a brief pause, I got up and began to walk along the wall. My legs trembled violently; I vowed that after this, I would stay far away from such ghosts and monsters.
The corridor on the Sixth Floor seemed vast and endless. I felt as though I had been walking for ages without finding a single classroom.
"Did I take a wrong turn?"
Dingling... dingling...
In the quiet night, I seemed to hear a faint sound of bells, very light and almost ethereal.
I followed the sound of the bells and hadn’t taken many steps before I noticed a dim yellow light coming from the wall on my right.
Turning my head to look, I discovered that a classroom door had appeared beside me, complete with a small window.
I wanted to go in, but the door was locked.
Through the small window, I could see inside the classroom. Aside from a single desk in the center, all the other desks were piled around the edges, making the large classroom feel extremely empty.
Four girls were sitting together around the desk, and on the ground beside them was a circle of candles. There were also candles in the corners of the classroom.
"Spirit of the Plate, come quickly... Spirit of the Plate, come quickly..."
The synchronized calls were summoning the Spirit of the Plate. Until a fifth hand appeared beneath the plate, the summoning was successful.
Though her long hair obscured her face, if our findings were correct, then the person standing between Lin Shan and Xiao You at that moment was Yunxia.
The questioning voices continued without pause or repetition, and an eerie silence surrounded me. I could hear my heart racing rapidly.
"Who is it?"
Lin You's voice suddenly rang out, and at that moment, the door in front of me swung open by itself. A figure rushed towards me at an incredible speed.
I instinctively wanted to retreat, but she had already passed through my body and vanished into the night. In our stunned exchange, I saw the smile curling at the corners of her mouth.
Then Lin You appeared before me.
At that moment, all the candles extinguished, plunging the classroom into an unprecedented darkness.
Was that a ghost? Did she break the candle barrier? I thought, but received no confirmation.
"Xiao You, who is it?" Xiaoya asked, while Lin You shook her head, indicating she couldn't see clearly.
"Ah—" a sweet voice screamed from over there, "Lin Shan, why did you let go? The Spirit of the Plate hasn't been dismissed yet; we'll be in trouble like this!"
"I-I..." Lin Shan stammered, unable to speak, her face pale and her eyes wide with terror as she stared ahead.
There, I saw Yunxia coldly glaring at Lin Shan, her voice hoarse and unpleasant. "Lin Yu, I've waited for so long; you finally appeared. This time, I will make you taste the agony of dying a slow death."
"W-Who are you?" Lin Shan's voice trembled as she stepped back. "I'm not Lin Yu."
"Still trying to deny it? You are Lin Yu." Yunxia advanced step by step, pressing closer. "You killed me in this classroom; have you forgotten? I remember that after you paralyzed me, the first thing you severed was my left hand, right?"
With a sharp "Gla," I watched as Lin Shan's left hand sliced through the air in an arc before falling to the ground, blood gushing forth and splattering everywhere.
I instinctively wondered why the others weren't afraid and turned to find they had disappeared without me noticing.
In this room, only Yunxia and Lin Shan remained.
"And then your right hand."
"Left foot."
"Right foot."
Lin Shan's limbs had been severed, blood pooling at my feet, exuding a heavy stench. I pressed against the wall, unable to stop retching. The experiences before had been terrifying, but now they were mixed with nausea; anyone would struggle to endure this.
At first, Lin Shan screamed continuously, but eventually her voice faded away, leaving only low sobs.
"I am not Lin Yu, I am not."
"Still trying to deceive me?" Yunxia waved a hand, and I saw Lin Shan's body bend forward, her shirt vanished, revealing a wound that crossed from her right breast to her left.
The wound was large and bled profusely; the red heart in her chest continued to beat.
"I will consume you; I want you to taste my pain, hahahaha..."
Yunxia ruthlessly carved wounds into Lin Shan's body, flesh flying everywhere. Beneath her crimson eyes, I saw something white glowing within Lin Shan—a pearl the size of a quail egg, flickering brightly.
As Yunxia's rage intensified, the pearl grew brighter.
Most people subjected to such treatment would likely succumb to pain or faint.
Yet Lin Shan still kept her eyes open, mumbling incomprehensible phrases.
It wasn't until her heart was ripped out by Yunxia that her gaze finally dimmed completely.
"Lin Shan, what are you doing? Come back."
Xiaoya's voice pulled me back to reality. I turned to see her bending down to lift Lin Shan from the ground. There was no sign of Yunxia anywhere around, and even Lin Shan appeared whole.
Except for her pale complexion.
Lin Shan stood up and walked outside with Xiaoya and the others. As she passed in front of me, I caught a glimpse of the emptiness in her eyes, along with a large pool of blood flowing from her.
"So this is the true process of Lin Shan's death. Who could endure such pain?"
Watching all of this left me numb, even making me forget my fear for a moment.
"Actually, I died in this classroom that night."
The sudden voice beside me caught me off guard, a chilling wind accompanied by a strong taste of blood swept through.
"Anxin, you saw the process of my death, didn't you? I was in so much pain, pain that numbed me, yet I wasn't dead. That piercing agony spread throughout my body, gnawing at every inch. But they didn't know; they were all living just fine. I couldn't accept it—why was I the only one who had to die? I couldn't accept it. Later, that person told me that as long as I ate Yunxia, I would have a chance to come back to life. But I couldn't find my heart; without it, I couldn't live. So I've been searching, searching..."
I looked at Lin Shan, who was now so close. Her eyes were an eerie crimson, filled with bloodlust. Her head floated above her body, and where her chest opened up, her organs had been devoured by maggots, leaving behind an empty specimen.
She tilted her head, straining to remember, then suddenly widened her eyes and stared at me. "Anxin, do you know where my heart is?"
