As I thought about how Lin You might have been consumed by her, my heart shattered. The bond between Lin You and me had always been one where she played the role of Big Sister, taking care of me.
She shared the good times with me, while enduring the bad alone. Even when I faced a Ghost Marriage and was on the brink of death, she never gave up on me.
But this time, I couldn't save her.
Tears blurred my vision as an inexplicable, intense anger filled my heart, driving me to strike the monster harder. "You killed Xiao You, and I want you to pay for it!"
I didn't even know why I was able to hit her so fiercely; she didn't resist. At that moment, I couldn't think too much. I looked at the monster, barely clinging to life, gripped the wooden stick tightly, raised it above my head, ready to deliver the final blow.
"Die, monster!"
I brought my hands down mercilessly, but someone suddenly blocked my strike. He winced in pain as he snatched the wooden stick from my hands and tossed it aside.
"Get a grip! Don't let yourself be deceived!"
A clear reprimand accompanied by a ringing sound struck my heart. I felt my body lighten instantly, and my mind became clearer. I took a step back, drenched in sweat, staring at the man before me.
"It's you?" I recognized him as the Taoist from before.
"Good thing it's me," Molin scratched his head and said. "Otherwise, you would have killed her while being blinded by the ghost."
"What?"
He stepped aside, and only then did I see that the monster was gone; instead, there lay a person.
The familiar clothes sent a chill down my spine. At that moment, Molin crouched down and turned her over, lifting her Black Long Hair to reveal her face.
“Xiao You!”
I immediately ran over and hugged Lin You tightly, tears streaming down my face. Lin You was covered in wounds, looking utterly disheveled. “Xiao You, how could this happen? Who did this to you?”
“It was you.”
Molin sighed and explained, “You were blinded by the ghost and mistook her for a monster. By the time I arrived, you were attacking her without hesitation.”
“So—was it me who hurt her like this?”
I couldn’t believe it. How could I have laid such violent hands on my best friend? Just moments ago, there had been a force within me urging me to kill the monster in front of me.
If Molin hadn’t arrived in time, I would have committed murder and never forgiven myself.
“Xiao You, I’m so sorry. I truly am.”
Lin You was battered and bruised, but she still retained consciousness. She gave me a weak smile and tried to reach out to wipe away my tears, but she lacked the strength. Her breath was faint as she whispered, “Anxin, leave… it’s… dangerous… cat…”
Before Lin You could finish her sentence, she fainted. Even in her last moments of awareness, she was thinking of comforting me while I had almost killed her.
A wave of guilt washed over me, making me feel incredibly uneasy as I forgot what was most important at that moment.
“Don’t worry; getting her to the hospital will give us hope. Let’s go.”
Molin was clearly more composed than I was. He took Lin You from my arms and walked a few steps before shouting at me, “If you don’t want your friend to die, hurry up and move!”
His reprimand snapped me back to reality. I quickly got up from the ground and followed Molin as we rushed out of the Old House District toward the hospital.
The emergency doctor assessed Lin You’s severe injuries and immediately instructed me to notify her family. I knew then that Lin You was gravely hurt, and I couldn’t afford to be careless.
When Mom Lin and Lin's Dad arrived, the surgery was already underway.
As soon as they saw me, they rushed over and asked, "Anxin, what happened? How could Xiao You have been hurt?"
I bit my lip, unsure of how to explain. I couldn't bring myself to say that it was all my fault; if I did, they would surely hate me, and I would never be able to be friends with Lin You happily again.
"Anxin, don't be afraid. No matter what happens, we adults are here. Just tell us what really happened, okay?"
Mom Lin gently held my hand. She had always been a kind woman, treating me as if I were her own daughter. This made it even harder for me to speak; I bit my lip and let the tears flow.
Finally, Molin couldn't take it anymore and stepped in to explain. "Anxin received a text message from Lin You asking for help. When we found Lin You in the Old House District, she was already like this. We didn't see anyone else, so we don't know what happened."
On the way to the hospital, Molin had asked how I ended up in the Old House District. I told him about the text message; with that as evidence, it was a convincing explanation, and they believed it.
Seeing Mom Lin shed tears at that moment made me want to tell her the truth so badly. Even if it meant being hated, it might lessen my guilt.
But Molin said to me, "This whole situation is suspicious. When I went in today, I sensed a familiar presence—just like in this hospital. So I think Lin You must have been lured in here, and the main target was probably you."
"Me?"
"Yes." Molin leaned against the wall, his voice softly reaching my ears. "Because you—"
"You're the one who caused Xiao You to get hurt, aren't you!"
I didn't expect Ling Feng to show up here too, accompanied by Chu Fan.
Without saying a word, Ling Feng grabbed Molin by his collar. The basketball player had a powerful physique, making Molin appear quite small in comparison.
Molin frowned in displeasure. "Who are you?"
"I am Xiao You's boyfriend!" Ling Feng glared fiercely at Molin, seemingly provoked by something. "I knew there had to be a reason Xiao You wouldn't turn back; it turns out it's all because of you."
"Ling Feng, don't be like this. This isn't Molin's fault. If it weren't for him, Xiao You would be dead. You should be thanking him." I stepped forward to mediate. No matter what, we were in a hospital. "Auntie and Uncle are here; you shouldn't add to their worries."
Ling Feng paused, releasing Molin, and turned to me with a cold snort. "What happened to Xiao You?"
I hesitated and recounted what Molin had said earlier. Ling Feng seemed to believe me, but I felt even more guilty.
Chu Fan walked over and ruffled my hair, leading me outside. Once we were out, I hugged Chu Fan tightly and recounted everything that had happened. "Jun Chong, it's all my fault; it's because of me that Xiao You..."
"Do you want to take revenge for Xiao You?" Chu Fan didn't comfort me but instead asked this. I looked up at him in surprise, confused by his words. "I think she was lured there for a reason, likely to use you to destroy Lin You."
His words echoed those of Molin, making me question what my involvement in this matter was.
"What is their goal?" I suddenly recalled what had happened with Xiaoya. "Are they trying to force you to find that bell quickly? But how does this relate to Xiao You?"
"No," Chu Fan shook his head. "This is probably related to the Cat-Faced Granny from the Old House District. She has approached you more than once, ignoring my presence, so her intentions must be significant."
"Cat-Faced Granny," I murmured the name. I had heard rumors about her before, but such strange tales were common everywhere, so I hadn't paid much attention.
But this time felt different.
Especially after experiencing the previous incidents, I increasingly felt that perhaps I could never escape from such matters in my life.
"Rumor has it that the Cat-Faced Granny loves to eat children, and in this hospital alone, ten children have gone missing in the past two months—newborns. Not long after, their remains are found beside their mothers."
At some point, Molin had also come out, arms crossed against the wall, his tone serious.
"According to my investigation, there is indeed a Cat-Faced Granny in the Old House District. When she first appeared years ago, half of the residents suffered casualties overnight; many moved away afterward, and eventually, a barrier was placed there. But when I went in today, it was filled with ominous winds and an Eerie Aura. The barrier has weakened. If my calculations are correct, the weakening of that barrier is likely related to the long-standing haunting incidents at this hospital because the year the hospital reported hauntings was also when the rumors about the Cat-Faced Granny began in the Old House District. So these two events must be connected in some way. Although we still don't know their intentions, I have a feeling we must stop them; otherwise, it could lead to endless troubles."
"Us?" Chu Fan suddenly let out a cold laugh. "Who do you mean by 'us'?"
"Of course, I mean me and her." Molin pointed at me, making a gesture as if he were claiming me. "She has encountered that ghost and has been entangled by Cat-Faced Granny several times. With her help, it will definitely be twice as effective."
I didn't ask how he knew I had been bothered by Cat-Faced Granny, but from his words, I couldn't shake the feeling of being used as a pawn. I instinctively wanted to refuse, but Chu Fan had already spoken the answer for me.
"Anxin can indeed help you, but there must be some benefits in return, right?"
My eyelids twitched as I looked at Chu Fan. What did he mean by that? Was he really so kind as to offer help?
Molin stepped forward, grabbed my hand, and pulled me closer. "Anxin, come with me. Once we resolve this matter and go back, I'll have my master take you as a disciple. He will definitely help you get rid of that ghost."
"But I—"
"Get rid of it? Hey, interesting!" Chu Fan wrapped his arms around me from behind and casually adjusted my hairpin. Molin's eyes widened in shock; he released my hand and took a few steps back, staring at me. "You two are in a Ghost Marriage!"
I chuckled lightly, which was an acknowledgment. Chu Fan tightened his embrace, his laughter soft yet vastly different from before. "Little Taoist, if you want my Anxin's help, show your sincerity."
Molin frowned and scratched his head, messing up his black hair even more. Finally, with a determined expression, he said, "Speak up; what do you want?"
Chu Fan smiled, and I immediately felt a chill run down my spine.
