I paused in my steps and looked up at Chu Fan. "What's wrong with you?"
Chu Fan remained silent, his face dark as he stared at me, sending a chill down my spine. "What do you mean, what's wrong with me?"
To my surprise, Chu Fan suddenly lifted my shirt without caring whether Molin was still around. I quickly pressed down on my clothes, my face burning as I pouted, "Chu Fan, what are you doing?"
"Anxin, don't be afraid. If he loses control, I'll handle it."
"Just you?" Chu Fan shot a disdainful glance at Molin before abruptly picking me up and striding toward the elevator without looking back.
As he carried me, I could sense his displeasure and anger radiating from him, though he didn't say a word. I had no idea what had upset him; all I felt was a dull ache in my chest.
Once we got home, he suddenly released me from his grasp and tossed me onto the bed. Without saying a word, he began to undress me. I struggled desperately; this sudden turn of events was bewildering, and there was no way I would cooperate.
But the difference in strength left me at a disadvantage. "Jun Chong, I don't want this! I don't like it! Let go of me!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, my top was stripped away, leaving only one last layer of protection. It was then that he paused, his cold fingertips brushing against my warm skin, sending a shiver through me.
"Damn it," Jun Chong muttered under his breath. "I knew it would come to this. Are you feeling unwell anywhere?"
It was then that I noticed the Red Spider Lily blooming within me; what had once been a bud was now on the verge of full bloom. The red patterns spread along my meridians like a spiderweb across my body.
"I felt some pain tonight, but I didn't expect it to be like this."
I truly hadn't anticipated that the flower would bloom so quickly. The slight discomfort hadn't raised any suspicions, but death was inevitable; it was just a matter of time. It was unfortunate that I wouldn't get to savor the beautiful things before having to let them go.
My nose tinged with bitterness as I fought back tears and smiled while holding Jun Chong's hand. "It's okay; after all, I'll eventually face the day of death. It's just that this day has come a bit earlier. This way, you won't have to worry about Lin Shan threatening you and can pursue what you desire without hesitation."
"Anxin, remember what you promised me, to live well."
Jun Chong's pitch-black eyes erupted with a thick sharpness, subtly containing a hint of rippling lake water. My heart trembled; was this the mist he was conjuring for me?
"But the flowers are nearly all in bloom, I will soon—"
"This is an illusion; otherwise, Lin Shan should be appearing before us right now. Since she wants that bell, she won't let you die easily."
As Jun Chong spoke, his brow furrowed tightly, his pupils deepened with an all-encompassing darkness, as if the stars of the universe were swirling within. "It might be a bit uncomfortable, but bear with it; I will handle this."
Jun Chong reached out and pressed his hand against the center of the Red Spider Lily. His fingertips emitted a faint purple glow, bringing a coolness that penetrated my skin.
I trusted him, so I closed my eyes and relaxed.
At first, that coolness was just a touch, but it gradually intensified until I felt as if I had plunged into an ice cellar in the dead of winter. The chill spread throughout my body, drilling into my skin and merging with my bones and blood until there was no warmth left.
With my eyes closed, I felt my body growing lighter, then I began to fall, plunging into an endless abyss, frozen in place, unable to feel the light and warmth of the world anymore.
Surrounded by darkness, a cold wind howled; white snow covered everything without end.
I didn't know where I was, but a voice kept calling out to me from beside my ear, indistinguishable in gender, guiding me forward.
My feet moved uncontrollably as I walked ahead, exiting a narrow space into a vast cavern. Ice pillars surrounded me, scattered across the ground and clinging to the tops of the walls. They sparkled in various shapes, beautifully radiant.
The further I went in, the colder it became. Even though I was already numb from the freezing temperatures, I could still sense an even colder presence approaching me.
With a loud crack, an icicle fell from above and nearly struck my foot. I quickly pulled back my foot and tried to go around it but found that the icicle reflected a face.
Silver strands of hair seemed to be frozen mid-flow; a handsome face wore a familiar indifference. His blood-red pupils flickered briefly before disappearing.
“Jun Chong?”
A sudden thought flashed through my mind, and I looked up to see a massive ice-blue coffin at the center of the cave's ceiling. It was too high for me to see clearly, but I had a feeling there was definitely someone inside.
I scanned my surroundings, wanting to climb up the ice stalagmite, but just then, an invisible force pulled me toward the cave entrance. I shut my eyes in fear and then heard someone calling me by my ear.
“Anxin, Gu Anxin, wake up already.”
I opened my eyes to find myself in bed, surrounded by a stark white room with simple furnishings. It was indeed the hospital ward I had been visiting frequently these past few days, and Molin was sitting beside me.
“What happened to me?” I struggled to sit up but felt weak all over. A faint chill lingered in my chest. “Didn’t I go home yesterday?”
“Chu Fan brought you here. You had a fever of forty degrees and have been sleeping for a whole day and night. Today is the fifteenth; if you don’t wake up soon, tonight’s operation will be ruined.”
“Huh?” I was shocked. “How did I end up with a fever?” I turned my head and didn’t see Jun Chong, so I hurriedly asked, “Where’s Chu Fan?”
“Who knows? He just dropped you off with me and disappeared.” Molin clearly wasn’t pleased about it. “If you weren’t useful, I wouldn’t be playing babysitter. We need to discuss something; this matter is separate from our agreement. You help me catch ghosts for the Soul-Calling Bell, but after taking care of you for a day and night, you owe me a favor now. Don’t forget to repay it.”
I didn’t care about what he was saying; only one thought occupied my mind as I pushed him away. “You need to leave; I have something to deal with.”
“What is it?” Molin ignored me and continued speaking. “I need to go over tonight’s operation plan with you.”
“Come on, just step outside for a moment; it’s not convenient for you to be here.” I pressed my hand against my chest and pushed him firmly.
Molin frowned impatiently and got up from his chair. “You’re being so fussy, just like a woman.”
“…”
Am I not considered a woman in his eyes?!
Molin Just wait!
I gritted my teeth and, after confirming he was gone, went to the bathroom for a better look. I lifted my shirt, and the red veins on my torso had disappeared. The Red Spider Lily had reformed into a bud, identical to the first one, except for a faint purple light glowing at its center.
“Jun Chong, did you really fix it?” I bit my lip. “But where did he go?”
I quickly returned to the bedside, found my outerwear, and took out my phone to call Chu Fan. Fortunately, this time the call connected quickly. “Jun Chong, how are you? Did you get hurt because of me? Jun Chong, please talk to me. Don’t lie; I’m really worried about you.”
“I’m fine; just used up a bit of Ghost Power and need some rest. But don’t worry; tonight is the fifteenth, which is good for my recovery. I’ll come help you.”
Jun Chong’s voice was as it always was, but there was an added weakness, just like when he returned injured that day. Listening to him made tears stream down my face.
I knew I shouldn’t be crying, but in front of Jun Chong, my tears flowed freely. If he really only used up a little Ghost Power, why wasn’t he by my side? Why did he have to hide at home and not even go out during the day?
“Jun Chong, I’ll come back to find you. I’ll let you drink my blood; didn’t you get better last time after drinking it? I’m fine now; if you drink my blood, you’ll be okay.”
“Fool, just knowing you care is enough for me.” After a moment of silence, Jun Chong continued, “Anxin, the sudden influx of Yin energy in your body caused the fever. I’ve already asked Molin to prepare some traditional medicine for you; it’s his Sect’s secret remedy, and it will help a lot.”
“But you—”
“Enough with the chatter! Hurry up and drink the medicine so you can get better. We have important work tonight; otherwise, more people will die.” Molin entered holding a bowl of medicine, snatched my phone away, and shouted, “I’ll take good care of her. Remember that you owe me two favors; this medicine is priceless!”
With a decisive click, he hung up the call and tossed my phone aside before thrusting the bowl in front of me. A foul smell made me cover my nose and back away from him.
“What is this?”
“It’s a unique secret remedy from my Sect, specifically for those who have absorbed magical energy. One bowl guarantees effective results.” Molin stubbornly held the bowl in front of me. “Drink! No wasting it.”
“Magical energy?” I blinked in confusion.
Jun Chong is a ghost, and some only possess an Eerie Aura, which is the presence of negative energy. How could there be magical power in that? Shouldn't those with magical abilities be from the Demon Realm?
At least, that's how it is written in the novel.
"Nonsense. Chu Fan said you were cursed, and when you came into contact with too much magical power at once, you couldn't handle it and ended up with a fever," Molin said, furrowing his brow at the end, muttering to himself, "I didn't expect even people from the Demon Realm to show up. It seems after we resolve this matter, I must return to Sect. This city is quite restless! By the way, drink up quickly; if it cools down, its effectiveness will be halved."
The sudden shout splattered water on my face, and I wiped it off unhappily, retorting angrily, "What are you shouting for? If you keep it up, I'll feed it to the dogs. Even they wouldn't want something that smells this bad."
"You—"
"Hmph!"
Though I acted tough with my words, I pinched my nose and gulped it down. No matter what, I had to prioritize the bigger picture. Tonight, I must catch that Vengeful Spirit and deal with the Cat-Faced Granny so that I could obtain the Soul-Calling Bell.
Yet, I still couldn't understand what Molin meant by magical power and why Jun Chong possessed it. Or was it possible that someone else had saved me last night?
While I was lost in thought, rinsing my mouth out, Molin came over and patted my shoulder before leading me out to the balcony.
Next door, Medical Aunt was tidying up and chatting with another aunt. As I leaned in to listen, my eyes widened in surprise.
