I casually threw on a jacket and headed downstairs. Earlier, I had received a call from Lin You, saying she was waiting for me outside my building, so I rushed down.
I hadn't had a chance to reconcile with Lin You these past few days, and now that she was taking the initiative to find me, I felt a surge of happiness. I didn't care what time it was; I just wanted to see her.
The night air was cool, and the dim yellow streetlights illuminated patches of darkness, failing to dispel the blanket of night that enveloped the earth. The night felt heavy, the darkness thick; a crescent moon hung in the sky, appearing particularly lonely.
I stood at the entrance, looking around for what felt like ages but didn't see Lin You. Just as I was about to pull out my phone to call her, I noticed a figure standing by a distant streetlight. The silhouette looked somewhat like Lin You.
"Xiao You."
I called out and ran toward her. However, just as I approached, the streetlight flickered and went out with a pop.
Suddenly, darkness enveloped my vision, making it impossible to see who was there.
"Is that you, Xiao You?" I slowed my pace as I moved closer, trying to discern something in the dark. At that moment, she spoke up, "It's me. Can you come over here and help me? I twisted my ankle."
"Does it hurt? Wait for me."
I took out my phone and turned on the flashlight. As soon as my feet stepped away from the light's reach, a shiver ran through me, and a sharp pain shot through my left side—a warning sign that danger was near. Instinctively, I slowed down and stared blankly ahead.
"What's wrong? Anxin, I'm in pain! Hurry over and help me; it really hurts!"
The voice was soft and familiar, exactly like Lin You's. But the coy tone was strikingly different. Standing in the darkness, I reached for my left side and gripped the hairpin tightly in my hand.
"You're not Xiao You. Who are you really?"
"How could I not be?" From a distance in the darkness, I couldn't see her expression. "Anxin, are you really so angry that you won't forgive me? I know what happened that day was my fault, but everyone gets angry sometimes. Please don't be mad anymore; just consider it my mistake. My foot hurts a lot right now; can you help me?"
"Even though your voice sounds a lot like Lin You's, you're not her. We've known each other for so long, and after a fight, no matter who initiates the reconciliation, it's never with this tone or attitude."
Every time Lin You and I had an argument, when she took the initiative to apologize, it was always with her queenly demeanor—never this soft and submissive. Besides, no one would come to apologize in the middle of the night.
Moreover, the Hairpin in my hand emitted a yellow glow that was increasing in frequency and intensity. Although it was my first time seeing it, I could sense that it signaled danger.
So I didn't believe this person was Lin You.
"Hehehe, hahaha..."
A low voice echoed through the night with a chilling presence. The Wind Sound intensified at that moment, making the air feel even colder and more eerie.
I felt goosebumps rise all over me, realizing I couldn't handle this kind of entity. Since she wasn't Lin You, there was no reason for me to stay any longer; I turned and ran.
"Gu Anxin, where do you think you're going?"
The ghostly voice whispered in my ear as I felt a slender hand grip my arm tightly. The sharp nails dug into the fabric and pierced my flesh.
I frowned but couldn't shake her off.
She dipped her fingers in the blood flowing from my arm and brought them to her eyes, her nimble tongue lightly licking as if savoring a delicious treat. The darkness of her gaze flickered with a hint of crimson.
"This blood—it's so good! Give it to me, give it to me!"
"Let go of me!"
I raised my left hand and, without thinking, thrust backward. In my panic, I was somewhat clumsy, still worrying about whether I had hit anything when I suddenly heard a piercing scream behind me.
I turned around to see her clutching her wounded left arm, blood pouring out. The red in her pupils flared up as she glared at me fiercely.
"Gu Anxin, how dare you hurt me?"
Her gaze sent chills down my spine. My eyes widened, and instinctively, I took a step back, wanting to escape, but she grabbed my left arm. In that brief moment of hesitation, my eyes caught sight of her right arm.
She was wearing a short-sleeved shirt, exposing her slender arm. A shocking scar marred her fair skin. Because I was so close, I could see clearly that Lin You also had a similar scar on her right arm—one that had been left six months ago and still looked fresh.
I had asked her before why she hadn’t removed it, and she had jokingly replied, "What if one day I go missing or go mad? You can use this to find me."
At that time, it was just a joke. I never expected that at this very moment, it would become reality. Looking at the face identical to Lin You's, I could no longer tell whether she was real or an illusion.
If she were fake, all it would take is for someone to create a similar face; there would be no need to replicate the scar so convincingly—especially on a night like this when no one would care.
But if she were real, why would she want to harm me?
"Are we not good friends?"
"What's wrong? Are you stunned? Don't you recognize me?" Lin You smiled slightly, her sharp fangs glinting as she stared at me like a vampire.
My heart leaped with joy, and my ears buzzed as I gazed at her in a daze.
"Gu Anxin, your blood smells so good. Since we are good friends, why not let me have a taste? Not only can—ah—"
Before she could finish her sentence, she suddenly released me and screamed, stumbling back while clutching her chest, looking as if she was in great pain. Before I could react, a man pulled me behind him.
The man held a talisman and confronted Lin You. "So you're a Zombie! I thought you were someone else! Prepare to die!"
"Don't! She's Lin You!"
I grasped the man's hand tightly. In that brief moment, Lin You vanished into the darkness. The man looked at me with dissatisfaction and snapped, "That's a Zombie!"
"Zombie?" I shook my head. "Impossible! She has a scar on her arm that is identical to Xiao You's, so she can't be a Zombie. Xiao You is human!"
"If she's trying to get close to you and has taken on the appearance of your friend, wouldn't she use that deadly resemblance to deceive you?" The man's voice was heavy, clearly displeased with my letting Lin You go. But seeing the tears in my eyes, his tone softened slightly, though still stiff. "That strong smell of death is definitely not human. If she really is your friend, then your friend has long since died."
I remained silent as I heard Molin calling from behind me. When I turned to look, in that fleeting moment, the man who had saved me had disappeared.
After we returned, the dim yellow streetlight flickered suddenly. A dark figure stood beneath it, their shadow stretching long and thin. The person gazed at the place where we had vanished and smiled faintly. By the time the streetlight flickered again, they were gone without a trace.
As the night stretched into dawn, I hardly managed to sleep. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, I called Lin You, but the line was still busy. Sighing, I got up to brush my teeth and wash my face.
Stepping outside, I saw Molin excitedly on the phone. He beckoned me over with a finger, and once he hung up, he said, "My senior brother found the server; it was sent from No. 28 Guanghua Road. I'm sure the culprit is right there. Grab your gear; we're going to pay him a visit."
"Huh?"
When I was dragged by Molin to No. 28 Guanghua Road, a strong feeling of doubt washed over me. "Could it be a mistake? This place is a graveyard!"
No. 28 Guanghua Road was indeed a cemetery, surrounded by overgrown weeds with no visible buildings—only solitary tombstones standing within. At one end of the iron fence hung a sign that read "No. 28 Guanghua Road," swaying precariously in the wind.
Moreover, there were no power lines or signal towers nearby; how could anyone connect to the internet here?
Taking a step back to think, even if someone were using a wireless network card or something similar to connect here, were they trying to get closer to the spirits? Most people wouldn’t do that, would they?
I noticed Molin's lips twitch as he picked up his phone and called his senior brother, unleashing a torrent of curses without any hint of being a junior. After hanging up, he turned to me and said, "Let’s go!"
"Where to?"
"I'm going to prepare some things. Since we can't find the source, we need to help Ling Feng through this first. You go find him; I'll meet you at his place once I'm ready."
"Okay." I nodded and replied, "But I need to grab some photos; I’m in a hurry to submit them."
Since it was still early and we had plenty of time to prepare, Molin didn’t mind. We each went our separate ways.
As I walked from No. 28 Guanghua Road to the old alley, I discovered a strange place that only took ten minutes to reach.
However, when we took a taxi here, it took a long time. "Is it because we're not familiar with the route? But it shouldn't take this long even if we're not familiar."
Glancing at the haunting alley, I tightened my collar and hurriedly turned to leave. Just as I stepped out of that area, I bumped into Shizui coming towards me.
He was holding a bag of trash, seemingly about to throw it away. Upon seeing me, he smiled slightly and waved, "Anxin."
"Mr. Shizui."
I ran over, but as I entered, I noticed Shizui frowning at me. His gaze was not the gentle one I was used to; instead, it held a hint of surprise that gradually transformed into something deep and complex, leaving me unsure of what it was.
I looked down at myself and then raised my head to ask, "Is there something on me that you're staring at?"
"Nothing." Shizui squinted with a smile, a sharp glint seeping through his dark pupils. "I just suddenly feel like you've become more feminine."
I froze for a moment, inexplicably reminded of that night with Jun Chong, and I couldn't help but lower my head shyly. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Shizui stared at me for a while before suddenly saying, "Since we've met, why don't you take the photos back? You didn't come last time, and Lin You didn't either. I've been unable to reach her by phone. Why don't you bring them back for her too?"
My hands tightened suddenly. "What did you say?"
